  1. Just a thought -- If the offending party is just wanting to add coin icons and/or beef up their TB numbers, if you decide to discuss the matter with them and try to come to some compromise, how about offering to let them "Discover" the bug or coin before it's placed in the cache? This would remove the incentive for them to actually remove it from the cache, unless, of course, they're intent on keeping it for some other reason.
  2. DeLorme: Now you can send caches directly to your PN-Series GPS units from DeLorme using the Send to GPS feature on every cache page. Download the browser plugin. ==================================== I downloaded the Delorme browser plugin and it seems to work fine and will download cache info directly to my PN-20 as long as I'm doing it from IE, but doesn't recognize that I've downloaded and installed the plugin when I'm accessing from AOL 9.1. It continues to prompt me to download the plugin whenever I try to send cache info to my GPS. Should it work from within AOL or is that not supported?
  3. Congratulations, Dave! I'm at a little over 300 since last October. My husband is completely disinterested in caching, so I normally just go out alone. I have talked one of my sisters into going a few times, but she's still working and isn't always available, plus she's a skeet shooter and isn't really interested in starting a new hobby. I've recently met a few of our local cachers and I'm going out tomorrow morning with one to try to pick up a cache by a lake that we'll have to hike a ways into. Didn't really want to do that one by myself! Hope your next 500 go as quickly as your first!
  4. Congratulations on the start up movements! Sounds like theirs are going great guns. But it also sounds like your's is doing like mine. My first one got picked up 11 days after I released it and hasn't been re-released yet. Number 2 got dropped about 10 days ago and is still where I left it. Just dropped number 3 this morning. I've got 2 more tags that I need to find something to attach them to, so they can get started. I figure the more I have out there, the less obsessed I'll be with any one of them not moving! (Well, it sounds good anyway!) Good luck with the bugs!
  5. I released my first bug on 3/10/08 and it was picked up for the first time today. Oklahoma Dreamcatcher I've got two more that I just got ready to launch and will release as soon as I find appropriate caches to drop them in. Christmas Bear Best of Breed Hopefully they'll all have long lifes!
  6. I released my very first bug on 3/10/08 and it was picked up today for the first time! So, 11 days! I've got 2 more bugs that I've finally got ready to release, so as soon as I can find an appropriate cache to drop them in, I'll have some more to watch over. I'm hopeful that the more I have out there, the less obsessed I'll be with the individual bug's movements.
  7. In some cases, you can do nothing but write small! OK, sounds like the consensus is going to be to resign log whenever possible or do other documentation if signing isn't feasible. I appreciate the comments. Thanks all!
  8. OK, thanks, Blue. The only downside to signing the logbook again was the possiblity of causing the cache owner to have to do maintenance more often due to the logbook filling up faster than it normally would. If there's no real point in signing the log for the dip and people are willing to trust the integrity of the dipper, guess it's back in my court as to which way to go!
  9. I've seen lots of information regarding the moving of travel bugs and also for the process of "dipping" travel bugs to track where they've been even if you don't actually leave them in a cache. My question, however, is if you use a cache that you've previously found and logged both in the logbook and online and want to reuse it for "dipping" do you need to sign the logbook again? The reason I ask this question are the several comments I've seen stating that the travel bug actually needs to travel to the cache that it's being dipped into. I understand the reasoning for this, but as logbooks themselves get full and need to be replaced, especially the ones in the small and micro caches, I wasn't sure if I should contribute to filling up the logbook just to dip a travel bug. I can see where it would be desirable to re-log in the logbook to show that you actually were back at the cache site at the time the "dip" occurred, but thought I'd check to see what the opinion of the forum was (especially before I actually decide to dip a bug). Thanks for your opinions!
  10. As previously posted, I changed my logging habits after reading this thread and I try to write a little something about the weather, the hide, the coordinates, or basically anything to get away from just the TFTC that I initially thought was what was supposed to be done. It helped to reinforce my logging efforts when one of the hiders, BigGuy in Texas, who has many hides in the McAllen, Texas area where we're wintering, sent me an email letting me know that she appreciated my logs. It encouraged me to continue what I was doing. Thanks BGTX!
  11. I'm SO glad I didn't get into this while I was still working! I was in State government and they were so paranoid about employees' use of the internet that they had tracking software installed and would do a monthly review of the sites you visited! Since I was able to retire at 51 a few years ago, I can "yak" about caching whenever and, since we travel in an RV, where ever I happen to be. My only regret is that I didn't get into this sooner!
  12. Thanks to both of you. I've downloaded the programs and script and they are just too cool. I appreciate your assistance!
  13. However, unlike cache listings, I've so far been unable to locate the "Ignore Thread" button that would eliminate a thread from continually showing up on my topics listing. What is preventing you from being able to ignore things that irritate you or in which you have no interest? You're a huge fan of "Off-Topic" I take it. I do ignore those threads that I've gotten fed up with. I was just wanting to maximize my on-line time by eliminating those listings from my screen. I do appreciate your helpful suggestion, however. And, no, I've never even been to the "Off-Topic" area yet. The Announcements, Getting Started, Geocaching Topics and Travel Bugs areas keep me busy enough.

  15. We got our GPSr last summer while we were in Montana. Basically so my husband wouldn't have to print out our trip maps any longer and also to mark where he was taking his photographs. In October when we got back home, I started geocaching. He has no interest in it (muggle through and through!), so I cache alone. I try to be very aware of my surroundings and if I'm uncomfortable in an area, I'll just skip it until another time and if it's still not one I want to try alone, I'll just forget that one or try to talk my sister into going with me. The more I go out, the more confident I've become about caching. I did pick up a whistle from one of my found caches and put it on my GPSr's lanyard. I also carry my cell phone with me if I'm leaving my vehicle for any length of time. I also tell my husband what area I'm going to that day and try to give him an approximate time that I should be back. (If I'm running later than anticipated, I call to let him know.) We're currently in South Texas for the winter and I'm caching in totally unfamiliar areas. Since I don't have any knowledge of these neighborhoods, I'm more cautious than at home and even more likely to drive past any cache area that looks "funny". Basically, it just boils down to being careful and aware of your surroundings (don't get so fixated on the hunt that you forget to look around once in a while). Good luck!
  16. Welcome to the addiction as everyone here seems to say. Hope that you enjoy it as much as I have. I just started last October and only get out once or twice a week for 2-4 caches at a time, but I've been enjoying myself. Have fun! There's lots of good information here in the forums (sometimes you do have to do a little digging to find it) and most everyone is pretty willing to help out. Good luck with your hunting!
  17. OK Mapless, started partying early for New Year's Eve, huh?
  18. What a good, generous cacher you are! Just add a note and that'll go to the owner to let them know what has transpired.
  19. I, too, have had this problem on occasion and finally got around it, most of the time, by adjusting the margin settings on the page layout for my printer. You might try doing this and then preview your print before submitting it to the printer. Good luck!
  20. With travel bugs and geocoins, you don't have to trade for them. An exception is made, however, for "Hotels". These are generally a little larger caches where several bugs/coins can be left. Most of the ones I've seen listed do request that you not completely empty them out or to trade in as many as you take out. The directions on these "Hotels" are usually found on the cache's listing page. As far as the "swag" goes in the caches, it does vary wildly. I do try to leave interesting things, but you never know what will be of interest to the next cacher. I could care less about McToys, for example, but there's lots of kids out there that do like them. Just enjoy the hunt/find and, if you do find something that you lke in the cache, it'll just be a special bonus! I do revisit, on occasion, the cache listings that I've visited to see if what I've left has been picked up, if it's been noted in others logs. That's a good indicator that you're leaving good swag. Welcome to the addiction and good luck!
  21. So far I've only been doing urban or city park caches, so I don't have to take "survival gear" with me! GPSr with whistle attached to lanyard PDA (Palm Z22) Cell phone Digital camera Overview map of where I'm going that day Swag Pen Zip-loc bags (snack & sandwich size) Clipboard (disguise! ) Beverage Duct tape (non-camo), will replace with camo tape when I find some. (Just added this after finding a cache with a hole in the side. Thought I could have done a patch if I'd had it!) Vehicles have first aid kits in them, so until (if) I do a longer hiking cache, I'll rely on them. Don't stay out long enough for batteries in GPSr & PDA to run down, but do have a 12-volt cord for GPSr that I can plug in and recharge on the way to the next cache if needed.
  22. Way to go! At the rate I'm going, it'll be next summer before I get to that point. Although my home in OK is a fairly rich caching area, the area we're in now is pretty sparse until you get about 25 miles from where we're parked for the winter! Not so far as to be unreachable, however! Hope you enjoy the next 100 as much as the first 100.
  23. Welcome to geocaching. I’m new also with only around 35 finds, but I’ve never yet had an encounter with an LEO. Like you, I’m sure I’d be somewhat taken aback to be approached by one, but just remember that, although we’re trying to be stealthy, we’re not doing anything wrong! Just be prepared to explain geocaching and show them what you’re doing. What I’ve thought out a couple of times is what to do if I am approached. Sometimes just working it out in advance in your head will help you cope if it does happen. Don’t let the possibility put you off of the hobby! Good luck and enjoy!
  24. Go to "MY ACCOUNT" on the main page, then under "SEARCH OPTIONS" there's a link to "Update home coordinates". Go there and change the coordinates on that page. That should do it! Good Luck!
