  1. Oh yeah, that reminds me..... along with everything else we carry, we also have atleast two 12V converters (plug standard plug into cigarette lighter), atleast 2 GPS power cords and usually all 3 cell phone charging cords. We have never had a problem with dead batteries.
  2. I like that one. Short, sweet and to the point. Do you have it posted somewhere for general use or is it still a personal cache note?
  3. You can find them in a number of places from a number of different people/groups in a number of different formats. You could start with geocaching.com its self or check out Texas Geocaching Association or Tucker's Geocaching Stuff or WNAG or here or this group from Arkansas. That should be enough for you to find the right size, style and printing format that suits you best.
  4. Think most of us have been there! Exactly what I did today. Almost stepped on the cache while heading to where I thought it should be.
  5. Not really into putting bumper stickers on the van either. But, I definitely think it's a neat idea & I would add it to my collection of FTF prizes. Now if you get those oval stickers (like MrsB said) that had a big 'FTF' in the middle and your tagline around the bottom edge (or something similar), I might be more tempted to actually use it instead of just collecting it.
  6. Yep, that's the best way
  7. Sounds like us. When all 4 of us are headed out for a caching day we have 4 GPSr, 1 Blackberry, 2 cellphones, 3 FRS radios, laptop & cellular modem for laptop. We have found it worthwhile to take more than 1 GPSr because (like todd said) you never know when one might be a little off and another more accurate for that location.
  8. I think it would be a great idea to place caches in remote areas with a WOW factor. I would love to hunt some like that. But, I think you might have trouble getting approval when you can only provide maintenance once a year. Maybe one of the reviewers can direct you to the reviewer for that area and you can work out any problems directly with them.
  9. --- oops, read something wrong. reply didn't make sense when read correctly ---
  10. I guess I'm not normal. Personally I would have taken the driveway just before the KFC. Being from out of town, yes there is a chance I would have missed it and drove through the KFC lot. Once it was obvious I was in the lot, I would have known it and not mistaken it for the hotel lot. It appears the lots, even though they connect, are clearly separated by landscaping. Not sure about the area you are from but where I live "cash only" tow companies are prime targets for the attorney generals office. Been bunches go down and flames of glory crying the same story you purport to be their reason for taking cash only. Didn't stand up in court. Why? The did as many do, and refuse to provide proper receipts for the cash, refuse to release cars to owners after they refused to provide receipts and ultimately were proven to be crooks, criminals and just plain shysters (many often towing illegally). There are reputable tow companies out there - most of them take cash, checks (with appropriate ID - check 21 laws make stop payments a moot point), or credit cards (instant authorization and crediting these days - no waiting to process the authorization). If they won't take credit, check and insist on cash they are likely operating at a minimum a little off the level and I'd highly recommend getting the local authorities involved. Yes, I will give you that there are some laws about checks that protect the business owner more than before, but it still isn't fully accepted. And, yes, instant authorization for credit cards is available but have you checked the cost of the wireless card reader fees lately? And there are reputable tow companies that accept 'cash only' in certain situations (like this one). I would like to see the exchange with the 'local authorities' when they showed up. 'Officer, he is trying to legally towing a car I parked illegally and he won't accept my out-of-town check that I can't prove won't bouce in the morning. Make him take it, please.' -edit for spelling error-
  11. Although I don't own a TB, I do know that forcing someone to 'exchange' bugs will get you title of Warden at the local TB Penitentiary. Oh yeah, forgot to add..... What makes your opinion of my TBs mission more important than mine? Just because you think it's dumb or boring doesn't mean I didn't put thought into it and/or maybe some sentimental reason for the journey.
  12. I've been sitting back enjoying this but I have been holding my tongue long enough. [rant] If the sign says don't park there, then you don't park there. If it says you may be towed, then you may be towed. The property owner (KFC) has every right to enforce their rules on their property. They don't even have to tell you, doing so is just a courtesy. I highly doubt KFC corporate would be upset that a franchisee was having illegally parked cars legally removed from their property. As far as the towing company, it costs money to operate the trucks. If they left the yard for a call, the company is already in the red. If they spend more fuel, payroll, equipment use, etc to start the towing process, then they have every right to recoup the costs. The 'cash only' policy is for a very simple reason. It prevents people from using a check then stopping payment the next morning. It also stops people using credit cards that are already over their limit and would be declined in the morning. Obviously this isn't being used as a 'cash grab' since receipts were obviously available. You even quoted the sign about the boot removal fee but didn't seem to read all of it. When I see a commercial on TV and they state that prices start at $XX.00, I know for a fact that if I am getting over the bare minimum I am going to pay more than the starting price. You say the sign stated the minimum fee is $95 but then was surprised it was more? [/rant] sincerely, A Small Business Owner
  13. I never thought about that one. Great idea that I will use in the future. In the mean time, the bug I have been waiting on was logged into the cache and I was able to retrieve it correctly.

  15. I don't send notifications to my phone, but I'm quite certain people who do it are using email enabled phones, and these are not text messages. Me, I have the internet turned off on my cell phone, although it is capable of receiving email. Believe me, you don't want the internet turned on on any cell phone account which includes a teenaged girl. The best you can do with text messaging is to make "field notes" that you can refer to and edit when logged in on the website. You can also receive decrypted cache hints via text. Tried it once (just at home, not in the field), and it works pretty good, and sends back the hint within seconds. So my babbling aside, I'm sure someone who has set up email notifications to their cell phone will come along shortly. As one of the 'certain people' that receive them I can tell you for a fact that they DO come is as a text message and not as an email. Actually I have them come in as picture messages that has a 1000 character limit instead of a trunkated 160 character message. Hey, c'mon now, "certain people" is taken out of context. I was just surfing the forum, and was first to respond. I'm actually shocked there aren't more responses to this thread, considering all the people whom I know to get new cache alerts on their cell phones. And not that I know what I'm talking about, but if you had new cache notifications sent to an email account that was used for nothing but new cache notifications, and that email account was sent to an email-enabled cellphone, why wouldn't it be an email? (as opposed to a text message). I did understand what you meant by 'certain people' and knew you were just poking fun but my dry semi-sarcastic reply failed without the facial expression & voice inflection to go with it. Yes, if you have an email-enabled phone you can get it that way, but it isn't the only way to receive it on your cell phone. I understand completely about blocking internet on cell phones belonging to teenage females. I have 2 of them & have to block everything except standard text messages and actual calls. Since I got the modem for my laptop, I have taken internet & email off my phone too. It's just as easy to pull out the laptop & check, plus its a lot easier on these old eyes. -edit for spelling-
  16. Personally, I used to have mine named 'phone notifications' and 'email notifications.' I had published, disabled & archived sent to my phone (just in case I think about grabbing one while I was out and about) but I had full information (published, disabled, archived, coordinate change, needs maintenance and unarchived) sent to my email so I could check it out when I had more time.
  17. Yes for me too, including the one I found today.

  19. Here, here and here are logs that can be printed in either MS Word or PDF. Here and here are log sheets that open in PDF only.
  20. I use an Explorist 400 that was a gift from my Dad. I have never input any information into it either by hand or as a download. I look at the coordinates for the cache, then the coordinates on the display and determine which way I need to walk to get where I want to be. Personally, having the GPS tell me which way to walk takes away from the 'fun' of using your brain and the compass to figure out where GZ is.
  21. Just to let you know, this absolutely slayed me. I think, just to even things out for the little people, that I'll place a cache with one of those amusement park signs next to it that says, If you are taller than this sign, you may not log this find, you rich premium member elitist. Now that had me rolling. But its also the start of a neat little idea. Similar but not exactly the same.
  22. Same here. I live in Portage, close to Trumbull, Mahoning, Stark and Columbiana and have cached in all but never met another while caching.
  23. Yes, you wait until it is dropped off before you retrieve it from the cache. This make take a few days, so just be a little patient. I too am waiting on a bug I have to be dropped so I can show I picked it up.
  24. You might want to check out this section called GPS In Education. One of the Moderators for this section might move this thread to assist you.
