  1. I had a question about things that travel from cache to cache. we are all familiar with travelbugs, which go on both cache and individual inventory lists, but what I wanted to know is whether the ones that come from other sites, that could be considered competitors of Groundspeak, are allowed to be mentioned in the log notes or if they are deleted. some friends of mine are wanting me to send a keychain fob with some of their artwork in it out as a traveller, but I really do not wish to spend my own money to turn their item into a travelbug, so I was thinking about attaching a travellertag number to it, due to their "cost". eventually, I would like to buy some travelbug tags, but I have already gone over budget for the moment with paying my membership dues, and buying nanocaches, so I definately can not justify spending the money on them for someone else, who is unwilling to buy them for themselves, either. on another note, does anybody know what happened to the travelbug decals that used to be on sale in the Groundspeak store? I thought maybe they were just temporarily out of stock, but they've been gone for a while. I had heard that some people put them on their car (which is neat, because then we can recognise each other!) and that some had attached actual TB numbers as well, so that their car could be "discovered" by other cachers. anybody know anything about any of this? lastly, and this one might need to be ported elsewhere, and I hope it doesn't start some kind of geocaching flamewar, for geocoins, is it generally accepted to make a really good photocopy of the coin and send it out so that the original doesn't get muggled? I was thinking about going on a tangent of that, and making a shrinkydink of either side of a coin and gluing the two halves together, so that it would FEEL like a coin, but not make me miserable if a coin got muggled. I think geocoins are really cool, but I'm unwilling to spend money on something that nice only to have it get stolen by some greedy jerk that wants to have their fun at the expense of others (literally). I mean, even muggles are easier to tolerate than that ...
  2. I have a zire 72s, and am running xp. my palm installer software will not allow me to install the drivers as per the instructions on cachemate's website. when I try to drag the .prc files over to the installer screen, it tells me that they're incompatible, or something to that nature, and give me the little yellow triangle/caution symbol. I have downloaded the trial of gsak, and the trial of cachemate, to see if I can get them to work out for me. if they do, I'll get the full versions, of course, but before I shell out for them, I need to see if I can get them to work, and whether they make life easier, or just substitute one arduous task for another. I live in TN, and my family lives in MI. I travel between the two on occasion, and am in the military as well, so that also leads to travel. I would like to be able to run pocket queries and cache along a route queries for these, followed by dropping the waypoints, en masse, into my gps, and the cache pages onto my palm. I've had numerous occasions where I get to a cache and forget the cache size, an important hint, or worse yet, a "do not tread" request by the placer. now that I've been doing a little more caching, I write important things (like private property, etc) down on paper, but will still get myself trumped up with the small details. can anyone help make paperless caching work for me here?
  3. hey, actually, on that note: I got easygps before I was a premium member, and was dl'ing cache info onesie twosie onto my computer, then uploading them to my gps. something that I noticed but couldn't explain was that some of them (dl's from the site, not my gps) would go to the waypoints catergory and show up with the generic garmin "treasure chest" icon designated for geocaches. others would go under the geocaches catergory and show up with geocaching.com's green & white traditional geocache icon. did I possibly do something differently during the dl process that I might not have even realised I'd done, or is it something that could just be coded differently on some than others? these were .loc files, btw, not .gpx . I ask, because now that I am a premium member, I'd like to take advantage of the PQ and cache along a route options, but I don't want to end up duplicating everything or redoing things, etc. does anybody have a method (assuming I either grab cachemate, or just go all out & get GSAK) for going from PQ to "the coords are now marked as waypoints on my low-end gps, and the page data is now accessible on my PDA" ??? basically, along with the original question I asked, the other quandry I find myself in is that I have heard so many people giving out so many ideas, usually that involve a mapping unit or something else that requires a more sophisticated setup than mine, and trying to make heads or tails out of it all - between what pertains to me and what doesn't - has found me leaving a million tabs open on firefox and saying "eh ... I'll get around to reading all that stuff later" and then 2 days go by, then 3 ... and having ADHD doesn't help the situation either I was too tired to be typing then, and surely am now - I just found this and hope I am solving my own problem, thanks to briansnat's initial guidance ... http://www.cacheopedia.com/wiki/CacheMate and gsak has a downloadable getting started guide it says that gsak can be tried with all features for so many days, then you get a nag screen, and that cachemate's trial version has some features removed until registration, that said, I think I will try them both out & see what feels better, then I will post a reply to ... myself, I guess, in case somebody else comes along with the same question later.

  5. hi, I've got a garmin gps 72, a palm zire 72, not a lot of time to mess around with stuff (I have a toddler for a geocaching buddy, if that says anything), and really no money to budget for geocaching atm. oh yeah, and all of the extra steps, etc people are talking about with all of these programs are confusing and complicated to me atm, because I don't have the time to sit down and learn a program. all I want to be able to do is paperless caching: I want the caches on my gps so that I can find them, and I want to be able to pull up the cache data on my palm pilot in case I get stuck out there and need a hint or a map or whatnot (especially with the crappy reception I get under a single tree). my gps uses a data cable, not usb, and it is a monochrome display with POI only, no maps. my zire 72 has bluetooth technology that I've not figured out how to use yet, connects to my computer via usb, and has a huuge empty memory card (I formatted it because I thought I could use it in my wii ... no such luck). oh - and my cell is an old brick that can have the crap beat out of it without dropping a call, but does not play games or connect to the internet. if responding to this post, please tell me which program/combo of programs you reccomend, any pertinent info to get it up & running (while I consider myself to be quite computer literate, some programs have their own little quirks that defy logic, etc). and if you feel the need to smite all programs other than those of your choosing, please tell me why
  6. and for those who are unable/unwilling to buy on the internet, or simply do not have the patience to wait for the shipping, you can get one from bass pro shop for about $35-40 (circuit city and best buy do not carry it), and sometimes non " big-box"truck stops or boating/marine oriented shops will sell it as well. GPS 72 is not listed on the packaging as a supported system, but GPS 76 is. the regular 76's (NOT the map 76) parts are usually reverse-compatible with the 72. if you aren't sure, go to garmin's website and check the item number. the item number on the 4pin cable that I've described above is listed on garmin's accessories page for the 72.
  7. I don't see a Grey Zone anywhere, it's a RED ZONE, as In, Illegal, like the other poster said. You get caught, you get burned, it's not worth it. just for the record - I don't care what zone you want to put something into, or whether it is legal or not (I mean I do, but that wasn't really part of the original question), so much as what GC thinks of it. since a moderator already replied and told me that Groundspeak frowns on it, that's enough for me. I happen to enjoy geocaching, and am perfectly capable of figuring out that if a mod says "proooobably not a good idea ..." or something to that nature, that going ahead with said activity anyway might just result in me never getting to participate in my favorite activity again (and I"m not just saying it to be fecetious, they can do ip traces, etc ...). no, really all I wanted was to figure out the best way to make a cache with dvd's in it happen without it getting ruined for the cachers I place it for, nor without running me into the ground trying to keep it stocked. this probably has not come out the way I meant for it to, as I've had major lack of sleep here for a while ...
  8. ok I figured that would kinda be the case, now the question I have is: does anybody know of any ways that it's been done that have resulted in a cache of this type lasting a while & not getting muggled or stolen because some new cacher doesn't know enough to rehide stuff/watch out for muggles/whatever, or from somebody that's not been geocaching long enough to really appreciate it (and thereby be, hopefully, less likely to just raid a cache)??? I like the idea the other guys have, but I can see another cache like it being muggled again, too soon ...
  9. I started geocaching back in 03-04 at ft bragg to familiarize myself with gps technology, in prep for going to iraq, and to have fun while doing it. I found some caches on-post, went to iraq, came home & forgot about geocaching for a while. by the time I thought to get back into it, I'd forgotten my login, and no longer had the email acct I'd registered with. I remember that one that I (unsuccessfully) went after was called "home plate" or something like that (or maybe that was the hint?) and was near a school or park, and I may have logged a DNF on it ... one that I remember finding successfully was an ammo box hidden in the wooded median area near one of the PX's ... at the time, there was a poncho, some chemsticks, and other stuff that I can not remember hidden in it. I'm sure that if somebody named off a couple that used to be there and are archived, it would ring a bell. the ones that I've looked at on google earth that are listed on post are all from after that time, or are one that I did not attempt :/
  10. there was a cache near me called the "dvd trading cache" (GC11Q2K) here in knoxville, TN. looking at the log, it appears that somebody came and found it as their first and (at this time) only cache, then it dissapeared ... I'd like to do a similar cache, but out of concern for muggles, was wondering if it would get me burned if I put copied dvd's in there instead of originals. I would not be profiting from it, obviously, but it's a real grey zone. I've thought about (after I get my dues paid) making it a members only, or making it part of a puzzle or multi. anybody got any experience with this, or advice??? I miss the days when people actually traded up or even, and enjoy finding something fun or useful in a cache once in a while, and would like to make a contribution to that effort ... (I started my first acct in 2003, went to iraq, and when I got back, I forgot my username/login, no longer had the email addy I'd created it with, and all of the caches I could actually remember the loc of & tried to find on google earth seem to have been archived long enough ago that they're not even there ... I'm going to do a separate posting to try to figure out my old username ...)
