  1. Gotta Agree about the Tracking Time. None of the coins are rare but the Tracking Time is the best looking of the bunch, and it's trackable with an icon.

  3. As I recall from the few required law classes I took in my college days, the laws that would apply are those for abandonment/lost property. Ownership is not relinquished in either case. Knowingly taking an activated coin, with the intention of doing anything but moving it to another cache, is theft. While it might be pretty far fetched to think it would ever be prosecuted, you'd think it would at least be enough to keep activated coins off of Ebay. In the case of the moun10bike coin, it seems to me the owner has stated in the past they are for the finder to do with at as they wish. Though he may now wish to amend that as it relates to Ebay, I don't think it makes it stealing.
  4. I'm skeptical about this. First of all, I don't think coins are lost any more often than travel bugs. And most coins that go MIA have fallen victim to the same forces that afflict travel bugs. Someone picks it up and looses it, forgets they have it or just quits caching OR the cache is muggled or otherwise destroyed. Drilling a hole in a coin, in and of itself, won't do anything to solve that problem (though if the hole is used to attach a tag, it might make it more likely the person picking it up will realize it's nature and move it on with due speed). Secondly, if someone is going to steal a coin why would a little hole stop him? If I found a mou10bike v1 or v2 in a cache, it would go into my collection, hole or not, why would a thief stealing a coin for their own collection be any different? There have also been cases of thieves selling activated coins on Ebay. If they don't mind ripping someone off by selling activated coins, why would they draw the line at selling activated coins with holes in them? I've got about eighty coins in the wild and, so far and the only ones with hole are the ones that were made with them. I've only lost a handful of them (knock on wood). Two of those I've lost have been because the caches were destroyed. I'm hopeful the others will turn up some day, but if not, I'll probably recycle the numbers on the next coin I make.
  5. I've released dozens of coins over the last 6 months and have had only a couple stollen. I have links to all the coins I've release on my coin page listed below.
  6. Gotta agree with this. I believe the best strategy here would be "don't buy it!" I really wasn't planning to. Doesn't make it any less of a rip off.
  7. So it's just crooked all the way round.
  8. Does this guy expect that someone who didn't actually notice the Shipping amount would actually follow through on the purchase? I know I wouldn't have. Seventeen Bucks for Shipping one coin on ebay.

  11. Cool Idea! I think I'll steal it. The idea that is, not the coin.
  12. I"ve been pondering this myself. Unfortunatley (or fortunatly, depending on your perspective), my collection takes up 4 large binders and would take a large suitcase to fit them. Not only that, event after the recent decline, it's probably about 8 to 10 thousand dollars worth of coins. I just don't see any practical way to bring them without it interfering with my enjoyment of the socializing and caching due to having to lug them around and worry about losing them. I think I'm just going to bring my traders, and my activated coins (so that people can log them if they are so inclined).
  13. As a former stock broker, I'm fascinated by this aspect of Geocoins. It is probably the think that has drawn me to collecting more than any other. You could probably substitute "Equities" or "bonds" for "coins" in some of the posts above and found similar things said on the pages of the financial press about the financial markets at any given time. This is not surprising, since all the movements that have occured in the coin market have occured at one time or another in the real market. Is the party over? Unlikely. Supply has outpaced demand (which by the way is still VERY strong), causing a glut, but that will most likely be resolved by the disapearance of the free lunch deals. Saying it's a sign of the end is like saying "No one goes there anymore because it's too crowded". In the long run, this will likely result in a few number of new cons, but of higher quality. Just has happens in the IPO market after a decline. Personaly, I'm buying fewer coins than a couple months ago, but still way more than a year ago (which was zero). When I could afford to buy them all, because the number of new coins was lower, I'd buy at least three of everything. One to keep, one to release (if trackable) and one to trade. I quit buying the one to trade, unless I thought it would be a particulary hard to get issue. Lately, I've quit buying the one one to keep unless there is something about the coin that makes me want to have it in my collection. I'm still hoping to buy or trade for every trackable coin so I can release at least one of each. My favorite coins are still those that are not sold, but only available for trade.
  14. Rules? this is caching. There aren't any rules. There's nothing wrong with grabing a coin out of a cache that you own or have already found. If that's the way you enjoy the game (as I do sometimes), have at it. On the subject of Coin and Bug Hotels, I would say that reasonableness and tthe Golden Rule applies. If you're collecting bugs to take on a trip, that's one thing. If you don't have any bugs to leave, and there's serveral there, who could argue with moving one or two? However, cleaning out a coin/bug cache and leaving nothing when you've got some to leave, just ain't right.

  16. One need only look at the relative value of trackable vs non-trackable on Ebay to see that the market values trackable over nontrackalbe. However, there is clearly a glut of the "freebee" coins right know. There was no way the market would support a free lunch for too long.
  17. I've not seen that one, but I've got a number of similar ones made of clay.
  18. I like Geocoins That... are hard to get (i.e. not sold publicly, trade only, only placed in caches, low mintings, etc.) are round, you know, like a coin are trackable (preferably with an icon) are round are personal coins or made by actual state, area or city organizations (rather than someone who doesn't even live there) are round use color judiciously or not at all are round do not have that epoxy gunk on them and that are round
  19. I'll be there with what coins I have left to trade.
  20. While I'd certainly never contest anyone's right to skin a few bucks off there fellow cachers (a fool and his money...), I can't say there is anything about this coin that would motivate me to spend that kind of money. What's special about it other than that it's meant to subsidize the gas expenditures of some high number cachers? BTW, you folks probably would have easily sold 75 sets for ten bucks a coin (and made roughly the same amount of money) wthout rousing this level of animosity among the high Post/Find ratio crowd. As they say in the Market - Bears make money, Bulls make money, Pigs get eaten. I think I'll pass.
  21. Five months later, they're here. Wyoming comes to Florida.
