  1. Per the original Clayjar D/T rating system

4 = climb requiring use of hands ...

    +1

15 feet isn't high but it still depends on other factors.

There are a couple of 15 footers near me that are very tough to get to because there are no branches low enough to reach from the ground. On both, i was able wrap my arms around the trunk and shimmy up. However, most people who have found them weren't able to do that. They used a ladder or some other device to get them. Even though most of the finders used "special equipment" to access, not everyone needed to. In these cases, a 4.5 seemed the better rating.

If you happen to fall from 15 foot you have strong chance of being hurt bad ( pushing up daisies ). So I would say D-5 Even if you use a ladder, thats considered special equipment as is any safty gear, so it would make it a D-5

Difficulty has to do with finding the cache, not accessing it.

For example, we have a huge rural mailbox around 35' in a tree, needing rope to access.

It's a D1.5/T5 only because of leaves in the Summer (and it's camo'd in a leaf pattern).

Some branches above broke off and now it sorta could be a D1, but we realize that many accessed for it's D/T combo (that challenge thing). :)

Your correct, my brain was some where else. :)

  2. Could be a T5 if climbing gear is required. So depends on how you climb to the cache, some trees have branches that allow you to climb like it was climbing stairs others have no branches at all.

When using a ladder it could just be a T2-T2.5.

  3. Or if you're so bored with everything geocaching has to offer because you've seen and done it all... go for this one: GCG822

The person who finds this one should do a mike drop and pull a Bobby Fischer disappearing act. Legend.

Of course the first to find this one would probably post a NM, tftc.

OH heck, I've been to that one twice. Was not all it is cracked up to be. Only seen two Great whites and One Giant squid on the way down.

  4. From today's newsletter:

Plus, you can earn the International Geocaching Day 2016 souvenir by attending an event or logging a geocache on August 20. (Bonus points for doing both!)

IMPORTANT: International Geocaching Day Events must be submitted no later than Saturday, August 6.

  5. Just one of any of the four does not fit me. One, Two and Four for would be a good description of me. .

I - The podium seekers: No matter what cache is published, you'll visit them immediately to seek a FTF, STF or TTF.

II - The sweepers: All the available caches in your area, no matter what type of cache, must turn into a smiley.

IV - The passers-by: Every once in a while you'll visit a cache that you're passing by anyway.

  6. Thanks guys this has been very helpful. I will not be so discouraged not when my device points to somewhere that a cache simply wouldn't be. Many thanks

I have seen several caches in that "somewhere that a cache simply wouldn't be." location. :) So a lot of times reviewing some of the logs may help before you give up.

    Happy Hunting

  8. Im selling off a large part of my unactivated Geocoin Collection. Most of them have been out of stock for years and are hard to find. Selling them off to buy a pair of bikes for my wife and myself to hit some biking trails after more caches. :) The more you buy, the better the deal you will get.

  9. It's already a rule to trade even or up. The problem is that humans are human - some are selfish, some are inconsiderate, some are thieves. Unless there's an armed guard at the cache site watching the trades, how does the CO enforce it?

I love the Found It logs that mention that the CO should come out and refill a cache with swag, because it's running low. Ummm, it's not a prize box; it's for exchange.

As to bad swag: I've thrown dog biscuits out of caches, removed what I assume is vape fluid (I guess? It was like cough syrup but said it contained nicotine) and cigarette lighters from caches, etc. All these things are listed as not allowed in the rules, but who reads and follows rules anymore?

    *Edited for really bad composition*

YES YES YES we need armed guards

  10. Here in the upper Midwest (MN) there seems to be a rash (no pun intended) of morons who hide their geocaches in poison ivy patches.

Anyone else run into this problem? These should be reconsidered.

For us poor folks here in Al. If you walk off the pavement there is almost always poison Ivy. Then if by some chance you found the one chunk of woods with out it, there is always a good chance that the rattle snake I placed next to the cache might still be there. If not him the always trusty Copperhead might be there as his night shift. But if you missed him you may find his nice neighbor Mr Cotton Mouth if you happen to be near any water. Then there is always the Trusty Mrs Black Widow and Mr Brown Recluse hiding out in those dark places.

just a few of the things we run into here. So if your biggest problem is PI, your lucky :)

  11. Well, on the linked page it reads:

I don’t live in the US. Can I still earn the Get Outdoors Day Souvenir!

Yes, you can! The Get Outdoors Day souvenir is part of a bigger initiative with the American Recreation Coalition and other US-based outdoor organizations to get more Americans outside during National Get Outdoors Month. Given the interest expressed by geocachers all over the world in participating in Get Outdoors Day, we’ve decided to make the souvenir available to anyone who finds a geocache or attends an event (anywhere in the world!) on June 11, 2016.

    So definitely not US only.

It's now not US only. It was US only when it was first announced, hence the "started out as" part of the OP's post.

apparently started out as a souvenir for only the USA.

Unless it was changed with in a hour of it showing up on the blog it has always said it was for all
