  1. My wife and I like to leave nice things in a cache, we might leave a compass, or carabinier or a sewing kit, hot wheels car, but we always leave our card and our trade mark item a GeoScouting wooden nickel <http://kaiserklan.com/GeoScouting/flagpatchnickel.jpg>. Usually we take nothing but that depends on what we find, I would rather leave the mcToys for the kids but will take items of use like anything that could be converted into a travel bug, see <http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=65370> for an example. The hunt is still the most important thing to us and we get a little discouraged when all we're after is a micro too small for any fodder. But they have their place too and can be lots of fun for example in a downtown setting where a normal size cache would be impossible.
  2. I just noticed that when I update my GPS (Garmin GPSMap 76s) with GSAK that it does not have the "found" geocache icon, only the geocache icon. Has it always been this way and I didn't notice or what? How do I upload the GSAK file to the GPS and retain or mark at lest the cache as found?

  4. I agree. I love my Geko !!! It is so small and easy to use. I started with a 101 when my husband first got me into geocaching. Then I had to upgrade to the 201 so I didn't have to manually enter waypoints. It is hard to watch the scenery and do that at the same time. True story - when we were geocaching in London where there is a lot of cloud cover, my little Geko consistently held the satellites, whereas his big GPS 76 lost coverage constantly. It has happened many times here too when we are out in the woods. Just call me the Geko Gal of the KaiserKlan. I plan to eventually upgrade to the 301.
  5. As one of the Custom URL's I have Terraserver as follow; Terraserver Viewer=http://www.yvanovich.com/geocaching/index.php?lat1=%lat&lon1=%lon&mkr1=26&width=900&height=600 But this does not display the coordinates of the hi-lighted cache from GSAK, what am I doing wrong?
  6. I was thinking about this very thing. We took a trip of just over 1200 miles, I had reset my trip indicator on the GPSMap 76s to zero and my car. When we got back the car showed 7 more miles than the GPS, the only thing I could figure was the hills in-between. Possible?
  7. Here is a fun question that some really sharp geek out there should be able to answer for me, someone who really knows this stuff. I've read all the reports about the accuracy of a GPSr when it comes to what time it is, and of course any number of reports about the accuracy of its coordinates. But how accurate is the speed, the MPH when you're traveling down the hi-way, is it more accurate than the radar a police officer may have? My car may say I'm going 60 and the GPSr says I'm going 56.3 can I safely speed up 4 MPH?
  8. With the new version 4.1 available today I see it has lots of new cool stuff. What files do I need to take home to have the same database and filters and such working in both places?
  9. I can't send the data base Clyde because it's too big for my server, can I FTP it to you or something?
  10. I have a theory; Based on an above post, I downloaded a .gpx file for each of the locationless caches I have logged, but I have logged some locationless caches more than once. So the value in my yellow box is now 170 (after 3 downloads) but when I double click it I only get 166 listed, the 4 missing would be the multi-logged locationless, what do you think?
  11. All the previous talk about counts matching got me to looking at my found count, which on GSAK says 164 but on gc.com it says a whole lot more. Could you tell me which categories GSAK counts for its totals? Also, in the yellow box on GSAK it says I have 164 but if I double click it, only 163 are shown, what causes the one loss?
  12. Clyde, I'm not sure how others do this but when I want to take a driving trip, lets say as follows; 1) North on I-29 out of Kansas City 2) West on I-80 from Omaha 3) North on I-25 through Wyoming 4) East on I-90 back to I-29 5) South on I-29 back to Kansas City First I map a series of waypoints in something like MapSource that will box in the hi-ways in question, then using the polygon tool I create a filter to select just the caches along those corridors. Easy so far, the next step is to export from GSAK in MapSource format so I can visualize and print the maps, and to adjust the boundary waypoints if needed. Here in lies the issue, the points chosen to create the polygon are not represented in the exported data, unless I build the waypoints into GSAK which I don't really want to do. How much work would it take to add an option to the export function that includes the waypoints used to create the filter? This is one of those all-in-one things I would like to do, so if its a big deal, I'll cut and paste the waypoints between two different MapSource apps running, which is what I do now.
  13. Clyde, We all throw questions, problems and concerns at you right and left without any thought about the time and effort it takes to answer, research and sometimes fix a problem. I want you to know that we all appreciate the time you take to help us work with your creation, it's obviously a labor of love for you but even so we can be demanding sometimes. I hope the sometimes rude and inconsiderate remarks we send are washed away by the knowledge that GSAK is a wonderful program and even if you were to make no more improvements, it is the best of its kind. Thanks Clyde.
  14. Recalibration after I change the batteries seems to be the answer. I'm not real sure why this should be needed but it does make the difference, maybe I'll feel a little more comfortable using the compass feature now. Thanks.
  15. More memory is a big one but more important at least to me is an ability to store more than 1000 waypoints. I'd like to see larger color displays too, that to me is more important than talking GPSr's or turn by turn hand helds. I'd also like to see a BlueTooth enabled GPS to talk with my Mac and better Mac software to go with it. Garmin also needs to address the cost of there map products, they seem a bit high to me, and then they need to address the errors in them. My opinions ......
  16. Since you've done all the work, why not share the mini-waypoint icons too. Please?
  17. I did calibrate the compass the first time I set up the GPS but never after that, so I'll try it each time I change the batteries too and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the tip. I'm glad to see others are at least trying to use the feature, I've never had much luck with an electronic compass and usually carry a small real one with me for quick direction finding.
  18. I have the Garmin GPSMap 76s with the electronic compass built in, I've got it set to take over when I stop moving for 15 seconds or more. But It doesn't really seem to work all that well, I can't help but think I'm using it wrong. I get the "hold level" warning, but getting it level is another thing, no matter how I hold it it seems to still give me that warning. I'm curious about how others are using this feature, do you have it turned on and if so do you use it frequently, seldom, not at all? Will the arrow still point to the waypoint I'm after if I stand still long enough?
  19. OOPS! Spotted another anomaly! It appears that if I use '%name' in the 'Smart Name' box of the edit current waypoint window to override the '%smart' it only works if '%smart' is used. I use '%drop2 %ter1 %con1' for my waypoint names. Or??
  20. I use EasyGPS to do this, I was just looking for a nifty way to do it in GSAK. Being a programmer myself the idea behind GSAK (do it all in one) really peeks my creative nature. Hence the question in the first place.
  21. Yes, I can do it in two trips, was just hoping since I need them on every load that I could do it in one by identifying them as BASE or special in some manner. I'll continue to use the two step method for now. Thanks Clyde.
  22. The problem of using the User Data and then putting it in as part of a filter is that it is an inclusive search, so BASE in User Data (for example) means that all the conditions of the search must be met plus BASE must appear in it. In my test this changed the output from 417 hits to 3 the three I put BASE into for testing. Or did I do something wrong?
  23. Like many I suppose, I keep about 60 waypoints that I call my "base", these waypoints get loaded into the GPS regardless of where I'm going or what I'm doing. I'd like this to be more automated than it currently is, right now if I do a filter on nearly anything they are left out. Is there a way or how would you recommend I handle these? I guess if there was a way to mark the record of each one of these it would help, how should I do that? I don't want to use the User Flag because I use that in building complex filters, I can't use the State because I set that, ditto with most of the fields that make sense. It would also be nice if they did not have their waypoint name changed by using the special tags, because most have names I gave them... like HOME or MOM's... etc. Thoughs?
