  1. There's now a specific forum for Jersey (and some for the other islands), thanks to Steve at kammneves.co.uk for setting it up. If anyone wants to discuss the Jersey Caching 'scene' then head on over to http://www.kammneves.co.uk/kacher/index.php cheers
  2. The only thing I'd change, if I could, would be that when the reviewer approves the cache he/she sets the new cache to OK but hidden, and then I as the cache owner get to decide exactly when I tick a box and it then becomes visible to everyone. At the moment I've no idea when people are going to first see it in the listing. Very minor point, but I do like control I might want to publish a new cache when the most prolific local FTF-er is busy at work, so that someone else gets a chance for a change, LOL
  3. In-car nav? I can't think of many caches over here that you could just drive right up to! Have a nice trip
  4. After a great day off, I'm now just 2 away from the full set, and the one with the longest walk (on very low tides) has been ticked off at last. And I've re-enabled my Pondlife cache now, with a new final location... who's going to be first to find at the new spot?
  5. Hiya Jersey Royals, hi L8HNB - hope you have a good time over here. There are 2 new caches for you this week too At Le Catel de Lecq I had been thinking of placing one somewhere on the mound itself, because it can be quite tricky to get up there, but that would have been a bit evil, LOL. Once again you beat me to it, and the surrounding 500ft are all yours Thanks for adding another to my todo list, I'm only 4 away from the full (local) set!
  6. Just to revive this thread a bit... I see there are now 51 caches in Jersey, but only 7 in Guernsey. I wonder why it hasn't caught on over there? Jersey http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?country_id=102 Guernsey http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?country_id=86 Anyhow, with 51 here it seems Jersey could promote itself as a Caching Holiday destination! Come over for a weekend break and see how many you can get Finally, do any of the other locals use these forums, I wonder.. please say hi.. perhaps we could use the forum to discuss things more?
  7. I can't help wondering how confused my GPSr would get if it was in orbit, ABOVE the satellites
  8. D on other channels shows that the differential adjustments have been applied to each channel.
  9. For the benefit of any UK 'newbies' ... also available in the UK as Addis Clip and Close, which I found in my usual supermarket when I actually bothered to look.. having wondered for years where to get them, LOL http://www.addis.co.uk/category_content.php?cat_id=22 I just need to find where our local cache placers get those snazzy logbooks from now.. ringbound with the elastic doodah that keeps them closed...
  10. As I said a few weeks ago on another thread... I'm perfectly happy with my plain yellow GPS60, it's not too big, the screen is clear, it works well, has USB and an external antenna socket, it gets me to the caches just fine (says he with a score of just 6 finds so far!), batteries last well, simple to use, etc etc. .. but then I've no experience of any others... but I didn't feel the need for colour and more mapping. I suppose better reception amongst tree would be good, but I don't know just how big an improvement the SiRF system is. Plenty of thread on here about that, if you want to play with the search thingy All the best ... and I'm up to 10 finds now.. ooooh... hehe
  11. Has there ever been any discussion about actually informing local police of all cache locations in the area, so that they will know what's what if someone reports a cache as suspicious?
  12. So what happened to Ted the Caver in the end? That's cruel leaving a story end like that!
  13. I'm glad you asked that, I'm after the same advice too. In "Duck tape? Any UK suppliers?" http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=144352 there's talk of preparing the surface with a wave of a blowtorch, or sanding it first, and possibly putting it through the dishwasher before the first coat to remove all traces of grease. A friend of mine who's into motorsport recommends a proper primer first, designed for plastic (spray on type from auto supplies shops), and then car paints like bumper/fender paints are designed to be flexible enough, moreso than gloss house paints. Maybe they're too shiny though? Don't we want a flat matt finish, although we want it to be hardwearing? It doesn't matter if dirt sticks to it, that helps with the camo. I await other replies with interest..
  14. I clicked on My A*sistant and got a popup error : Error: 'myass_content' is null or not an object Insert witty replies here....
  15. Make sure the GPS has a good clear view of the sky, with a good spread of satellites shaded in, plenty of good signal strength bars showing, preferably with the D symbols that show the WAAS system is applying corrections for greater accuracy. When you get better than 20ft estimated accuracy, proceed. Use the Find.. Waypoint.. Goto feature, and use the page that shows you your current heading and the arrow pointing to the cache.. and remaining distance. Use your skill and judgement to get to the cache coordinates. Then switch of the GPS and put it away. Start looking for the cache Good luck!
  16. Many thanks for your assistance, it sounds like it should be ok.. if not then it'll be a regular cache and people can explore if they want to. We shall see. Maybe I should crack on with painting the box first thanks!
  17. Thanks for all the replies... I don't know whether to seek out the tape or actually have a go at painting, now I'd probably put the box in the dishwasher with the evening's load, that would de-grease it before painting... squeaky clean. thanks
  18. I'm looking for camo duck tape, can't find any locally, wondering if anyone could recommend any mail-order suppliers.. at reasonable costs (especially postage)? I'm looking to cover a Addis click-n-seal box... or would paint be more durable in the long term? Would I need a special paint primer for the plastic surface? Painting is too fiddly and messy.. hence I'd rather tape it up. All voices of experience gladly listened to! thanks
  19. I'm considering placing a cache in a little known spot with some interesting features. I'd like to lead the cache hunters about the area and make sure they see the sights - about 4 places where I either can't find any way to hide a micro that wouldn't get discovered, or the site is a historic feature that shouldn't be meddled with (it would be againist the rules). Would it be ok to have a simple puzzle cache where the clues to one final location are as follows.. Go to the *feature1* .. which is closer? If it is *location1* then A = 3 if it is *location2* then A = 6 if it is *location3* then A = 4 ...repeat with 3 other features, each with three lat/longs, where the hunter has to figure out which is the closest coord. The wrong coords will be comfortably wrong, so GPS accuracy won't be an issue - it will be obvious which is right when you're there. This will give values B C and D, leading the the cache at xx xx.ABx xxx xx.CDx Would this be approved? I've seen puzzle caches where the A B C and D are derived from numbers on signs and plaques, my idea (it's probably been done before already?) is just a way to get each clue by taking a GPS reading by each of the 4 features I want them to enjoy (in effectively a multiple choice way to avoid accuracy problems). Is this OK, or against some rule? Should I hang my head in shame because it's very common?! If is is ok, do all 4 features have to be within a certain distance? thanks
  20. FWIW I'm perfectly happy with my plain yellow GPS60, it's not too big, the screen is clear, it works well, has USB and an external antenna socket, it gets me to the caches just fine (says he with a score of just 6 finds so far!), batteries last well, simple to use, etc etc. I don't need a compass, can't see the point.. whenever you move it shows you your heading within a moment or two.. it takes no time at all to work out which way is north and get your bearings. In fact my wife and kids actually call it my "compass thingy".
  21. Sounds like it's one of those subjective matter of opinion. With a cache you've got GPS coordinates that almost take you straight to it.. the challenge (to my mind) is finding the cache itself at 'ground zero', far more than the lesser challenge of getting there. Bear in mind I'm on an island of 40 square miles that's small enough to know so well it's no problem knowing how to get about. I suppose my outlook may change if I ever have the chance to hunt caches in an unfamiliar area... but even so I just consider parking assistance to be a courtesy to help cachers get into the right area to START the search. I've never considered the driving part of the hunt before... but maybe it is It all hinges upon that.. is the drive there part of the hunt, or does it start when you're on foot? Subjective, isn't it?
  22. Surely the easiest compromise is for a cache owner to provide parking coords (maybe two - the Nearest and the Pleasant Hike option) and then you have a choice of whether to use them or not. It doesn't hurt to provide the information and let the cachers decide how difficult they want the overall challenge to be?
  23. argh no... not the unabsorbant tea "towels" from the Ministry of Cr** Design.. those rectangular pieces of thin fabric that simply smear moisture into a thinner layer on the wet plate rather than remove it? There should be a law against calling them towels
  24. That PDF map is quite good, it shows all roads and whether they're major routes or narrow lanes, but doesn't name them. The newsagents over here all sell a more detailed map, but if you are as cheap as I am (!) you could walk into Jersey Telecom's shop in the high street and take a free phone book from a pile by the door.. the map is in there. I've actually ripped out the map pages from a spare phone book at work, and stapled them neatly into a handy reference that now lives in my car. Try the Portelet Inn after the "Noirmont" cache, the Pembroke after "Hole in One" at Grouville Common, the Seymour after "L'Avarizon", Corbiere Phare after "Five Mile Beach", the Devil's Hole pub after "Shooting the Devil", and the Smugglers Inn at Ouaisne ("way-nay") after "La Cotte"
  25. These islands aren't so big that you'd get lost all that easily - a paper map should do. All Jersey roads are name-signed, although Guernsey has yet to follow suit. It's almost as if they WANT people to get lost! As for pubs, they're all good, try them all! *hic* If there's anywhere in particular you'd like a waypoint for, let me know and I'll take a reading for you. Enjoy your trip!
