  1. I have scanned the thread and did not see it mentioned, but the hand cleaners mechanics use (Gojo or Mojo??) works well too. It is a degreaser and cuts the oils. One of our local geocachers told me about this and we carry it in the car or truck. When we get back to the vehicle after we think we have been exposed, we use the hand cleaner and paper towels. So far, so good.
  2. My wife and I cache together a lot. We enjoy the clever hides and the places geocaching has taken us that we would not otherwise have seen, like parks and historical areas. I think it is a combination of the thrill of the hunt and the adventure. We have seen some really pretty places because of caching and I thank the CO's for that.
  3. My wife and I found a couple of these out in AZ. The one I remember best had some magnets in the tape and it stayed flush with the box it was on. In fact, the container and surrounding area had been freshly painted so it blended in perfectly. It was really hard to spot as it was only about an eighth of an inch thick when on the box. It seemed to be holding up really well, but it is dry out there. I don't know how moisture would affect the container.
  4. I think I need to hang out with Knowschad. He finds better swag than I do! Actually, my prized possessions are some shiny new gold dollar coin left for the FTF's.
  5. I use Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (GSAK). Write a pocket query and download it to GSAK. GSAK will create a file to transfer to your Garmin. Easy.....
  6. CC, We are planning on being there. We had a very active and dedicated scout master when I was growing up. I did not appreciate the time and effort the adult leaders put in until I became an adult. They gave up all their vacation to take us to camp every summer. They hauled us to Canada, Colorado and Florida among other places just because they cared. I have a deep appreciation and respect for that now I wish I had then.
  7. Eagle here. June 1970 with 20 other Eagles. Troop 584, Longhorn Council at one time had the record for most Eagles in one court of honor.
  8. Mine ran and I can preview them, but I have not gotten them via e-mail yet. I'm not feeling the PQ love today!!
  9. See if someone you know has found it before you and ask for a hint from that person.
  10. It really makes you appreciate the cache owners who read the logs or respond to the messages and take appropriate actions even that much more. I have sent messages to CO's before and had them take time to thank me for letting them know what the issues are. I have also been ignored, but I appreciate the CO's replying to me.
  11. I say you quit when you get 761,689 finds. Oh wait, that number grows every day. I think there is no answer to the question.
  12. And what do I do if she says she would prefer jewelry? Thank you all for your suggestions and comments. I'll be shopping around...... Happy caching all!
  13. Share? But its MY GPS! I really am hoping that if she has her own GPS she will do some caching on her own or with some of our new found friends. Of course, the competitive side of me says give her an old GPS with no batteries! Obviously, I am kidding. Maybe I am looking for an excuse to upgrade (but don't tell my wife)!
  14. My wife has been caching with me and uses her iPhone. She can get close, but not as close as with my Garmin 60CSx. She is feeling deprived, so I am thinking about buying her own GPS. My question is should I get the same unit as I have or get something different? By getting the same or very near the same, I can use the same map software and I already know how to use it. But then again, I don't want to miss out on an opportunity to upgrade. Thoughts?
  15. This thread has made me think about what I don't have. My wife is alergic to fire ants, so we need her epi-pen. There is a whole list of things I need to add beyond the bandaids I have. Thanks for the serious posts and even then tongue in cheek posts. They all made me think back on my BSA training.....be prepared!
  16. This is GREAT!! Thanks for the post. My wife and I have found the oldest caches in Texas and Arizona. Kansas, here we come!!!
  17. What is the oldest active cache in the US? We found GC57 - Geocache, placed 09/09/00 and wonder where the oldest one is. Anybody know where it is or how to find it?
  18. I have looked at the glossary and lexicon, but did not see one I am looking for. I read a HINT that said "WOL". Any suggestions on what that means?
  19. Get someone like they have on some of the quiz shows "call a friend" so you can call and have them find you some more. I am in Missouri and have been known to call my brother in south Texas to look something up on Groundspeak for me. Funny you say "call a friend". I called my wife yesterday to help me on a cache. Her first response when I asked if she was at the computer was "are you out caching?" Busted!! Guilty as charged! She uses her iPhone to find new caches or look up the hints. It has come in handy on more than one occasion. thanks again to everybody for your responses. You are most helpful.
  20. Thanks for all the replies. I have learned a lot. I have not loaded that many caches in my 60CSx, but will. I work 50 miles from home, so I cache at work on my lunch break and cache on the way home, if I have time. I think what I will do is load a lot of caches for both locals and supplement that with notes in my little black book. I think what a lot have said is they use a combo of technology, memory and paper notes. That is basically what I have been doing, but have not loaded enough caches in my GPS. I am learning! Thanks again for the replies and happy caching everybody!!
  21. I did a search and it did not find any results, so here goes. When you folks are caching for a day and find several caches, how do you keep track of them during the day? Do you carry a log with you? Do keep up with them in your GPS? How do you keep from getting confused on which cache you found so you can log them when you get to your computer? Along that lines, do you set out with a specific list of caches you are going after when you start the hunt? What happens when you find everything you had on your list and there is still time left to hunt? these may be silly questions or may be posted in the wrong spot, but I am curious! Thanks in advance
  22. I feel the click, but nothing happens. I am so deaf I cannot hear the beep! Oh well, a new one will be here in a few days and we'll see how I do. It didn't used to be this way, so I think something has changed. Maybe not!! Thanks for your help.
  23. To follow up....I contacted Garmin Tech support and described my problems. We tried a re-boot on the unit thinking perhaps it was a software issue. The unit did not respond, so Garmin is shipping me a new replacement unit. (of course, I have to pay for it and then get a credit back on the charge card). In any case, Garmin is replacing the unit which is less than 90 days old.
