  1. I never thought it was neat when my uncle would throw stuff up...but, whatever sinks your submarine
  2. Matt actually works for a government agency that is involved in emergency response/homeland security issues. Wearing his ID, and carrying a clipboard often insures that muggles give a wide berth.
  3. mekka mekka hey mekka hiney hiney ho!
  4. Like Sparky, my family has known for a long time that I am something of a dork/geek. I have grown out of some of my dorki/geeki-ness over the years. I still enjoy a good game of chess now and again, and still enjoy a good strategic first-person shooter on the ol' PC (Counterstrike, the Rainbow Six series, etc), but I have normalized in a lot of ways (still an avid reader, but no longer a steady diet of sci-fi, etc). I actually enjoy the outdoors and adventure/treasurehunting aspects of geocaching much more than the computer-based aspects. I have to spend enough time at work sitting in front of a PC. Sitting in front of one at home doesn't have the luster it once did. Julia, the wife, enjoys geocaching and encourages me to go as often as I can. She will go with me on micros and quick easy finds. She is not really into the elongated hikes and bushwhacking involved in finding some of them, though. She will gladly stand on the trail and yell encouragement to me, though.
  5. I sent an email to Mr. Turner expressing my displeasure with his actions. However, I must also take exception to your freewheeling connection between being a Christian and being an a***ole. The two, while not necessarily mutually exclusive (unfortunately), do NOT go hand in hand. I resent that implication.
  6. Wow...a "pilty" thread that is still alive. Just had to jump in here and be a part of it. No real story to tell. Actually, lots of stories but none I feel like relating at this time. I'm just amazed that he hasn't managed to get this one killed too.
  7. If you don't like them, don't hunt them. We enjoy both for different reasons...

    Cache Cans

Have a question. Any good tips on waterproofing a mortar tube? We won one as a door prize at the GA Geocachers Association Meeting this weekend. It looks like it will be a good container with some work. Was thinking about just wrapping it in waterproofing tape. Any other suggestions are very welcome, though.
  9. I had my first encounter with another geocacher a couple of days ago. I was after an FTF on a cache (got it, too ), and emerged from the woods to find a gentleman standing there holding a GPSr. If I had known he was there, honestly, I would have yelled to him to come in and join the fun. I am not into the "this cache is mine and mine alone while I am hunting it" mentality. It would have been fun to have another cacher with me.
  10. Only had one encounter with the police. I was actually looking for the way to the cache. The maps were not accurate in terms of the road I was looking for. The road was actually not near where the map showed it to be. I was roaming the area the map indicated and went down a side road that led to nowhere. I presume people probably go down this road to do lewd, nefarious, or just twisted things...one of the local cops saw me head down the road and decided to follow. The road just kinda ends in an undeveloped area and has no real turn-around. I was going to make the 3 point turn to get back out but noticed that the officer had pulled in behind me. I hopped out of my truck and walked up to the officer. She asked me what I was doing, I told her the truth. She thought it was cool, told me where the road I needed actually was and even gave me a shortcut to get there from where I was. Honesty with the police is always the most productive tactic.
  11. In defense of Sparky, I am a former firefighter/paramedic. The image didn't bother me. Truth be told, I have seen worse...It isn't pleasant, granted, but if you don't want to see it, don't go...if you've seen it without meaning to, I am sorry...When I was a new medic, an older medic who was one of my first partners passed something along to me that I used when I faced tough, scary, or horrifying calls. He told me, as long as it isn't you laying there, everything's cool. And, it's the truth.
  12. I live in the suburbs of Atlanta, but work in the city. I do most of my caching in the suburbs, because I am generally more familiar with the geography and also feel a bit safer out of the city. One weekend afternoon after work, though, i had some time to kill and decided to attempt one in some woods behind an elementary school around the corner from my workplace. I began to hike through the woods and encountered a raggedly dressed gentleman carrying 2 plastic grocery bags. He advised me that he had just returned from his grocery shopping and was going home. When he said home, he gestured toward an area off the trail where there appeared to be some sort of a lean-to constructed. I took a glance at his grocery bags and they each appeared to contain a large phone book and nothing more. He had this kind of glazed, "I'm crazy...but harmless" look to them. He tottered off toward his lean-to, and I took my leave of the area. I wasn't really afraid of him, but I didn't want to provoke him into becoming aggressive by staying in what he may perceive to be his "turf." I may return for that cache one day (with at least one other person), but for now am limiting my caching to the suburbs...and there are plenty outside of Atlanta...
  13. 6 weeks, void where prohibited I voided where prohibited once but only got 24 hours in lock-up...... 24 hours in lock-up can be a long time, though, eh boyo? Did ya get "passed around"? I can see the predatory glint in your cellmate's eyes now....mmmm...fresh meat...
  14. I just noticed Rover Green completed its mission of traveling from Oregon back to Georgia. That is quite a jaunt, too.
  15. Tom T Hall Lives...My one surviving grandmother is bedridden...no caching for her...I intend to cache as long as I can...II'm 34, so hopefully I have 40-50 years of it ahead of me
  16. I-Cache seems to be a good software package for this purpose. I just downloaded it and am in the process of putting all our previous finds into it. I will be putting all future finds in as well.
  17. Never really had a problem. Julia comes with me on some hunts. She likes micros and sometimes helps me think them through. However, the ones that involve hiking in the woods she will do, but only to a point. If it involves leaving the trail, bushwhacking, thorns, ticks, etc., she will usually wait on the trail and shout encouragement, or sit that trip out.
  18. Welcome to geocaching. And, yes, don't forget to log your find here. It's exciting to see someone new to the sport by accident who is so respectful of it!
  19. Do you also taste the white powder that spills out of your envelopes? Sorry...couldn't resist...
  20. Saw this thread yesterday...recognized it immediately as what it was (signs of a long ago misspent youth, I am afraid)...didn't have time to translate it until now. I live very far away so I doubt I will ever be finding this one, but it was a fun diversion on a slow day at work. Thanks!
  21. Well, we are still comparatively new to the sport (less than 100 fiinds), but I don't see myself letting it go anytime in the foreseeable future. I like the fact that it combines several of my passions: the outdoors, technology, and mental puzzles. I am actually proud of ourselves. We have a tendency to flit from hobby to hobby rather quickly. We've stuck with this for awhile. One nice thing about living in the Atlanta area is that weather is generally not too much of an issue.
  22. Thanks everybody...Yeah, we are planning a tribute cache in her memory...The part about it that is sticking in our craw is that it was so sudden there was no opportunity for us to say goodbye to her. No sense of closure on our part. We realize now that the night before she died, she took the time to say goodbye to us, but at the time we did not understand what she was doing. She knew she was dying, but was a stoic and did not share that truth with us. We went on a short errand Thursday morning and returned to find her dead in the back yard. It was a nice morning, so we left the dachshunds in the back yard (fenced). Dayzee, our younger dachshund, is a changed dog. She was always a rather annoying dog in a lot of respects. Pamela's death seems to have sobered her in the areas that we found annoying, so perhaps some good is coming out of the tragedy. The 3 chihuahuas are basically unfazed. The chihuahuas and dachshunds kind of existed as separate societies without a whole lot of interaction between them. There is kind of a power struggle going on right now between Nacho, our male chihuahua, and Dayzee, as we seek to integrate them all into one society.
  23. I have a couple of bear penises, but I would NEVER consider trading them. Just a quick question...I see your name is bigkodiak, so it would seem you must be a bear enthusiast, but what in the world are you doing with bear penises? Oh Well, i guess it is no weirder than walking around with a freshly spayed dog's uterus in your purse...Long story involving my mom...won't go into details here...
