  1. Thanks for the input so far, I do truly appreicate it. I read thru the bookmarks pinned at the top before I created this topic. I guess I'm hoping someone has a list or can point out some neat urban caches near touristy parts of Seattle....the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, etc Thanks again
  2. Yesterday was my 2 year Cacheversary...I celebrated by getting find #575 and then I had the bright idea of trying to refind the #1 cache, the one that started it all. I thought to myself "this should be a cinch, after all I'm a veteran cacher now" Well I still did the same old things that happened on the first hunt: 1. Went in on one trail, bushwacked into the cache, and then found another trail out. 2. Didn't mark the car on the GPS so I had to wander back the long way. 3. Didn't use bug spray so I got eaten up. 4. Wandered around under the tree canopy while the GPS went slightly haywire. 5. Had a GREAT time. It's good to know some things never change.
  3. Hi Seattle Area Cachers ! I'm from the Toledo, Ohio area and my family will be visiting the Seattle area this summer. We're going to be visiting my wife's family in the Skykomish and Edmonds area as well as doing touristy stuff in Seattle. I'm gonna be with my "non-geocaching, yet tolerant of my love for geocaching" wife and my 2 young kids. So, I'm sure I can get some caching in but I was hoping that someone has some bookmark lists that tourists can use to find nice caches without scaling mountains or visiting Wal*Mart parking lots. Can anyone help me ?? Thanks very much !
  4. Those T-Shirts are from the 2003 Geocaching contest. They were $19.99 back in 2003, it's good to see they are "on sale" for $17.99 now.
  5. Back in June 2003 I found my first geocache and I took a sig item. This was before I even knew what the heck a sig item was. It was just a cool thing in a cahce. It was a handmade chainmail keychain made by VictoryMike. It hangs in my car now as a reminder of that day that changed my life (well, as far as hobbies are concerned) forever. VictoryMike still makes these keychains and they are as cool as ever.
  6. Here's weird for ya....I have one of those EXACT Jeeps on my desk right now. I bought it at Wal*Mart last fall/winter in the toy dept. for less than 2 bucks. I bought it cause it was very detailed and looked cool.......weird, very weird.
  7. I realize this isn't EXACTLY fitting the criteria of size but metal dog tags (for dogs not military) that you can engrave yourself at a Wal*Mart are pretty rugged for outdoor use. Maybe you could just use 2 or 3 of them to get to your size requirement. Plus they can't be too terribly expensive. Just a thought.
  8. Eagle Scout, Troop 925, Marshallville, Ohio, Buckeye Council - 1990 It's amazing, I echo every thought that The Leprechauns posted above. I started in Scouts when I was 12/13 and didn't finish my Eagle work until just before losing my elegibility. In fact I had the work done before turning 18 but didn't have my ceremony till after my birthday. It has served me well over the years, probably in ways that I don't even know about. If I ever have to make up a resume again, chances are pretty good that I'll include it on there, ya never know who might be reading your resume...another Scouter perhaps ?
  9. Jeremy - Since the majority of the cachers are semi-familiar with how these Jeeps were distributed last year, can we start the mailing list for organizations now ?? Thanks
  10. ...and hopefully it's not a multi-stage. "Let's see we saw a toe at stage 25, what was back in stage 13 tho ? I forgot already"
  11. I liked it too. Very to the point without, as you stated, rehashing the details and pros and cons. Good idea
  12. I am an experienced geocacher but still a newbie in paperless caching. The question I have deals with downloading new queries into my Palm. Assuming I already have a query loaded, and I go to load a new one (weekly, new info, new caches, etc) Does the query overwrite what I already have in the PDA ? Does it recognize that the PDA already contains GC1ABC and skip it or will I have to deal with 2 entries of GC1ABC ? Thanks
  13. It's very admirable that you are willing to part with your last one instead of making a trade for something else for your collection. Even tho you stated there were no trades, if you offered me the coin, I'd have to give you something in return...a hearty Thank You and a smile for reminding us all that it's the generosity of the wonderful people involved in geocaching that make it so much fun !
  14. I participated in last years contest and so I went back to the site to get the dates. The first mission's coordinates were released on June 24, 2004 and coords for the last case were released on August 23, 2004/ There were a total of 31 missions. So I'd expect something similar this summer.
  15. Tim I started a thread in Geocaching Topics. There is going to be a contest, I link to the news release in that thread Cheers TH
  16. The Magellan website posted a news release today announcing a worldwide ad campaign called "Be There" I quote from the release "...and promotions like the annual summer geocaching contest, which will also bear the theme “Be There.” So now we know there will indeed be a contest (even tho we assumed so) wow, a new Magellan contest AND new Jeep TBs, this summer's gonna almost be like heaven. Happy Hunting
  17. I found 12 caches on Disney property, it was a fun time. Use Lake Buena Vista in the USPS zip search. All Disney properties are in that zip.
  18. Here in NW Ohio we have our share of new cache droughts but recently we've had about 25 new caches in a week and a half. Generally tho I think that some areas just need a match lit under their a_ _ All it seems to take around here is one or 2 new caches and that inspires others to get going and we have a small flood soon enough. So, I'd suggest getting a couple fellow cachers as well as yourself and place about 3 or so new ones in the area and see what happens. if nothing happens.......move Good Luck
  19. I would say about half full as long as it's not half full of crappy stuff. There's a super fine cacher friend of mine in the area that always jam packs the ammo box with really good stuff and it always seems a bit like a puzzle to make everything fit back in nicely. So as long as there's some room to make closing it up easy then fill er up. (on the other sub-subject about blankets and such, I went to Wal*Everything and bought a 4x6 plastic tarp for about 2 bucks then cut it in half and put the 4x3 sheet in my pack...I use it to kneel on in snow or sit on in wet weather or in the case of a full cache, to dump contents upon) Happy Easter.....go find caches or eggs, your choice.
  20. I'm not picking on you, I'm just offering my opinion. Seems to me that before you come to the forums to ask the opinions of fellow cachers you should contact the owner of the new mico and tell him/her the exact same thing you typed here. THEN, if he/she says "to heck with you" you come back to the forums and ask for advice. Maybe they thought the area was prime for a cache, but didn't know about possible access to the woods. Good Luck
  21. wow, this is getting a little crazy. Jeep presented gc.com with 5001 Jeeps, this, I believe would be an investment (people DO lose out on investments) I sincerely doubt that Jeep gave a crap if half of them made it....in fact they'd have been jumping up and down if half of them made it. What's the initial cost per piece here, like 15 cents for the diecast and 10 cents for the tag...so about 25 cents ?? That's about 1250 bucks, let's be generous and say 2 grand. I'd be more POed that the 3 real Jeep vehicles they gave away were awarded to people that might not be geocachers at all. (I dunno who won or if they are cachers) I read everything in the forums when the idea was first introduced last summer and the initial idea was for Jeep to "own" and release 4000 Jeeps, there were an additional 1000 made becasue they KNEW that many would stall in private collections. Plus there's Jeremy's personal Jeep, the 5001st......hmm, should HE be allowed to keep one ?? I "ordered" the Jeeps for distribution to my local caching club. We received 40 of them in the mail. I logged each of them into our clubs account as a starting point. What I found was that there was a duplicate. That's right 2 Jeeps with the same number. I emailed TPTB at gc.com and by gosh do you know what the response I got was ??? They said to KEEP the dupe as a souvenir. *GASP* a souvenir....wow, amazing eh ?? So there were only 5000 numbers (or less if this happened elsewhere) to begin with. I don't see Moun10Bike whining about some (or a lot) of cachers keeping his geocoins, he has to know that's gonna happen, they have become a geocaching icon. Yet he still let's them out into the world and orders more....and those are close to 5 bucks a piece. This stuff happens. It was an advertising promotion. If a PERSON spent their money and set out 5000 items then I think this discussion would contain merit in regards to whether it was ethical to keep one or not. Thank you
  22. 'Twas a mistake somehow....the event has returned to all access. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Paws
  23. testing testing, is this thing on ?
  24. The percentage of hybrid car sales is very, very small still, so this has to be further away than we can imagine. Plus, if EVERY car has to have a GPS for this, and it's not fair if every car doesn't, then we either have to wait for every citizen of a state to buy a new car that has GPS enabling built int or some gov't agency is going to dole out millions to purchase GPS tracking devices, fronting the money they aren't making now in order to make more later ?
