We loves it! We loves it! We thought nobody loved us...wait! Master loves us! Nobody loves us...Gimmie the GPS! It's Precious..... (I would post a picture for you guys to play with but I can't find my original, sorry)
  2. Mortaine, nice to meet you - don't mind the grumpy face on the avatar . I would be caching in Saratoga where I work as well but I recently got laid off from my dot.com company that is quickly shutting down. I just looked at the caches that you've been on and we've got some in common. There are few in Henry Cowell that are great - you should check them out. Also, make sure to check out Echo's other caches (Eagle Fire, Echo's Playground) for some really great views!! Hope to run into you sometime.
  3. quote:Originally posted by Cincinnati Bearcaches:was thinking more on the lines of hiking biking, canoeing. But 1000 miles driving in 2 days of cacheing can be tiring as well.. I've gone on many recent caches that were about 4 mile roundtriup hikes (if that's what you are looking for). I'm luckey becuase I'm very close to Big Basin State Park and Henry Cowell Park (home of the giant redwoods) and there are some great hikes/caches here. The most recent was about a 1.5 mile hike in with an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet. Water was my precious....love the precious.....the heat, it burns us!
  4. These are great! Yeah, feel free to grab my avatar (I'm posting here to make it easy for you to get) since I don't have those kinds of Photoshop skills.
  5. Ok, here's what we've done: We used Shrinky Dinks to make a Geocaching keychain and my wife made a really cool Geo-card that was left in Hope Vally, CA. We'll be leaving these at marks (50, 100 and for our FTF on our new pending multi). At the rest of the caches we hit our new signature item is a Geo-pack consisting of a magnet, tattoo, and compass all with our name (Kealia) and SV Geocachers on them. (Will post a better picture when I can get one). P.S. The tattoo and the magnet (shown) look the same. We have changed the logo back to the original square to comply with GC.com logo standards, too!
  6. Just backing up the last two psots. I removed Mobi right after discovering Spinner and Plucker. Try them out, you'll love them.
  7. Our plans to go to Tahiti earlier this summer got scrapped because the locals went on strike. At least someone got to go....
  8. Yes, I downloaded the hint decoder and was able to install it to a Palm III with no problems. Since then, I've switched to using GPX Spinner and Plucker and haven't needed it. Take a look at those programs and you'll probably agree. If not, try downloading again and installing again (looking for hte .prc file of course). I know this sounds like simple advice, but I had to do this 3 times to get Plucker to work right.
  9. Don't worry, it only shows up for you when you are logged in. Nobody else can see it.
  10. What comes to mind is the cacher's signature (can't remember who it is) that says something like: "Don't mess with Geocachers - we know the best places to hide a body!" Radical Geeer's idea/post was good, too. Seriously though, I would say (and voted) "no". This is an activity that you enjoy and you should be able to go and do it in an enjoyable manner. If your wife/kids want to go along and ENJOY it then by all means bring them, too. But there is no reason that you have to endure any BS while enjoying your hobby. If she really wants to Geocache, suggest that she buy her own GPS so that she can do the caches that she would enjoy. You could even help her by downloading the waypoints for her.
  11. Thanks for checking that out. Yeah, I know how to find the locations of the ones posted on GC.com but haven't really dug into it yet - been having too much fun caching. I'll be taking this up more when I've exhausted the caches in my area - or maybe in conjunction with. Thanks!
  12. Happy Bubbles - Don't worry I was born in Spokane and I'll get your back! I still LOVE that place.... Mark42 - How did you do that from the original picture?
  13. Ok, so I'm really new to BM hunting and came across one today while out caching. The BM was at: 37 16.301 121 56.950 and was marked as 223A. Those coords don;t show up when I search the area.....it's failry new (stamped 2001) by the San Jose Water District I think (didn;t have camera with me). Is it in another database? What should I do with this info? Thanks.
  14. Ok, I have bi-weekly PQ set up that I use GPXSpinner and Plucker to get the waypoints into my PDA and GPSr, but.... I'm going caching tomorrow in a place that's out of my normal PQ area. I manually downloaded the waypoints and used EasyGPS to send them to my GPSr but how do I get the cache pages into my PDA since I don't have the .gpx files to 'spin'? I suppose I can always use paper since this is a rare occurance......but is there a way to get them in the PDA? Thanks! (...Loves the Precious!)
  15. Big Brown Cacher, here's the answer. The coords in the description are listed in DD MM.MMM (degress, minutes, decimal minutes), but when you download the waypoint using the icon on the description page you get them in Decimal Degress. Example: DD MM.MMM 37 03.047 122 00.408 Decimal Degrees (for same coords) 37.05078 122.0068 If you can set your GPSr to Decimal Degrees you can use those, otherwise you'll need to convert them to DD MM.MMM after you downlaod them. While I haven't tried it myself, try using EasyGPS (I use it for other things) to convert them. Most people on here use Pocket Queries (you'll need to pay to become a Premium Member but it's well worth it) to automatically get mass downloads and then use EasyGPS to load them into the GPSr. No conversions are needed and you get all the waypoints that you want in one nice file. Hope that helps.
  16. Let me be the first to make a suggestion that I'm sure will be backed by many. PLEASE don't make the audio auto-start. Many people (like myself) have music playing on the computer while surfing and auto-starting audio hijacks the speakers. Likwise, many people don't even realize that they have their speakers on and then get a blaring audio stream out of the blue. It's much more polite/considerate to have a link on the page for the audio stream. I for one would gladly click on the link to start the audio as I agree that an audio description would be very cool. The emphasis and tone of the description could add a lot to the cache description (especially if it's a spooky or Halloween one like this)! Of course opinions on this may vary but I've always seen the majority of people against auto-loading audio (I work in the Internet industry - ok, I'm laid off right now but that's a whole other thread!)
  17. Welcome, Teh best advice I've seen on here is the following: When you are ready to try caching, mark your house as a waypoint. Then walk/drive about 1/2 mile away and navigate back to your house using your GPSr. That will get you used to teh icons, settings, interface, etc. and let you know what to expect when doing that first cache. Best of luck to you.
  18. quote:I work for WorldCom ... got a bunch of options awarded at $45.00 per share. Wanna trade Sorry to hear that! Mine were all awarded at $0.025 cents and if I cashed (no pun intended) them all in and sent them to someone I'd be losing money on the postage.....maybe I'll start a themed cache in the Bay Area here that requires you to trade defunct dot-com or multi-million dollar company stuff. Not sure how the trade up will be calculated, though

(see also- "Unemployed", Computer administrator, aircraft technician- defense worker- dot-com executive- systems administrator, et.al) That is so funny! Esp since I'm unemployed after 23 years in IT. Heck, I can (or used to be able to) write machine code. Not like I'm a dinosaur either. I'm up with some of the latest technologies. Too bad I don't live in India or Russia I hear ya. I'm currently "looking" as well after my dot-com bubble finally burst. I may as well toss the paperwork for all my stock options into a cache. Then again I can see the log now - "Lots of trash in cache, cleaned it out!"
  20. quote:Originally posted by Snoogans:Currently: A crappy old 1996 Megellan 2000. Hey, that's what I used for my first 12 finds. Darn thing wouldn;t get any more accurate than a .10 mile! Really helped me to cut my teeth on that unit. Now I've got a SporTrak Pro and the difference is phenomenal! I'm just worried that I'll rely too much on the unit now. Now if we could just find a way to load our avatars onto the GPSr.....
  21. quote:Originally posted by Stunod:Just saw something that might help: From the Plucker desktop, click OPTIONS, PREFERENCES. You can select the language from there. There is a selection to autodetect the language...sounds like this failed for you. Hopefully this will take care of your problems. Yep. Was just about to post that I found that option - thanks anyway.
  22. Hey, something closer to home. I'm in Scotts Valley and have spent my first 2 months in this area and have a TON of caches left to find. It's a very cache-rich area! Hope to see some of you out there!
  23. After I got Plucker installed on my desktop I got the following error message = locale " cannot be found Any ideas how to fix this? It seems that everything installed ok but when I view the program on my Palm it seems the menu is in Arabic or something bizarre! The files themselves are OK but I can't navigate very well since I can't read the menu choices...... 24. Take the avatar off us! It burns us! Take it off! Wow, take a few hours off the forum to actually go find a cache today and look what happens - I get a whole thread about little ole me!! My first avatar was more like me - it was a my USA Hockey goalie mask but I got no reactions from that so......I changed to Gollum who I loved in both the books and movie. Went around for days giving my wife the creeps quoting the movie ! For the D&D thread - sorry never played the game but had a few friends that did. Have nothing to add to that discussion, sorry. For those who are disturbed by the avatar - maybe I'll change it to Smeagol BTW - That's not really Gollum. It's a picture of BrianSnat hahahaha......
