  1. In 17 years, has this ever happened? Anyway, how would someone who didn't place the cache remove the red wrench? The cache owner gives the company worker their info? Nope. I'm not saying your reply was dumb (please believe that) I just think that the whole idea of this paying someone to fix your cache is dumb.... To the point that I believe the OP was joking.
  2. Im +1'ing you instead of "hearting" your comment and I'm not reading the whole thread from start. Did anyone other than me get this weird feeling that this is a sad little social experiment?
  3. cerberus1, I think it just means someone liked what someone else had to say. Same as the +1 thing yall do here when responding to or just quoting a post. I just "liked" (or rather..."hearted") igator210's post because I agree.....it's going to take time to get used to this new look.
  4. 54 A very apt metaphore. If you don't swim upstream where the female's lay their eggs, your genetic material will not be inherited by the next generation, effectively making the behavior of "community maintenance" an extinct concept. This may be the best solution for all. Carry on. Touchstone-- wow! You hit the nail on the head. Thank you. Love it.
  5. If I'm out of town and have no idea of the area, I can look up caches on the map and find interesting places. Being from Texas, I have a few books that highlight these spots-- and there's usually a cache there anyway. If in a different state, geocaching is another source other than web searches for the same reason. Also, exercise is less boring. Oh, I've been to a few events that were fun too.
  6. Wow. Current political situation? Sorry, but I'm a Trump supporter and he is our elected president, not a situation. Hmm, just sounds like a pot- shot to me. It doesn't even make any sense (again, to me). Most of the time I call people who don't cache--- people. Or folks, a crowd, etc.
  7. That pesky first GPS Stash cache placed should have never been allowed!! Funny how the cache that started it all would have people complaining it is against the rules. Good thing you all weren't involved back then. Thanks for posting that video link, Team DEMP. It'd be interesting to me to meet the guy who started it all back then. Sprinkler heads are hard for me to imagine as a violation if there isn't a line of them surrounding landscaping. And, especially if coords are spot on and you do as you said you were thinking-- label it somehow so it's distinguishable. I'm sure my input doesn't matter so take it with a grain of salt. You do realize that was three "ifs" to attempt to make a poor cache choice dunce-proof, and sorta okay. Yeah, not a long list but I understand what you're saying. The thing is, atleast with the ones I've found, the hide-a-key sprinkler heads look very different from a real one. Also, I can't remember any of them having wet logs so they don't seem all that bad to me. But, the comparison is a cardboard box propped up against a tree at it's base.

  9. Thanks, NanCycle, I hadn't thought about doing it that way with bookmarks.
  10. The only thing I know to do is add each DNF to your watchlist. If you do that, you can stop watching after finding the cache. It isn't ideal, unless we were able to create separate watchlists (like say, one for the ones we really like to hear about others finding, one for DNFs and so on...) but that's what I do anyhow.
  11. Is that really the best you can do for your "final comment"? Gone out...not with a bang but a whimper. Okay, I understand now. Unique caches can't be around anymore because there are too many thoughtless people out there and they're too much work for Groundpeak..the class can only go as fast as the slowest learner type thing. Wonderful.
  12. Just took a look at two. Both are locked. This isn't looking like one bit of a good idea to me and I can't figure why so many people would complain about these type caches which forced their archival. What's the problem??
  13. My motivation for attending an event (CITO or regular) is to hang out with folks who participate in the same hobby I do. Not a social butterfly, but it's a commonality we obviously have so it works. I'm not going to inconvenience a host/hostess by having him/her TRY to make sure I have a seat at an event only to walk by and say hello, for a souvenir. CITOs are different. Oh, and I've only been to one event where a "logbook" was to be signed. I thought it was pretty neat what the host had created.
  14. Around here there are a lot of regularly scheduled events (socials). I wonder how many folks show up, introduce themselves, walk away and post an attended log or sit around for 10 minutes, then leave -just for a souvenir.
  15. Is it a diamond on a steeek? Puzzles aren't good for me.
  16. I think I know what you're asking but not sure. Did you click every attribute in the same order for every cache page?
  17. Just to clarify, I do have goals within this hobby. Those are for me only and not to compete with anyone. And yes, I do like caches in a series, even ones placed just 528ft apart. Exercise is so much less boring this way. But "numbers cachers"?...I don't have it in me to go find 500 caches in a 24 hour period (which is my definition). If someone else does, good for them for trying. Anyhow, my first response was simple. Sometimes these forums really are the worst part of the hobby for me and it gets frustrating when trying to learn something to have to skim through and weed out the griping. I took the original poster's post as a "oh dear, another person that thinks all us new folks are ruining the game" type post. It was just nice to see a newer person, like me, share pretty much the same perspective I have. Maybe that'll change later in life, I'll adjust.
  18. Thank you, Keystone. I was just thinking what a huge hassle this new "rule" could become to not only the cache owners, but reviewers also. Some of us who place caches DO pay attention to feedback from those cachers who care to give it. New cache owners need help sometimes-- glad I got a heads up when I placed my first difficult cache from the ones who found it first! And then there's that whole terrain thing. It varies from season to season sometimes and of course there are regional differences of opinion. GS, please let us work some things out amongst ourselves- we're not ALL dumb
  19. I get the Elvira cache name. Just awful! 😁 It was so popular I can't see how noone else made the connection. There's several tall tales in cache descriptions around here and also seem to be very well liked. I'd do this myself if I were creative enough. Go ahead!
  20. Just saw your post CascadeHandmade, and that you covered the coordinate/GPS thing already.
  21. I've found 3 of these rocks myself, all while caching. The last one was on my way to a Benchmark at a courthouse in an old town square. It was sitting on top of an electrical box and because of it's bright red, white and blue paint, I noticed it easily. After a quick internet search and coming upon a website dedicated to this hobby in my county I found out a few things. #1. This area has a LOT of activity with this hobby. Some folks post on the webpage where they found a painted rock w/ a picture of it and a few others will post a pic of their new creations with a sentence like "This batch is finished and will be placed around so-and-so city tomorrow". Which leads to #2. There aren't any coordinates published, just certain areas in the county are mentioned so people are aware to be on the lookout when, for examples, at a grocery store or post office, or other public places. Seems like a good thing for artistic people who want to share their capabilities with others. Or, from pictures I've seen, folks who aren't maybe as talented but love to create for various reasons. Could be a good stress reliever or meditation type thing for some. Who knows? I just think it's neat. Problem is, the website they use for my county is a Facebook page and I don't use that site so I probably won't ever "log" (for lack of better word) anything, but do like finding them.
  22. +1 It seems to be a completely different hobby (to me), when "find count" is the goal, rather than location. +2 Not sure what this might be called but one thing is for sure, it ain't geocaching! Hey, SETX member- just realized I found one of your caches as a "bonus" when a friend and I were biking a series back in April. She got there earlier than me and parked at one end. I picked her up in the middle, loaded her bike, parked at the other end, unloaded and headed off to grab all the letterboxes. They were all pretty much the same container so that pattern made the finding quicker. We signed every one and replaced as found. Heading back to her car on our bikes, we found a multi she had figured already plus a couple of traditionals. All in all, I think there were about 45 or so that she got. I got half that much. We were biking. In no way was this comparable to the ET highway but could be considered a PT? It was fun and good exercise! Much more preferred over driving and jumping out every 528ft. That just seems like work to me- not fun. Anyway, about this being inconsiderate as heck: I tend to think the PT owners don't check paper logs and "depend" on others to replace "missing" containers. Funny, I could log the ET highway with a cut and paste on every one. Or for that matter, any other PT I find on the map. Not going to though.
