  1. If you are going to use your device for driving than I suggest City Navigator NT. You may also need to get an sd card for your device to hold the maps.
  2. I'm sorry, I got navigator and topo mixed up. In Topo you can highlight smaller grids that allow you to choose more specific areas.
  3. Just install the area that you need, don't try to install the whole US. Just install the state you are in or the counties you utilze the most. I do not know how to compress the maps. I live in California and have the whole state loaded with parts of Nevada because I am in the Sacramento area near Tahoe.
  4. I had the same problem a long time ago. I am strictly using Firefox and my GSAK opens in firefox. In the FireFox settings or internet options you need to make Firefox the defaault browser or something like that so that all of the things you want to open up for the internet open in firefox. I am not at my computer so I can't remember how to do it off the top of my head. Once you figure out that setting GSAK will open up in Firefox. When I get home later tonight I will check the forums to see if you have figured it out. If you haven't, I will try and see what the setting should be.
  5. When I have worked on a hard puzzle with the help of a cache owner, they have offered their number for when I visit the cache to help figure out how to open it. I used it once but the owner was busy and I was able to figure out how to open the cache on my own. I have had friends call me about caches I had found previously to verify if they are looking in the same area where I found it but I will not tell them where it is. I also log DNF's on any cache that I had tried to search for whether it be 5 minutes or longer. I leave notes if I was unable to search due to obstructions, like a new fence put around an area for construction, or to much muggle activity. Since I didn't actually start to search I do not consider it a DNF.
  6. One other thing to point out is if you use GSAK or another program to put the geocaches onto your GPS by name and then use cachmate to put them on your PDA by name you have to make sure what the true name of the cache is. If the cache starts with quoutes and you are looking up the name inyour PDA and forget about the quoutes, you will think you forgot to load into the PDA. Titles with quotes are at the beginning of your alphabetical search. So if you are looking for a cached named "will you find it" under the W's, you will not find it. You will have to look for it by the quotation marks first then the letter.
  7. I would be more than glad to pay extra for a family account that would enable the PM to log the finds for the individuals in their family that are not PM's. I just don't need another set of notifications, PQ's, or other services or benefits of a PM for my daughters who are 9 and 12. They never go out without me. I'm the one who enters the coordinates into their GPS's, I'm the one who drives us to the caches, and I'm the one who log's their finds for them. What it really comes down to is their ability to see "smiley faces" on their account page and in their map. If we were not able to log their finds into PMO caches I would still make a note of them being with me on my log and state who found it and state that they aren't able to log a find. I would also update their profile page with GSAK, which would have their true number of finds and accomplishments. I would then make a note on their profile page as to why their numbers differed because of the inability to log finds onto PM caches. I would not try and contact the owner because, as I stated in my previous post, it doesn't always work. The most important thing to me is not the ability to log finds on the cache pages but the time I spend with my daughters. This is quality time that enables me to see smiles on my girls faces and not just on a website.
  8. I don't have cats but I do have a golden retriever who has eaten (twice) my Palm Tungston data cable. I don't understand why she does it because I take her with me whenever I go out caching. Maybe it's her way of telling me I spend to much time on the computer and not enough time on the trails.
  9. Do what I do. Run a PQ for the area that you are planning on visiting for unfound caches and then run an identical second PQ of the area for found caches. This will give you 2 separate PQ's with different information. You should then be able to load them into your GPS and they will show up. I do not know why you would want to have found icons loaded into your GPS unless you plan on hiding one in the area. Otherwise there is no need to keep the found geocaches on your GPS. You only need to run one for the area you plan on visiting by clicking the tabs for "you haven't found" and are "active" on the PQ page.
  10. I see that the cache is disabled when I click on the link. When I disable a cache it shows up on my account details page with a red circle and a line through it. I have not disabled a cache since Oct/08 though. I have been receiving updates via my notifications of other members disabling their caches so I haven't seen the problem you are describing.
  11. Hello, Let me clarify something before I get more emails complaining that it just can't be done. I have never utilized the way that has been mentioned in this post in logging non PM finds onto PM caches. I am a PM and my daughters, ages 12 and 9, are not. I have been logging their finds for quite some time onto PM caches. I cannot justify spending $60.00 a year to make them PM's so they can just log a few more finds. I did try and email owners for permission to open the cache for me to log their finds but out of 10 emails I received 1 reply and that reply informed me of the "backdoor" logging capabilities and to look up how to do it via the forums. I also emailed owners asking for permission to log via a "backdoor" procedure, again out of about 10 emails I received 1 reply and they didn't care what I did. The way I do it does not allow for just a non PM to log in a find into a PM cache. My way enables families or teams with at least one (1) PM to log the finds of non PM's onto PM caches. This is what I thought this topic was about. If you have doubts about the ability to do this, than check out my daughters profiles, sarahbear5 and ry-ry606(both non PM), and see that they have logs as recently as December 5th on a PM cache. Again, if you would like to know how I am able to log their finds than email me and I will pass on the information. I "do not" know of a way for just a non PM to log the find unless they have a friend or family member who is a PM to help them. Thanks, Paul, ao318
  12. I became tired of reading all of these posts because there were so many so i jumped to the end of the topic. From the last few posts, I am gathering that most people are still unable to log non PM into PM caches. I am a premium member and my kids are not. I am still able to log them onto premium sites. I just showed a friend how to do it last week and tested it before I made this post. He does it the way you all are doing it, I do it a different way that still works for me. Since there seems to be so much concern about this process and if would you like to know how I do it, please email me from my profile page and I will explain the process to you. If you would like to make it public I can do that also but is there the concern of also fixing this loophole? Paul, ao318 Please look at post #85 for clarification
  13. The rule for our family is that when a person finds it they stop where they are and just smile in the direction of the cache. As each person notices the one person standing and smiling we all work our way over and do the same until the last person see's the smiling crowd and comes over. The person who initially found it gets to make the grab and then we all sign in. We aren't in any hurry to find the caches so i don't know how this would wok for those groups on their power finds.
  14. I have found cheap palm cables on ebay. My dog has eaten 2 of them and that's where I found the best prices.
  15. I also have the 60csx and do the same with a Palm TungstonE. I have not tried any of the newer Garmins.
  16. I had a similar issue where Groundspeak billed paypal for my renewing membership but paypal didn't pay because Groundspeak no longer has that option. I canceled the subscription and renewed my membership with a credit card that allows me to auto renew. Otherwise you have to do it yourself through paypal.
  17. As the previous post shows, it is a drink. It is a small tube about 2.5 - 3 inches long about 0.5 inches wide with a flip top lid. It holds powder that you add to a water bottle to make an instant sports drink. I have not found one I have a friend who drinks them.
  18. What type of GPS? Brand, make, model? This would help.
  19. I have no personal experience with the Colorado. I have a 60csx and I am very happy with it. I also use a palm tungsten e2 for the paperless caching aspect and have had no problems. If I were to buy another GPS it would be wither the legend hcx or vista hcx depending on my needs.
  20. When I started out my kids and I logged under my name. As soon as we approached 100 finds I said we could get a 100 finds coin to celebrate. When I said that they both, ages 9 and 12, wanted their own coin with their own name on it. I had to go back through the logs and post all of their finds. We know have 3 separate accounts. When I log their finds I ask them what they want me to write. It also enables me to know which caches I have gone on by myself and can take them back to find on their own. Having a team account is fine but my kids wanted their own so we all have our own experiences.
  21. I just retrieved 2 TB's from a cache that doesn't get visited very often. When I got home to log them I had discovered that they had been in that cache for exactly 1 yr and a couple of days. One of the TB's was listed as missing because it hadn't moved so long. They are on the larger side and I haven't found a cache to put them in as of yet.
  22. Another option is to list your geocaches or waypoints by name not closest until you are actually in the area you want to be in. When you have opened either the widow to view the information just hit your menu button and scroll down to show by name and select that. Your information should now be there.
  23. If you become a premium member you can run a pocket query for a specific type of cache in the area you would like to search for like all diff 1-2 with a terr of 1-3. You would also need to open this PQ in another software program like GSAK, or if you could use Mapsource if you have have a Garmin GPS that came with that software. You could then plot your course to find the easier caches along your hike.
  24. One thing to remember when purchasing a Garmin product is to purchase from an authoized seller, like Amazon. If you buy from ebay or some other auction places, Garmin will not honor the warranty. You will need to have an actual store receipt, not just the bid receipt. I have both TOPO and City Navigator. TOPO does have a lot of the trails. Occasionally, not often, I do go to a place that does not have the trails loaded into TOPO. Another thing is that TOPO does not have auto routing, a feature that enables you to use the GPS as an auto GPS for driving around. You would either need to have a GPS specifically for your vehicle or purchase the City Navigator software.
