  1. I have a teenage daughter that is limited to 200 mb per month. She gets very close every month and has exceeded it only once in the past 12 months. Her main use is pandora music and Facebook. It's the music that racks up the usage for her.

I have AT&T and they send out a message to me and her when she is at about 90% of her allotted usage. When she gets that message she really cuts back because she knows she has to pay for the overage.

  2. I can't find any other way than deleting manually each and every marker from my downloaded PQ. I'm not working in the area I generated the PQ for, and want to erase them from my units memory to free room for others. Anyone else use this unit and have any suggestions other than taking the time to delete 900+ caches and waypoints by hand???

Go to Find/Geocaches/Hit Menu and it gives you the option to delete all.

The better way is what jholly recommended. This method will not remove the hidden waypoints like parking spots, trail heads, and other things that might have been downloaded when you ran your PQ.

  3. After a long day working things out - I have come to a successful conclusion.

    1. My primary Geocaching tool is my Garmin Vista HCx, this is because I think its very accurate and robust but most of all because it has excellent battery life (25 hrs plus on 2 x AA NiMH rechargeable). BUT I can only get 30 characters worth of Notes with each geocache on this device - just about enough for the hint (and definately not any description or recent logs etc).

    2. My secondary geocaching tool is now my Android HTC Desire phone (that I would normally always have with me anyway. Using a free opensource android app called C:geo I can store all the data from .gpx files generated by my PQs and look at the full page notes, hints and logs if I need to because method 1 is not working, and if I wanted to do a quick cache and dash I could just use my phone. My phone is mainly my secondary tool because with GPS on it has a battery life of just a few hours.

I am now a very happy Geocacher. Hope this helps anyone else starting out.

This is how I do it with my 60CSX and an iPhone.

  4. You can do all of the aforementioned ways to load caches/waypoints onto the CSX. GSAK and EasyGPS just convert a PQ and then within these programs you further filter out what it is you exactly want to send to your GPS. You could also utilize Garmin's mapsource to do it also. You may need to download the most recent plugin for your device though.

  5. Not sure about the 62's, as I don't own one but I do have a 60csx and a PN-40. The CSX hasn't had any problems with button wear after a couple years but the PN-40 has some after 1 year and not that many outings. I keep it in a case and noticed that when I put it into the case with the buttons facing forward all was good but when I put it in with the buttons facing the back of the case, the buttons were starting to wear funny. I then inspected the case and noticed a hard spot where the clip attachment is located on the back that rubs the device's buttons and starts to prematurely wear them out. I now make sure I always put the PN-40 into the case with the buttons facing forward and I have not noticed any new wear on them.

  6. I cache with my daughters sometimes and I can see how a log sheet can have fewer names than the number of logs online because when we sign the log, we sign it as T3D or Team3D. It stands for Dad, Daughters, and Dog because we usually have our Golden Retriever with us.

When we get back home to log online, we will each use our individual name (Except for the dog) and will put in the log that we signed the paper log as T3D or Team3D.

  7. Had a similar thing happen to me recently. I received a message that a seller on Amazon.com was selling the Garmin Oregon 550T for $163.00. I purchased two and received 2 Garmin FR60 watches. I contacted the seller and they said the same thing, "Somehow the item number came up different on the Amazon site."

I had to go through the whole process of returning the item, what a pain.

  8. Whatever maps you get on a used unit will be usable. Its not like you have to log into the unit to use it. Its not going to lock you out. One of the great things about Garmin units are the great number of free maps you can get for them. Check GPSFileDepot for maps of your area.

Thats great news. I have seen on ebay auctions the owner says the buyer will have to reregister the gps and the maps will have to be repurchased. I wasn't sure why they were saying that. They specific maps were the Garmin Topo and City Navigator maps.

If a map has been registered to a specific unit, then that map is locked to that unit and the seller should be selling you the Disks with the unit. This would be for software like City Navigator.

There is some software out there, like the Garmin Topo software, that is not locked to one specific unit and sellers will sometimes sell you a unit with a specific map-set installed on it for your area.

The main point I want to stress to you is to be careful if you are buying used software that has been previously registered to a different unit. This software will require you to purchase a new unlock code to access it. This unlock code, from what I have heard, is as expensive as the software to begin with. It would be better for you to purchase the most current version with the code intact.

  9. I have a 305 and love it. The only thing I don't like about it is the way it is set up to sit on your wrist. The curve on the unit makes it hard to see with just a quick twist of the wrist. I have to turn my wrist and move my arm to view the screen. Beyond that small issue, it keeps excellent records.

Tracks my speed, hr, distance, and my track/route that I ran. I even loaded a few caches in it to look for on a couple of my runs and all was good.

  10. Do not use Vaseline, it is a petroleum product and petroleum products will deteriorate rubber products. Use a silicone gel or go to your pool store and purchase their gasket gel. I use it on my pool filters with no problems.

You can get new o rings from your hardware store. Bring in the matchstick holder and purchase a few nice thick ones that just fit onto the holder. This will guarantee that they do not fall off. Also add the rubber protector gel to it and all should be good.

  11. I personally would have logged a DNF mentioning the what I had found at GZ. I then would have posted a NM log stating the same thing. I have seen many CO's contact a cacher when this has happened and informed them that they could log this cache as a find if they wanted to because they found the cache contents but not a cache.

I had a cacher one time place a replacement cache right next to the cache he couldn't find and I let his log stay. It was his third time to the cache site and he couldn't find it so he thought it must have been missing.

Do what you think is right, you are the cache owner.

  12. ... at the core of this game is the fundamental philosohy of, "To log a cache as found, you must first find it (not a proxy) and sign the log." You do not have to log your find at GC.com but you can if you would like. What is so hard about this?

    You made that up.

Yes, I made this up from my own personal thoughts of how this game is supposed to be played. I changed the wording so that it shows that this belief is not a rule but a perception and or belief of mine which leads into the first part of my quote that you happened to leave out.

I understand that this game is set up to allow people to play it as they seem fit to do so
  13. I find it funny that one poster stated that without these competitions the people wouldn't come. Yet on the website for the event there is a poll asking why you came. The number one response was for the "fellowship" at 40.6%, the second was for the "caches" at 35.7%, and a distant third was for the "competitions" at 12.7%.

  14. Would an individual be able to claim a visit to this or any event because they had intentions to attend? What about a CITO event that someone wants to attend but can't, yet they go out and pick up garbage in their neighborhood. Can they log an attended to the CITO event? What about puzzle caches where someone has solved the puzzle but does not want to go to GZ. Can they email a cache owner of the puzzle cache with the solved coordinates and ask them if they can just claim the find without actually visiting the cache site? They have done most of the work in solving the puzzle therefore they should be allowed to log the cache as found, no need to actually visit the site. Is this where people think the game should go? I can now understand why people no longer log their finds or hide caches, they just don't want to deal with the drama.

I think the idea of having a competition to find these "proxy" caches is good and would be fun for those that choose to do it. It is also nice to have legitimate caches for those to find that do not want to participate in the competition and just want to do their own thing. There is no problem with friendly competition but the prize should not be the ability to actually log these "proxy" caches as legitimate finds because they are not actual finds. Continue to give awards, badges, certificates, and prizes for those that complete the event with the most finds, the fastest completed time, or whatever but to allow people to claim that they have done something they actually did not do is not the solution.

I understand that this game is set up to allow people to play it as they seem fit to do so but at the core of this game is the fundamental guideline of, "To log a cache as found, you must first find it (not a proxy) and sign the log." You do not have to log your find at GC.com but you can if you would like. What is so hard about this?

  15. Were you using the GC.com app or were you on Safari? I have never had an issue using Safari to access the GC.com website to log an owner maintenance and I have never tried to do it from the App. Were you logged in? It might have thought you were a regular cacher and didn't give you the owner options.

Edit to add: Just checked one of my caches on the App and it listed all of the options for me.

  16. The eaiest way to do this is to create individual "tracks" of your walk. You can then download that information from your unit directly to mapsource or possibly basecamp, but I am not familiar with this software.

To record a track, which will also give you a picture trail of your walk, do the following:

Select menu twice> scroll to track and hit enter> turn on the track option

Now go on your walk and do whatever you want. When done, very important here, go back to the track screen and turn it off and save thet track. Now go home and and hook the GPSr to the computer and transfer the information into mapsource and save that information as something like, "My hikes" or Geocaching days". You can save all of your tracks onto this map you have saved and it will list every track you have made.

Once the info has been stored onto mapsource, you can now clear them from your unit. You can also, if you want, resend those tracks to your unit if you found a cool loop that you want to do again and you can follow it from your unit.

Hope this helps and solves your issue.

  17. Sorry to read your post and I do hope your daughter starts to enjoy the game again. I'm the dad of two girls ages 12 and 14. We started when they were 9 and 11 and the thought of what happened to you never crossed my mind.

There is both good and bad in your story though. It is good that there are people that are concerned enough to call the police in what they perceived as a suspicious situation. It would have been better if they had approached you and asked what was going on and then you could have had the opportunity to explain geocaching to them. The bad is what you, your daughter, and your family went through for this innocent adventure.

I am not going to change my caching trips with my daughters and I would not let this deter me from caching. Just use this event to explain to your daughter that it is good to see that people are concerned about others but there are better ways to address these issues.

Just think, when you and your daughter are older you will have a great story to tell about this misadventure.
