  1. Ahh, ok. Perhaps I really didn't leave it long enough then, thinking an hour would be enough. I will take it out and leave it in a clear area for a good couple of hours and see what happens.
  2. Hi, Thanks for the reply. I left it motionless and searching a couple of times while out for at least an hour each time and it didn't lock onto anything. That there's no glitch in the way any of the software works makes this all the more puzzling. There is also nothing on the Garmin site to hint at a reason, I tried that before posting here.
  3. Hi, I have an eTrex Legend that I haven't used for around 1.5yrs. It's been stored without batteries and was looked after carefully when I did use it in the past. After starting to do geocaching again again recently (or trying to!), I find that the Legend will not lock onto any satellites. I took the unit out with me three times over the last week or so and had it switched on for a few hours in total. Not once did it manage to lock on to even a single satellite. I've tried it with various different batteries (new, rechargeable etc.), with WAAS on and off, in weather with clear skies, no obstructions, to no avail. It was never the quickest GPS unit, but always managed to find plenty satellites within a minute or so of starting up. Not any more. The unit seems to work perfectly otherwise, with all menus and everything else looking fine. I'm baffled. Can anyone shed any light on what might be going on? I don't want to buy a new GPS receiver unless I have to. Cheers
  4. Delta68 - I emailed the very helpful guys at Groundspeak and asked for the name to be changed. The reason: When I joined as jim_h, I didn't know that most people have a team name and wanted TheCluehunter3. Hope that helps :-) Jimbo
  5. Thanks for the suggestion Nediam, I'll drop them a line to see if the hotel has any vacancies :-)
  6. Hi all, I retrieved the Dog Tag travel bug a few days ago and am looking to place it again. My wife is visiting Langley Mill in Derbyshire soon and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to add a few miles to the bug. I'm not going and as she's unfamiliar (cough <blonde>) with the workings of the GPSr, I need a cache she'd be able to find without it. Erm, she's not very good at reading maps either. Sorry, I know this is a tall order, but I'm going to ask anyway... Is there a cache in the Langley Mill area that is very easy to find that she could add a bug to please? I could look through the list, but it wouldn't really answer my question. Thank you kindly, Jimbo The Cluehunter 3 P.S. Don't tell her I called her blonde! She is blonde, but she's also quite scary.
  7. Well, he let me join! But, I did sneak in under the radar with a bit of misdirection. Nice site though Jaz, even if you are a Yorkshireman! I'm a proud Lancashire lad, born and bred. Have lived in Yorkshire since 1990, but am still only an honorary member of this strange county! I don't know who said the Wars of the Roses was over, but they were wrong hehe! All the best, Jimbo
  8. It was slow an hour or so ago, but seems fine again now.
  9. LOL! Yes, I was thinking as I wrote how many yawns I'd induce from the veterans hehe! I thought of it mainly as an after action report (aar) for noobs who have visited here, but have no clue what it's all about. I must admit, I was a tad confused for a while. And still am! Anyway, I won't keep inflicting them on the forum, I promise. I'll just pm you keehotee as someone who's shown a special interest. If each one is different, you could never get bored All the best, Jimbo
  10. Thank you all for the informative replies. Incidentally, we found a travel bug in a cache this afternoon and brought it home. After checking, I found out its mission is to travel around Yorkshire, at least to begin with. So, we'll help it along. All the best, Jimbo
  11. Hi all, I've added to the log and uploaded a couple of pictures of our second geocache find. We had an enjoyable trip out this aft to Ogden water. It's somewhere we visit regularly anyway as we live only a few minutes away. However, I must admit that none of us had ever gone to the spot where the cache is hidden, and I'm so glad we did as it's a beautiful place! Anyway, we found the cache with help from the clue. Things inside were a little damp, so I dried them as best I could and replaced everything. We also took the travel bug and will be adding a few miles to it in the near future. So, it's been another great afternoon out in the amazing Yorkshire countryside. Thank you to gerard229 for placing the cache. We've come home tired but happy to a rather nice homemade stew and dumplings. A perfect end to a very pleasant day. All the best, Jimbo
  12. Hi all, We're off to visit another cache today, so everyone's excited One thing I'm really not clear on, even after reading FAQ, forum posts, websites etc. etc. If we were to find a travel bug or geocoin in a cache, what exactly are we supposed to do? Leave them, take them? How would we know what to do? I realise travel bugs are meant to visit lots of places and can be tracked, but when you're at a cache and find one, are there instructions on what action to take? Are geocoins simply collectible or is there another purpose? Thank you kindly, Jimbo The Cluehunter 3
  13. Well, how exciting was that?!?!?!?!? Where's the next one? As the day is wet and looking like rain, we picked an easy one to start with, local to us. I had the map and waypoint loaded into the Legend and a print out of the cache details. All set. They are renovating a large part of the park, so we walked almost to the cache location only to find it all fenced off! Hmmm. So, retracing steps we took a different route and managed to get to the place. After spending a while wandering around the spot trying to get the gps to give an average reading from different directions, we had to decipher the clue. The problem is the Legend kept losing the signal under the trees, so it was hard to get a good idea of how far we were away. With the clue, things went much more smoothly. There was one place where I was sure the cache "should" have been hidden, but it was a bit too obvious really. My wife and son wandered off a way to check somewhere else. It's quite a dull day and dark under the trees (should have had a torch), but I thought I spotted something smooth that looked out of place and called them back. Sure enough, we had found the cache container. It was such a buzz to actually find one, I can't describe the feeling. But, I'm sure you lot already know!! We waited for a muggle to carry on walking away with their dog and then opened the container. I left a few pieces of paper and signed one to say we'd visited. It was interesting to read the notes left by everyone else too. Charlie picked out a small toy alien looking head to take away and we left a small Marvin's Magic kit with a few tricks inside. It only just fit into the container. We had a nice ride on the train on the way out of the park too. All in all, that was great fun. Charlie thought the finding of the treasure was amazing (he's only 4). We're off to do another one tomorrow. It depends on the great Yorkshire weather exactly where we end up. I'm well and truly hooked! Thanks to geominime for setting the cache. We've filled in the log page and uploaded a pic too. Take care, Jimbo The Cluehunter 3
  14. The Wombles - I love your name! I am very enthusiastic, yes. I'm one of the people who buys every treasure hunt book upon release and spends months of my life obsessed by the clues, not that I have ever won anything. It all began with Conundrum all those years ago! So, to have hundreds of mini treasure hunts (sort of) on my doorstep is too good an opportunity to miss. Deceangi - Email sent, request for username change made. Fingers all crossed! :-)
  15. Hi, My Garmin Legend arrived this morning (woohoo!), so I'm not going to be allowed to spend any more money for the next couple of years at least. With the package came a voucher for the Expansys website shop. You get £10 off if you spend £20 or more. If you would like the voucher code to get the discount (one use only), please pm me and I'll let you have it. First come, first served I'm afraid. Cheers, Jimbo
  16. There's much to learn by the sounds of it...WGS84...Now, that was effectively double dutch until I googled it and read the wiki. It was still double dutch, so I googled again and read a website in English! Thanks for the tip though, I'd never have known about that one. Even though I've never done this geocaching malarky I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone would either take something and leave nothing in return, or just dump any old rubbish instead. Doesn't that just defeat the object and spoil the fun?!?!? We've already decided what we're going to leave in each cache. Something small and probably fun that would appeal to kids of any age and that is readily available in shops. We agreed that a budget of £2ish per cache is about right. After all, how much would an afternoon at the cinema cost? The last time I went, a (small) bottle of pop and bag of M&M's was around £5! This is a cheap day out, good excercise, educational for kids and sounds like great fun. My stock of batteries are all on charge as we speak (sorry to my son for raiding a couple of his toys! I know, I'm a bad parent, but it's in a good cause!) and I am busy reading GPS for Dummies, which is very good so far. My wife is sick of hearing the word geocache and is pretending she's not interested. But, she also spent an hour trying to figure out what we could call ourselves. Bless! You know, I've never been quite as enthusiastic about something like this since Conundrum. Showing my age now!! I wonder how many of you remember it too? Roll on weekend! All the best, Jimbo Save the cheerleader, save the world.
  17. Thank you for the replies! I don't think my post was clear enough after reading it again...I'm looking to buy some things to put or swap into any cache I find. I'll make sure I don't take any MacD toys or my Magnum 357 pistol along lol! Do people really put guns and ammunition in?!?!? Our 4yr old son loves walking, so for us to add a treasure hunt into the mix will make it something really special for him. No doubt I won't get to see the gps once he realises what it's for! Typical. I hope the weather holds for the weekend. Still, even if it's pouring down I'm off out on Saturday! All the best, Jimbo Save the cheerleader, save the world.
  18. Hi, I've been dying to have a go at geocaching for quite a while, but never had the opportunity. I have literally just placed an order for a Garmin Legend after reading all the reviews and testimonials from people online. It seems like the best one to go for at a reasonable price. Postal services permitting, it will be delivered tomorrow. That gives me a day or two to play with it before venturing out into the wilds of Halifax, West Yorkshire on Saturday and Sunday with my family. I can't wait In fact, I'm off into Halifax this aft to buy some things to put into a cache. Is there anything in particular I should buy? Yes, this is probably a pretty pointless post, but I'm champing at the bit now! All the best, Jimbo Save the cheerleader, save the world.
