  1. quote:Does anyone know if there is a California Geocoin? I brought a Texas Geocoin back from Texas, and it was neat to track it. -jabberwocky There isn't yet but there is a thread in this forum discussing it. I believe that they are looking for designs right now. Pop on over there and maybe you can help design it!
  2. The weasel chokes on sourdough. He for whom this is intended will understnad. All others must immediately delete this message from their memory under penalty of death.
  3. Love it. Will be buying one soon to cover up this hair of mine. dadgum comb over....we hates it!
  4. My answer to questions like this is simple: If YOU think it's a good idea, do it. I personally think it's a great idea and adds another element of fun to the game. Keep in mind that whatever 'result' you get on these forums may/may not represent the entire caching population. I say give it a shot and good luck to you!
  5. Agree with most everything that has been said. Challenging caches are great fun becuase in this area the hides seem to be in the same places (half hollow Redwoods). So anything but that is now a challenge since we've been conditioned to look there Mean is hiding one in the middle of nowhere and jumping out from behind a bush yelling "surprise!" and scaring the hell outta someone Now that I write that, it reminds me of a post Snoogans had on here a while ago about a cache in an old unused train tunnel that had a motion sensor that would trip a BRIGHT light and the sound of an approaching train (CD?). At first it may seem mean but I would laugh my @$$ off afterwards!
  6. I said a mystery/surprise cache as well, but like the idea of this one having it's own symbol. I know things like this usually open up a can of worms ("I want mine to have a special symbol, too!"), but this should be the excpetion. Now what it should be....????
  7. I do email the finders of my caches if they have something interesting to say in the post or to say congrats on my multi since it takes about 2-3 hours to complete. I like to find out more about what they thought, etc. If it's just one of the smaller & easier caches I've placed and the log is TNLNSL then no, I don't.
  8. Man, I'm tired or that was funny. To keep on thread, I've come across a 'girl item' themed cache and a Star Wars themed cache, but that's it so far -
  9. Be creative. My wife and I have created Geo-packs that we use for our signature items. These are ziplock bags that contain 1 Magnet (printed on HP magnetic 'paper'), 1 tattoo (also HP paper) and a toy compass all with the Geocaching logo, our name, and "SV Geocachers" on them. THey seem to be picked up pretty quick as I'm sure the kids LOVE the tattoos like mine does. Likewise, my wife scrapbooks and she has made Geo-CardsGeo-Cards, Covered log books, etc. and they have been swiped by the next finder each time. We've also done iron on t-shirts for FTF and a few Kealia Geo-Shrinky Dink keychains. I'd say to use your imagination and your creativity and test a few things. See what gets grabbed first (or see what fits you best) and go with those. I can tell you that I LOVE to find signature items no matter what they are. (Who is this Ronald McDonald cacher anyway...his stuff is everywhere! )
  10. Sounds like a poll could be in order. I treat TBs as non-trades, too. I will trade items and then pick up or drop off a TB but don't really count for/against it while trading as it's sole purpose is to move and not to be kept. That being said, I picked up an Oregon GeoCoin the other day that I need to replace with something nice since the owner agreed to let me keep it. Thansk for the reminder!!
  11. I'm going to set up an Elvis themed cache. I was raised on the King and think it would be neat. I don't expect anybody to drop off anything valuable, but little Elvis items would be fun. I have a great FTF item, too.
  12. Aaahhh - just got a post from another cacher who found it today with no troubles and loved it. Can now put the bottle down and go to bed. I suppose it all works out in the end. This is my first multi-cache (owned) and it took me weeks of research to find the spots I wanted as they (some) are not widely-known about - even to those who live a couple hundred yards from them. Guess this is my baby and I took it really personally. It's just a game....relax...breathe....
  13. C'mon guys - a civil discussion please. While I'm not a big gun fan, we've been out on caches that take about 2 hours each way. When I'm with my wife and kid out where cell phones don't work, the thought of carrying a gun has crossed my mind. I'm not wild about the idea so I think we're going to stay away from some of those cachers for now but I fully support the discussions of a gun in this forum. It's a matter of safety and is appropriate. Everybody is welcome to their opinions, just let em talk, alright?
  14. So I get home today and find a note on my multi-cache that a local cacher wrote. Due to the nature of this multi (multiple drive ups to Historical Markers to do an easy math problem to solve for the final location), it requires a bit of driving along lesser known but well-used roads in our mountains that can be tricky. So after the last cacher said that she hit Step 1 but was going to hav a hard time finding Step 2, etc. without a map, I decided to post some driving directions to get people from out of the area comfortable about where they are driving. So.....this cacher (who has Lost in his name no less) posts a note that he STRONGLY disagrees with me about going up a certain road (which is the ONLY road you can go up to hit 2 of the steps)! His complaint was that one fork is Private Property and the other took him by children playing and he was accosted by a local saying this was his driveway and that he was going to physically harm the guy. Now that's fine that he has an issue with that situation, but the road I told people to go on doesn't fork!! He also complained that Step 1-4 are on Private Property - how many Historical Markers do you know about that are on Private Property?? Thorugh previosu exchanges (which were always nice) he's told me that his OLD (very OLD) GPS is consistently off by 100 feet or more, so yeah I could see where he could end up in somebody's driveway, but he should also know I (nor would any good cacher) place a cache on Private Property. Does he think I work for Magellan?!?!?! Anyway, I don't understand why we wrote what he did and I couldn't reach him by email tonight (and I'm going to be off email tomorrow) so I posted a follow up note, then waited a couple of hours and deleted his log. I also put my own note on there about what had happened and that I was working with the cacher to find out what went wrong (but it got deleted after it was posted and emailed to those watching the cache due to PC problems on my end). Anyway, not looking for advice but needed to 'tell' someone who would understand. Thanks for 'listening'. I love you. My precious....always the precious.
  15. The first thing that you do is beat them silly! 4 miles!?!?!? I've heard of cachers moving them 10 feet or so because they thought they found a 'better' spot that really irked the owner (I would be, too) but 4 miles!?!?!?!? I would email the person who moved it and ask them why. Then, hunt them down and place pieces of them in new multiple caches as a warning to others. Sorry, can't help it. If it's a good spot, I'd say leave it and post it as a new cache leaving the replacement in the original's spot. Sounds like a nightmare to me. Sorry you had this trouble.
  16. Sorry I won't be in the area anytime soon to come see this. I was lucky enough however to to find an Oregon Geocoin left by an Oregon cacher out here a few days ago. On the back of it is the Oregon state with a GC1 flag posted near the area where the original cache was. Makes me feel like I'm in touch with my roots.....
  17. Congrats! I was planning on a cache-frenzy weekend but some other things came up that prevented me doing just about any... Maybe I'll have time to grab a few tomorrow if I'm lucky. Hope #200 was memorable.
  18. And me on the other side of the country......
  19. Thanks for the heads-up. BTW - Oregon Geocoins have recently been placed and found in the Santa Cruz area! I just went and got one last night and they are really neat. It's the first Geocoin that I've seen and I'm very impressed with them. The placer let me know that he's going to be coming to the San Jose area once a month or so until he moves out here soon and will be placing more shortly. Keep your eyes open for these very cool items!
  20. If you guys are really interested in this you may want t ocontact Nurse Dave via his profile. I just found one of the Oregon Geocoins last night and it is awesome!! He told me that he helped organize it's creation and that he's going to be moving to CA in the next few months. He may be a GREAT resource to make this happen. The coin is by far the coolest thing I've found so far....
  21. quote:That rocks! That is the kind of cache hide I like to see. If you can get your hands on an old hard-drive (check with your local computer repair shop), dig the magnet out of it. They have really strong holding power. It may surprise you how strong they are. http://fp1.centurytel.net/Criminal_Page/ Great idea! Thanks! I have 5 old computers and hard drives laying around colelcting dust so I think I'll go grab one. I went by the cache last night to make sure it's still there and it appears to have gotten through 72 hours of muggles so I think it's going to be OK. Forgot my camera though...I will get a pic up soon-
  22. I'm in Scotts Valley but have always worked in the valley. If the offer still stands, I'd love to be in. Just email me via my profile when you're ready to talk about it.
  23. My wife since about 1995 using a Magellan 2000 that we used for our first 15 or so finds. She was part of a Dog Team for the Sheriff's Department doing search and rescue here in the Bay Area. Unemployed and nothing better to do with my time... Serioudly, it's the fun family outings.
  24. If you want to use Plucker and Spinner, here's the quick rundown. Drag the GPX file into the Spinner icon that's on your desktop. This will 'spin' the files into the format needed for your PDA (HTML files). When that's done Spinner will have created a folder for you called "cache" where you originally drug the file from. Now go to Plucker and set upa channel (much liek AvantGo! if you've used that) that uses the INDEX file from the CACHE folder as it's starting point. The rest of teh walkthrough can be found at either the Plucker or Spinner homepages...I'd tell you more but I can't recall all of it. If you can't get it to work, email me and I'll try to give you better instructions. I've never used cachemate, but Plucker pages look like regular cache pages and do also give you the last 5 logs.
