  1. Another great topic. I hope to find some good caches deep into the woods when I go to Glacier on a backpacking trip this August.
  2. Thanks guys, I'll definitely put those on my to-do list!
  3. You know, growing up in WV in Charleston, I can tell you for a fact that the news stations would have a hayday with this stuff. Limiting the use of a recreational area that taxpayers paid for...
  4. I'm an avid outdoors man at heart and I love Geocaching. However, most of the caches in Central Ohio are too easy...you park, walk 250ft and find the cache. Anything rated a 3-4 just means you have to walk 1/4-1/2 mile. I'm looking for something bigger. Does anyone know of any backpacking caches in Ohio or Indiana? Or where the 5/5 caches are? I'm talking about caches that are 8 miles from the nearest road. They have to be reached by overnight camping, kayaking, etc. I'm not too much of a climber or a diver so those caches would be too much but would be good to know about. My friends out west did this cache in Missouri, this is what I'm talking about. Thanks!
  5. I'll be in Atlanta in a couple weeks and I want to get a few. I will probably try the ones listed, but are there anymore must do caches? Thanks a ton in advance to anyone who lists some more.
  6. Okay, let me expel some myths here. It's obvious that a lot of you guys are greenhorns. Since 1900 there have been 45 fatal bear attacks in North America Dogs kill 20 people per year. Dogs killed more people between 1979 and 1994 than bears did in 100 years. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00047723.htm Deer are responsible for 130 human deaths per year. http://www.marion.ohio-state.edu/SpiderWeb/Spider%20Bites.htm Between 1959 and 1994 Lightning has killed over 5,000 people. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/cae/svrwx/lightningdeaths.htm In the year 2000 lightning killed more people than bears have in 100 years. http://www.wxresearch.org/press/light2002.htm The biggest killer: Cars. In 2001 and 2002 over 43,000 people were killed in car accidents. http://www.womanmotorist.com/index.php/news/main/1864/event=view So really...what are you people afraid of? Bears don't want anything to do with people. You're more likely to die on your way to go geocaching in a car than you are to die from a bear in the backcountry...heck, you have a greater chance of being electrocuted by lightning than attacked, killed, or maimed by a bear. Again I ask, why are you people still afraid of bears? Start fearing what's more likely to kill you like a DEER or a car. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. Member Referrals

That's another good idea...the ability to track websites that refer people. So it could be a website or person...maybe we should add a few others like "Found first cache accidentally" Advertisement, etc. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. Member Referrals

I was thinking.... On the new user page, why not include a field "referred by"? This field could be used to track who referrs new geocachers to the website and sport. And what would be even neater...the ability to view your referral tree! Meaning, you can look at who you referred, and who they referred, and so on. Maybe even a reverse referral--the ability to look at who referred you to this site and who referred them, etc. I just think that would be very cool. PS...I didn't research the topic very well before posting, Markwell me if you must! ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 9. quote:Originally posted by stutzismydog:wvabackpacker~ Why cant you just purchase a second 24Mb SD card and load your 5th, 6th 7th & 8th region on to it then just change SD cards as needed ????? Because I have the SporTrak Pro which doesn't take SD cards. It has built in memory only. This is the official response from Magellan: quote:Our program is written to allow 4 regions of up to 16MB each to be loaded within the limits of the memory capacity of the unit. This is a limitation our engineering group has placed on the software. This is not a problem. It is a restriction placed on the program by the software engineer. Best regards. Brian Oliver Service Support Supervisor Pretty crappy. They actually built it in to do that, even though the unit could easily handle more than 4 regions. I spoke with Garmin today on the issue as well. They don't have the "problem." I will be selling my unit and purchasing an eTrex Vista. I liked this unit and I really like Magellan, but if they are going to "build in" problems intentionally then I'm not going to buy their products. I assume they did it this way so people with Meridian's and units that accept memory cards would be forced to buy more memory cards. Down with Magellan! ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 10. Yeah, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon are probably in the wrong spots. I just drew some boxes with the program quickly for illustration purposes. I called Garmin...they do not have this problem. I also called Magellan Technical support. They were quite rude. I believe the woman that answered was having lunch while she was talking to me. So much for Magellan. Anyone want to buy a lightly used SporTrak Pro? Make me an offer. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 11. Here is an example of what I want to do. Can a Garmin unit do this? I have Yosemite, CA, Yellowstone, WY, Badlands, SD, Grand Canyon, AZ, GSMNP, TN, and Everglades, FL selected. I need to upload all six areas. You are limited to only four user defined areas with the Magellan SporTrak series. As you can see the areas only take up 8mb leaving the GPS with 14mb free memory. The "regions" are too far from each other to combine. So I'm screwed. I can only upload four of the places I'll be visiting making the GPS useless for what I need it to do. If I had a Garmin, could I upload all of the regions in the picture above or is there a limit to the number of regions? ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. I'm just saying that we should remove all the warning labels from everything and let the problem take care of itself.
  12. Allow me to illustrate. In the picture below I have selected six "regions" that I will be visiting soon. They are Columbus, OH, Charleston, WV, Glady, WV, GSNP, NC, TN, Charlotte, NC, and Myrtle Beach, SC. If you look to the right hand side of the picture you will notice that I have all six regions selected and at the bottom of the box you see "upload limit." The six selected regions take up only 4910kb, which leaves me with 17506kb. However, notice the -2 rgns. I can only upload four of the regions I need. If I upload four, and then upload the other two--the previous four get overwritten. So there is no way to get all six regions I need into the GPS even though I have 17mb available. So here's what I did next.... I combined several of the regions. I put all the Ohio and WV regions together. Both NC locations together. Then I needed to add Saluda, SC with Myrtle Beach, SC so I combined them. Then I needed a small area above that region. I now have four regions that take up 22178kb, leaving me with 238kb--238kb that I could use for maps, however, I'd have to increase the size of one of the current regions to utilize it. Fortuneately most of the areas I will be visiting on this trip are close together, so I can group the regions. However, when I go out on my next trip I will be unable to group all the regions I'll be visiting, Yosemite, CA, Yellowstone, WY, Grand Canyon, AZ, GSMNP, TN, and Everglades, Fla. I can only upload topos for four of those areas. Do the Garmin's work the same way or could I upload all of those regions/areas? I hope this makes better sense. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. I'm just saying that we should remove all the warning labels from everything and let the problem take care of itself.
  13. So let me get this straight and clarify something. When I say "region" I mean an area, a square that I select from the nationwide map. Each square you select is called a region. The size doesn't matter as long as it doesn't go over 23mb. With the Magellan, I can upload 4 areas that are 4 megs a piece, 4 areas that 5 a piece, 3 areas that are 7mb a piece, or 1 area that is 23mb, etc...so long as I don't upload more than 4 areas or more than 23mb. The size of the regions doesn't matter, so long as I don't select more than 4. I'm assuming from what you have said, that with a garmin I can define several "areas". Say I want to upload detailed topos for Yellowstone, GSMNP, the Grand Canyon, the Badlands, and the Ozakrs....each would be in different regions, or areas....I can upload all of them so long as they don't take up more memory than the unit I am using has. With a SporTrak, I would be limited to uploading just 4 of the above areas...I couldn't download all six at once or ever. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 14. Lemme tell you how mad I am.... I had a Magellan GPS Tracker. It was big, clunky, and pretty accurate. After I introduced my friend to Geocaching he went out and bought a SporTrak Pro...then realized he didn't need that much power. He offered me to trade GPS's if I'd give him $100 in addition to my GPS. I couldn't pass up the deal. Well, I just got Mapsend not to long ago and I uploaded a couple regions and loved the detail. I just got done planning a trip south to several different cities and parks... Much to my surprise, when I tried to upload 6 new regions, it rejected them!. So I thought, "oh, only four at at time." WRONG. It only lets you upload 4 regions period. It overwrites the regions on the GPS and they can't be renamed with the SporTrak. So, to my knowledge, there is no way around the 4 region limit. I am utterly pissed off. I needed to upload several different cities and parks. By selecting huge regions I got most of them, however, I have to leave out part of my destinations due to lack of memory and I get a lot of useless junk in with my regions. My question:...With a Garmin unit (and the Mapsource software), would I be restricted to 4, 5, 6, etc. regions? Or can I upload as many regions as my heart desires so long as my GPS memory can hold them all? As a backpacker I often go several weeks without seeing a computer. So uploading four regions makes the unit pretty much useless to me. I need a unit that can accept more than 4 regions. Most of the regions I need are small, but require me to upload 6-10 regions. Instead I am forced to upload 1 huge region containing a lot of data I don't need. Are the Garmin's like this? Does Magellan plan to fix this problem? I am a very unsatisfied customer right now. The SporTrak series was supposed to be designed with the outdoorsman in mind, however, if you are outdoors more than you are indoors, and don't have access to a computer to upload new regions, Mapsend software is useless. I have been, up to this point, very satisfied with the unit. It is very accurate, easy to use, and can get a signal in dense forest. However, this Mapsend problem almost makes the unit useless for my purposes. If I can upload more with Mapsource to a Garmin then this unit will probably find itself on eBay really soon.... ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 15. I didn't see a thread dedicated to caches near waterfalls or caches that require you to pass by a waterfall so I decided to start one! The second cache I ever went looking for held a big surprise for me (and it wasn't the cache that held the surprise). It required that I park off of Hayden Run Rd., a road that I have driven on 100's of times. Then to reach the cache you had to walk down to the river and then follow a creek. After walking about 100 yards I came around a bend in the creek and BAM! There it was! A huge, gorgeous waterfall--hidden in the heart of the city (well, not exactly the heart but within the inner belt of the city's interstate). I couldn't believe it. How many times had I driven past this waterfall and not known it was there, hiding, waiting for me to discover it? If I wasn't a geocacher, I might have never found this waterfall. So, I dedicate this thread to sharing pictures of waterfalls near caches. Share your pictures and your stories! Here is mine: http://jeremy.qn.net/geocaching/waterfall.htm ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 16. VMG--velocity made good. It gives you a number which is the portion of your speed which is actually helping you reach your goal. For instance, if your speed is 50mph, your VMG might be 45mph, meaning that you're close to the course you should be steering and 45mph of the 50mph is the speed that is good towards your goal. The other 5mph isn't helping since you are off course (well, it actually does help since the higher your real speed the higher the VMG). Such a statistic helps with other stats such as ETA. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 17. Anyway you could give us the waypoint names? and list why? ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. I'm just saying that we should remove all the warning labels from everything and let the problem take care of itself.
  18. The SporTrak does have an average speed option. It's quite useless though as the average person walks 2-3.5mph. Might be useful on your drive over? I find that the VMG function is pretty worthwhile. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 19. No checkbox for downloading to EasyGPS I really miss the checkbox options for downloading waypoints from the search page. Luckily, I downloaded all 625 waypoints within 100 miles of me before the feature was disabled. It was so much easier when the checkbox was available. Then I could decide which cache's to hit. First I would look at them all laid out on a map, then I would get their papers I already printed, hop over to the search page and download the waypoints for the day. Guess it doesn't make too much of a difference since I have them downloaded already...but for the original bulk download it made a huge difference. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 20. After a quick search of the midwest forum I found no topics with information on the best caches in central Ohio. So I've started one. And when I say "best caches" I am actually referring to the best cache locations. So far my favorite is: Gee, I didn't know this was here! (GC3FC1) ***** Nerdy Smurf Cache (GC2BBF) ****1/2 Down by the Station (GCE317) ***1/2 Time Flies Cache (GCEADC) ***1/2 The first cache is a beautiful waterfall hidden in suburbia. The second takes you through the Columbus Park of Roses, which is in bloom right now. The third and fourth were just really nice parks, the station being a great place to take your kids if you have any. I gave each cache a star rating from 1/2 to 5 stars. So, what other caches in the area are in great locations or deserve to be called a "best cache." ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 21. You know, I had never seen one of those spiders until Memorial Day weekend. Then as I entered my tent on a backpacking outing one fell from the ceiling of my tent onto my lap. I chased it out of my tent using a bottle. The little sucker is fast and it can leap. The camping spot we chose was a damp decidious forest near two streams. I found out after the trip that it was a brown recluse. I have the same picture on my website in the trip report http://jeremy.qn.net/vesuvius.htm I'm glad it didn't bite me... ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 22. I'm pretty new to the forums, been geocaching with a friend for a long time, just got my own account not too long ago. I spend quite a bit of time reading on the forum and I haven't noticed any attacks that would cause a new member to leave. It's cyberspace dude, who cares what people say about you? Chances are you'll never meet them. And when you argue back with people or defend yourself you just make it worse. Best thing to do is ignore them. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 23. I disagree as well. Geocaching should not be permitted in National Parks. Parks such as Yellowstone have a very fragile ecosystem and many geocachers do not follow the principles of LNT. National Parks are the last place we have in this country where you can go and find no signs of man or technology. Heck, in some of them you can't even get a cell phone signal because they won't let them build towers in the park. National parks only take up a small amount of land. There are millions of acres that are not on NP lands for you to geocache on. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world. 24. This link will be the most useful link for information on GPS reception, features, reliability, etc. http://gpsinformation.net/ These guys pretty much take apart the GPS and test everything AND they stay in contact with the GPS engineers who designed the units and compare data. In other words, that is where you will find FACTS to look over yourself. ________________________ I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people in the world.
