  1. bingo. thanks ?The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.?---Matthew 13:44 Matt & Julia To view our online geocaching diary/blog, click here
  2. just tried it...let's see if this works. ?The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.?---Matthew 13:44 Matt & Julia To view our online geocaching diary/blog, click here
  3. We have set up a signature for ourselves in our account. However, the sig is not appearing in our messages. The "signature" box IS checked. The sig appears to be formatted properly. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas. Does one have to be a premium member to use a sig? Matt & Julia
  4. Agreed. Eye protection while geocaching, especially at night, is probably a must. Too many opportunities for stray tree branches and other things to give you an injury.
  5. This topic is a couple of weeks old, we realize, but we were looking back through the message forum and thought this was an interesting question. We live about 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, so there is no shortage of caches in our vicinity. However, our approach so far has been to do 1-2 at a time. We have yet to dedicate a whole day or even anything approaching a half day to caching. That way, we still have plenty of local caches to search for and we don't have to travel too far for now. I am sure our caching will pick up as time goes on. When the weather cools down in the fall, we will probably do longer excursions. Right now, it is just too fetched hot to stay out for too long...
  6. Well, I would say convince her to come along on a caching journey or two. More than likely, she will get hooked. It is a great activity for couples to do together (speaking as a married couple new to the sport). And, when it comes down to it, men love gadgets. You're being a guy. She'll understand...
  7. We've got a 2001 Ford Escape which is suiting our needs pretty nicely right now.
  8. Gotta say, you guys are such a source of cool information and useful websites. Have bookmarked so much stuff in the last several days. Hoping for a good day of caching tomorrow.
  9. Yeah, we believe it. Like TraderGordo, we are Christians, and do not believe in reincarnation as it applies to humans. However, what happens to the soul of an animal is never explained in the Bible. The theory we like is that a domesticated animal usually attaches itself to one person who is "theirs." The idea would be that that animal will seek their person out in various incarnations during their person's life. When their person dies, they will meet them in the afterlife. Kind of a neat story of our own. In late summer of 2001, we had a female cocker spaniel named Peewee come to stay with us as a houseguest. The situation changed and Peewee became a permanent member of our family. She was 13+ years old. April 4, 2002, Peewee died suddenly. We buried her on our property and have a nice little memorial. Well, seven weeks later, we acquired a sweet, adorable little female chihuahua puppy who we named Sierra. Sierra was born on April 4th. As she has grown up, she is displaying many of Peewee's traits, including a particular place that she likes to sleep, etc. I'm not saying for sure that Sierra is Peewee, but I am not saying that she isn't. Another cool fact involving the April 4th date: it was also the birthday of the male dachshund that Matt grew up with. Frodo died back in May of 1995 at the age of 15. Anyway, interesting and cool. 10. In all honesty, Matt heard about it some time back, but can'r precisely remember where or how. It had intrigued him for awhile, but not to the point of getting a GPSr and actually doing it until recently. We're glad we did, though. Matt & Julia
  11. quote:Originally posted by Shoebox:Your GPS will only get you to within 30' or 40'. After that you have to search for the hidden location. Often the cache can be found in hollow legs, under piles of brush or oddly stacked logs (and a thousand other sneaky spaces I haven't come across yet!). Hang in there, it gets easier in time. And welcome to the madness. All I know is if we ever find a leg, or God forbid, legs, hollow or not, I'm quitting...Sorry...couldn't resist... Matt & Julia
  12. Welcome, Ashtro. Very glad to have you joining us. There is one thread in particular that I will give you a link to. It was quite helpful to us (we're newbies too!), and I think it will be to you as well. It is the "what's in your pack" thread, which gives people's ideas as to what to bring with you on geocaching excursions. http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=2016058331&m=26760126 http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=2016058331&m=64360375 Good Stuff! 13. We are new to the game and curious... We have seen personalized wooden nickles left in the caches... where do you order them from? Thanks!
  14. Base-level Magellan SporTrak for us. Pretty new to the sport. It meets our needs for now. We'll probably upgrade at some point, but we are very happy. Matt & Julia
  15. Depending upon what sort of budget you are truly looking at, we have actually been very pleased so far with the base model Magellan SporTrak. Doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles, but definitely gets the job done.
  16. Magellan SporTrak base model. Brand new to the sport and no doubt will upgrade to a more powerful GPS at some point down the road. Enjoying what we have, though! Matt & Julia
  17. Also want to throw our support and congrats to GeoVet. We are brand new to the sport, but we already love it and look forward to many great experiences. The more young people that can be introduced to activities such as this, the better. Matt & Julia
  18. Our GPSr (Magellan SporTrak) arrived this morning from Amazon. We immediately set out to a location that we knew was close to our house and had our first geocaching experience. It was a relatively quick thing to get to the proper coordinates...Then, it was a matter of a little headscratching while we stumbled around looking for the clever place it was hidden. Finding it was a true rush for us. We're excited and happy and looking forward to finding our next cache! What a great activity for a married couple to do together. Matt & Julia
