  1. No such thing as cheap in 2022 especially in terms of smartphones. Android unlocked phones from Amazon or from China sites like Aliexpress are your best choice if you want the least expensive. Buying an old Android Tablet might be also a good option. I don't think anyone has done any reviews on actual GPS accuracy when it comes to smartphones. Eventually though, you won't be able to update to the latest Google maps because it won't support older system software. All this comes down to price. Additionally, you need to know the LTE and 5G bands the phone you buy uses. You might end up on 3G or no data connectivity instead, lol.
  2. Is 4.0 still the latest?
  3. Can you change the name without any problem to gmapprom from gmapsupp ?
  4. Does anyone know if this is true: I read that you can only buy/use preloaded maps for this unit. You can't download your waypoints or your City Navigator NT maps onto the microSD card?
  5. Thanks for sharing. However, I would never buy any new electronics from Ebay since it has no warranty from the manufacturer and considering all the knock-off products from China, you never know what you're getting. True, the Ebay seller may have a positive rating but that's kinda skewed and thankfully, Ebay is trying to change that. After a certain period of time you can't change your feedback given to a particular seller.
  6. How would you find the card ID on the Garmin handhelds? Is it in the diagnostic mode?
  7. Actually, it does. The maximum size is 2GB and < 2025 map segments in all of their handhelds.
  8. There were some '"filter"issues with the H line last year when they came out. Have they been resolved with the latest firmware? How's the new chipset compared to the SiRFIII?
  9. Fear of the unknown for one and the possiblity or liklihood that Nokia will be charging Garmin a lot more for the maps (they have to get their money back somehow).
  10. Not so sure this will be good for Garmin or the rest of us for that matter. From another site: Rob Sanderson of American Technology Research said Monday that while there is "little to no chance" that Nokia would prevent access to Navteq's maps, the double-digit price declines that have benefited Garmin are likely over. "Also, this deal shows Nokia is moving aggressively into navigation on phones and other devices," Sanderson said in an interview. "This is a competitive threat to Garmin."
  11. I think we need to step back a bit, like previously mentioned we need to determine which unit is more accurate. Maybe the new HCx is more accurate?
  12. I read somewhere here that you can't hear it beep. The odometer tracking issue has been improved but from the update it doesn't look like it is totally fixed as Garmin wrote that they "Changed odometer calculation to more closely match track log distance. " But, unless I am missing something, it doesn't match the track log exactly.
  13. Totally agree. That's why the Nuvi 7xx is on my Xmas wish list for next year. By then it will be on clearance. Just need something to get by with a larger screen then the old B&W Etrex Legend that I use now.
  14. Thanks, looks like the WAAS issue and maybe the Odometer issue (< 2 mph) is not fixed yet.
  15. It sure is...that, the smaller display, Odometer, and WAAS issues are the reasons why I am not getting the Vista HCX.
  16. A few years ago you were able to buy an unlocked map, very small in size of the Mayan Riveriera regions but the supplier no longer carries the old maps just the newer one that does auto routing and also requires an unlock code. Does anyone know who or where I can get the map for my Etrex Legend?
  17. If not mistaken, the HCx doesn't beep like the 60CSx
  18. I think I am going to get the 60CSX. Just not sure when. I have seen the screen size of the 60 and HCX and for me in the car, the larger screen of the 60 is what I need. I really hate the small screen of my Etrex Legend so I need this to be a worthwhile upgrade with a screen that I can quickly glance at and see as much info as possible. I never really had a problem with brightness with my Etrex Legend. I have grown accustomed to the joystick of the Etrex but I do need the beeps or voice guidance for road trips. I must say that I don't like the fact that 60CSX is now old and still pricey. I am not so sure Garmin will be using the new chipset in any new models of the 60CSX. They just launched the Nuvi 7xx series and they are still using SIRFIII. However, the antenna is now internal as opposed to external.
  19. No offense, but I believe this to be a misleading statement. Perhaps I am interpreting your statement incorrectly? At any rate, I am going to oversimplify things and keep it basic, but will hopefully explain and differentiate my understanding of the GPS concept. GPS positioning works based upon the concept of triangulation - solving an equation for one unknown position (you with your GPSr in hand) by receiving, interpreting, and correcting a series of known positions (the GPS satellites). The satellites transmit their positioning information via the almanac data, along with a DoD maintained atomic time stamp and a "pseudo random code" to identify one satellite from another. Your GPSr obviously receives this known positioning information. Since it knows where the satellites are (almanac data), what time the positioning information was sent (atomic clock synchronization), which satellite it came from (pseudo random code) - and how long it took to receive this information, it can then calculate and display your position and movement. Your unknown and variable position is computed upon this series of known satellite positions, rather than the Doppler shift effect of a given signal; the positions and signals are essentially fixed, you aren't. Once a satellite "lock" is achieved, your position is known and updates are then calculated depending on GPS settings (ie, "battery saver" mode calculates your position less often). The known satellite positioning data is always there for interpretation. I don't believe this concept should be confused with Doppler shift, which is based upon a frequency change of a given signal as the source or observer moves in relation to the other; rather GPS uses known exact positions and a continuously broadcast (and corrected) signal without frequency change. Best, WERA172 Looking at the comparison track data between the 60 and Vista HCx I see a difference between the two so it appears to me that there may be more than just a speed filter problem. Hopefully it is software related and not related to the chipset: http://www.naviboard.de/vb/showthread.php?t=21730
  20. Thanks gallet, I must've got confused on the specs on GArmin's site. I also noticed on Google Earth that the addresess or house numbers are not always accurate either. I think Google EArth in general isn't that accurate. I know I read one review comparing the accuracy of their HCx unit on Google EArth which I would say is not an accurate representation. I think Garmin Mapsource should be used for comparison purposes.
  21. I just noticed something. Is the deviation on Google Earth standard? On Google Earth the HCx is closer to the road than the 76Csx but I know first hand that using my Etrex Legend the tracks are quite accurate when I uploaded them to Mapsource compared to Google Earth. In GE the track is further away, so I am more inclined to believe the accuracy of the 60/76 is better.
  22. Agreed. Newb888 - I don't know where you live, but I just did an in-situ test on these two units last week. I checked around here (NC), and the only retailer I found that had both units in stock was REI. Not only did they have both units in the same display case, they also had batteries in them. I was impressed! Check the link and see if there's an REI in your area - seeing these units side-by-side is a worthwhile proposition; the improved/brighter display on the HCx units is easily seen. Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, no location in Canada. But, yes the brighter display is clearly noticable and great battery life is impressive. The MediaTEK chipset is quite energy efficient.
