  1. I also have revisited for the same reasons mentioned. I also go back to a lot of the caches I have already found with my two daughters. They usually can only go out during the weekends and I can go out most anytime. So I have found many caches in my area twice but have only logged them once, the first time I found them.
  2. Hello, All is ok now. I just "grabbed it from another location" and will move it along soon. There was another TB in the cache that was put there at the same time so at least it had a friend for the last year. This post can end. Thanks
  3. Hello, I just visited a cache and retrieved 2 TB's from it. When I got home to log them the cache page only showed one TB in it. I entered the TB# of the one that was not listed on the cache page and it shows the TB was placed into the cache on 9/30/07 but my only options for logging the TB are: 1) Grab it from somewhere else 2) Write note 3) Discovered I have emailed the person that placed the TB in the cache to see if they can modify or edit their listing to correct the issue. Has this ever happened before and is there something I can do? Thanks.
  4. Are you referring to an actual topo map with the N/W lines on it?
  5. You can also look a ebay and some of the stores that are listed at geocaching.com to get ideas of what some of these micro caches look like. That's what I did and it has helped me locate them a little better. But just the other day I was the only one to log a DNF on a large cache. I just couldn't see it. I gotta go back and find it now because other people have found since I logged.
  6. I do use the auto routing feature on mine because I currently do not have a car GPS.
  7. When I was looking for a GPS unit the most important feature for me was connectivity to my computer. I do not have a serial port and had read that the serial to USB adapters work around 60% of the time, not very reassuring to me. So I focused on models that utilized USB cables. Those models were: Venture CX or HC Legend C, CX, or HCX Summit HC Vista C, CX, or HCX 60 C, CS, CX, CSX 76 C, CX, CSX I then looked for features that were important to me. I ended up purchasing the 60 CSX. If I were to buy again, I probably would go for either the Legend HCX or Vista HCX. I did purchase my daughters the Venture CX and they have had no problems with it.
  8. When I started, the micros were killing me. Someone suggested I look at ebay, under geocaching, and to look at the stores that are listed on geocaching.com to see what these micros look like. It doesn't show you where they are hidden but it gives you an idea of what to look for.
  9. All you need is a usb to usb mini cable. It is just like most cell phone and camera cables that attach to the computer. You can get them pretty cheap from ebay or radio shack. My motorola cell phone utilizes the same cable.
  10. I have a 60csx. You are in the auto routing feature for following the road. First question I have is, "Did you buy any mapping software with the GPS? If so, which software? The unit comes preloaded with a base map that is, well, basic. If you bought Topo, it does not have the auto routing feature to follow roads so you should turn off that feature. If you bought City Navigator, than you do have auto routing. Use this feature to get you to the cache area, if you are driving there. Once you get close to the area you must "recalculate" your routing to off road by: 1) Being on the map page 2) hitting the menu button 3) Scrolling down to recalculate and selecting that feature 4) choose off road 5) you are now on your way. Now, if you don't have any maps installed here is how you turn the auto routing feature off or change it to where it asks you if you want to follow road or off road. 1) hit the menu button 2x's to get to the menu screen 2) scroll to the "set up" option, it looks like a wrench, and hit enter 3) scroll to the "routing" option and jit enter 4) Under "Guidance method" hit enter and then choose either "prompted" (which I use because I have both TOPO and Navigator) or "off road" This should solve your problem with the routing and caclulating. The backlight feature is something you are going to have to live with. All the 60csx's do that. It's a power saving feature. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions just hit my profile and email me. ao318
  11. My wife also has no interest in caching but is very supportive of my caching. She will even comment when I haven't been out for a while. She doesn't mind making stops on the way to somewhere for a quick grab and she also likes to come up with ideas for swag and containers. Everyone has different interests. She likes to hear about my day. She especially looks forward to the days when I take our two daughters, ages 12 and 9, out of the house for several hours. It enables her to get thngs done around the house and sometimes to just veg out. There are many other things that we do as a family this is just not one of them which is ok with me.
  12. I have put a few fire department challenge coins into my caches as FTF prizes. They are not GC coins or TB's, just nice coins coins for people to keep or do whatever they want with. If there are no numbers and no note describing what the goal of the coin is than it is yours to do with as you please.
  13. Have you turned off your sleep function on the computer? Sometimes if you are installing something and the computer goes into energy saving or sleep mode it will stop the process of the software update. Go into your settings and turn off the the sleep feature. I have experience in this when I have tried to charge my ipod and the computer hoes to sleep it stops charging and takes forever to fully charge. Hope this helps....
  14. I have 2008 NT and it took about 12 minutes for the state of California to download into my 60csx.
  15. I installed all of California Topo and NT on my 60csx and it took about 8 minutes.....

    How?

If you are a premium member you can create pocket queries of caches in certain areas and then use a program like GSAK, Garmins mapsource, or some other program to put them onto your GPS via a USB cable. If you are not a member, than you can download up to 20 caches at a time by use the find cache feature and having them list the caches in order by distance from where you made your home point from. There is a button on the buttom of the page that the previous poster referred to. Press this and it will download 20 geocaches and then you can open them with mapsource and then place onto your GPS from there.
  17. I have the 60csx and have Topo 2008. It gives you a more accurate view of maps as you are walking or driving. There are free download maps for your GPS if you search the forums. Type in Free Maps in the search window and it should list some forum links with the information.
  18. A lot of times people will have bookmarked, and made available to other viewers, caches like you are asking for. It is usually located in a box on the lower right hand side of a cache listing. It will say something like, "Bob's favorite night caches". Just click on that link and it will list a bunchof night caches in the area...
  19. http://gsak.net/ Here is the link....
  20. I bought my kids each the Venture CX. They like it and have had no problems finding caches. I also have the 60csx and they don't cache without me. We also are not in an area that has poor reception so the high sensitivity receiver wasn't that important to us. My kids are 9 and 12.
  21. I haven't hid that many caches yet but I don't go out and verify if someone actually found it. If someone wants to log a find without actually going there than fine, I don't care. If they do that than they are missing out on the fun of walking along the American River here in Sacramento and seeing the animals, birds, trees, etc. Let those that want to log a find do it, it's not about the numbers to me. For me it's about getting out with my kids and my geo golden retriever and having a nice afternoon together or sometimes just some me time by myself when I get off of work in the morning before I go home. I personally don't like the short "found it, thanks." postings. I like to read what people have to say about their day, how hard or easy the find was, if their were problems, and things like that. I occasionally check my caches to make sure they are intact, clean, in the correct location, and if the log is ok. I read the names but I do not compare the names. That just takes too much time. In fact I have seen names on my logs that haven't posted finds on GC.com. My concern would be that if I start to remove a log or post notes back and forth this individual might become vindictive and actually visit my cache and destroy it. I also don't want to waste my time and energy in constantly deleting posts, sending emails, and arguing back and forth with notes. I don't know, that's just me.
  22. I also have a 60csx and a venture cx as my back up. I like the button layout on the 60csx better. I keep forgetting which button does what on the venture but again it is my back up and I don't use it all that often.
  23. I also own a 60csx and have never had any problems with what you are dealing with. I do have topo and North america NT. Topo doesn't list as many names on streets as the NT but it is very accurate for me. If you do load new maps onto your unit frequently you erase the old ones you already had on it. Whenever you load new maps onto the unit, you need to install the old ones at the same time. An example for me is hsve Sacramento county north and south on my unit and I am going to a neighboring county and need to install those maps on my unit I need to select Sacramento county north and south along with my new selections otherwise it will load my new selection and delete my Sacramento county norht and south. If this has happened than your GPSr is running of the base maps which aren't very accurate and may not have any street names. I agree with the other posters that I believe your unit is defective and I would contact Garmin for a return. This is another reason why you purchased a Garmin, because of their excallent customer service.
  24. When I first started I cached exclusively with my two daughters. We were getting close to our 100th find and we were looking at some of the accomplisment coins for our finds when they said they wanted their own coin with their own name on it. I had to go back and relog all of their finds under their new user names and I cache with mine whether or not I go with my daughters. I work for the fire department, so I get 4 days off to do what I want and if the girls are in school I will go out in the mornings with my dog.
  25. Hello, I have a 60csx and my two daughters each have the venture CX. It is pretty accurate in getting them to the caches. We don't cache in many areas that need the high sensitivity receiver for them, they are 12 and 9 years old. If there is any problem with reception, we confirm on my GPS and again we have had no problems with theirs. My 60csx has the electronic compass, I use it on and off and have not yet determined if I like it or not. The Venture CX does not have the electronic compass and again they have made many finds with their GPS. I was able to get 2 of them at a very reasonable price, just under $100.00 each new. If I were to get another one as a base model just for geocaching I would choose the venture HC. It has 24 mb of built in memory which will give you the ability to add some maps and has the high sensitivity receiver and it is in color. It also comes with the cable to transfer information from the computer to unit where the venture CX does not and you will have to purchase a cable unless you already own some type of USB to Mini USB cable like one for a camera or a cell phone. When checking out some of the products look to see what comes in the box. Sometimes it is very basic and sometimes it has a lot. If it is basic you might have added costs that you weren't expecting. Another thing to remember when purchasing an item is to buy it from reputable seller that has an actual receipt like Amazon.com or someone else so that you will have the one year warranty from Garmin. If you buy from ebay, garmin will not honor the warranty because they want you to buy from authorized reseller. There are some sellers on ebay that are authorized sellers and will give you an actual store receipt but you must read through all the mumbo jumbo on their page listing to see that or you can email the seller to see if they can send you a receipt. As you can see from my posting I also did a lot of research before purchasing my devices. Hope this helps.
