  1. I create a GPX/LOC file via GSAK and open it with Google Earth. This seems to put the caches in the correct spot and the do not wiggle around. I had the same experience and tried this instead and it seems to work fine for me.
  2. You can also change the default coordinates in Google Earth to the ones scene on geocaching.com. Here is how: 1) On the menu bar click on tools and open the options setting. 2) This will open a new window. Click on the 3D view tab. 3) In the show lat/lon option, choose Degrees, Decimal Minutes. 4) Select Apply and you are done. Doing this will give you the coordinates that geocaching.com shows. It is also easier when entering coordinates to see where the caches might be.
  3. This person in our area, I Challenge You, has set up a bunch of challenges. I don't know if they are common ones but they have some I can't complete because of my job as a firefighter.
  4. What type of price are you looking at?
  5. I prefer to go out on hikes along the river with my dog and kids. My kids like to do ones at local parks so they can play on the swings and slides after finding the cache. There are days when I can't get out and just want to find a few and will do the LPC's and such just to get everyone out of the house. For me, it depends on who I am with and how much time I have. As you can see from my profile that I do not go out everyday and I usually don't find a lot when I go out. There are some days I go back to caches that I have found on my own with my kids so that they can find them. We just like spending the time together.
  6. I also own a 60csx and have noticed that when the batteries start to drop that I need to calibrate the compass. Once I change the batteries everything is fine. When I was just starting it bothered me that the compass was point the opposite way I was walking yet the distance to the cache was getting smaller. Now when I see that happening I just change the batteries and all is fine.
  7. The legend and vista are identical except for the compass and altimeter. I have a 60csx which has the compass and I switch back and forth between using it and not using it. My daughters have the Venture CX, and it does not have the electronic compass, altimeter, or the high sensitivity receiver. It works fine for them, they just have to remember to walk a little to see where the arrow is pointing. I bring up their GPS only for comparison of the compass feature. I would get the legend if the compass is not important to you. As I said, I switch back and forth between using it and have not yet made up my mind about it.

    First find

Congratulations on the first of many....
  9. If you are together you could log under your team name or your individual name. If you go by yourself, you should log under your individual name. My daughters and I created a team name recently, Team-3D, as a regular member account, I am a PM. It stands for Dad, Daughters, and Dog. We log that name in the book and then we get home we log our finds on our individual accounts referencing that we logged the cache as Team-3D. We did this so that we could just write one name in the log and then move on to the next cache. It is also easier to write T3D on micros. It just really matters to you. If you only log team finds as a team and individual logs separately, your total numbers will be off. If this doesn't matter to you than fine. If it does than you will need to log your team finds as an individual to keep your count accurate and know which finds you have done. Meaning if you log each differently and there is a park near you that you found 6 caches under the team account that park will always show up as not found. It all depends on what you want to do.
  10. I had to do the same thing. Just write on their logs that they were with you and now wanted their own ID. Everything will be good. You'll also have to back dte all of the finds to when they found them with you.
  11. Since you already have a vehicle GPS with mapping software, I would recommend the Garmin Topo software. You could purchase it on a DVD and then buy a 2GB micro SD card to put the maps on. I use it and I am happy with it. Others may have other opinions. Thats what's nice about the Forums. Good Luck.
  12. Here is mine. Payne Family Cache . 76 finds 1 DNF, mine. Haven't been back yet to look for it again yet.
  13. I am not sure. I did it the hard way when my daughters wanted their own accounts. We went back through and had to re-log the last 100 caches we did together with their names. It is better if you start before they get too involved and you have to do even more than I did. If there is an easier way to do it, I don't know it.
  14. If you have a Nuvi, than I wouldn't get City Navigator I would get Topo. It is cheaper than navigator and it will give you decent maps. I didn't have a car GPs so I bought Navigator, I am happy with it but would have liked voices vs Beep, traffic updates, and better choices for directions with a car unit vs the hand held options. The other thing is do you want or need the electronic compass. That is you next question. Some places have the vista at the same or a cheaper price than the legend. Look around and make a choice.
  15. Where I live there are many horse trails that have caches on them. I don't ride I walk, but here in the Sacramento area we have a few. You'll just have to find out where the horse trails are than check the maps to see if there are caches along that trail.
  16. I have both installed on my 60csx. You can have both running at the same time or switch. Yes they come on a memory card but you would only be able to have one memory card installed at a time. They do not make one with both software programs on it. It would be better to get the DVD's for that. The largest micro SD card is 2 GB. You don't need all of the US on the card, just put the states you are near and there will be plenty of room. If you are traveling, just install those areas into your gps.
  17. I also have a 9 and 12 year old that geocache. After 100 finds they wanted their own profiles. We had to go back and log all their finds to update their account. I have their email sent to me for just the reason Neos mentioned. It is easier to start it now than after 100 finds like I did. Since they didn't sign the log you could do as we did when we started logging them. We just stated in their log that "I just created a user name and had found this cache with my mom/dad, "your name".
  18. Sorry, wrong link. Here is the one I meant to send, Link . It states, "Please note: You will be in violation of federal regulation by placing a cache in any area administered by the National Park Service (US). The National Park regulations are intended to protect the fragile environment, and historical and cultural areas found in the parks."
  19. You are only allowed to run 5 per day. Mark it for tomorrow if you have already run 5. Also you can run each PQ once a week, so if you have already run it you will have to wait. Another option is to modify another PQ to be like this one and run it tomorrow. Last option is if none of the above pertains is that you may have goofed up this PQ. You can check to see if it actually runs anything by previewing it. If you get an error or no caches than you will have to modify your choices in your settings until you get what you want. I hope this helps.
  20. Click on this link, Park Geocaching Guidelines
  21. I'll answer your second question first. Yes, there is a way to update you of "new notifications". When you open your account window there is a list of options on your right. Look down at your "premium features" and there is a selection there for "set up notifications". Here is where you can set up all the different caches you want to be notified for different issues like, newly listed, cache maintenance, disabled, archived, available, etc. Now your first question. You might be selecting too many options in some of your selections. try scaling back a few choices and then preview your selection to see if that has worked. Continue doing this until you find he right selection of options you need selected. It's mostly trial and error to figure out. Good luck
  22. I can do this on m Garmin 60CSX. This how I do it. Open the cache you want to project in your geocache folder, don't select goto yet, and hit the menu button. Once that is open it gives you a bunch of options and choose the "project waypoint" option. From here you enter the degrees and distance. It will then give you a new waypoint to walk to. This is where you should be looking. Good luck.
  23. Ypu do have a feature though that keeps track of your finds and it makes it easier to remember the order in which you found your caches for the day. If you open the calendar feature and then click on the day, it will open a list of all of the caches you found for that day and then you can follow the order as you log your finds.
  24. The only way to know if a cache has been found recently is to visit the cache page and review the logs and look at the dates of those logs and see if it has been logged as found, not found, disabled, etc. If on the logs you see that everyone has been finding it than it is most likely there. If the last 4 logs are all DNF's, than it is most likely not there. If there has been one DNF than maybe that person just didn't find and you can try and look for it. Another way is to become a premium member and create a pocket query for caches that have been found within the last 7 days. You can also create many other versions of PQ's for whatever you want to look up.
  25. Initially you do not need maps if you are caching in areas that you are familiar with like local parks and playgrounds. All you need to do is get to the parking lot and start your hunt. One thing you can do to make it easier for you to get an idea where the cache may be located is to utilize the map on the cache page in the bottom right hand corner. Click on it and then find the cache you want to visit and then in the upper right hand corner change the view from "map" to "satellite" and zoom into the cache and it will give you an idea of where you will might have to hike to or which side of a river or road the cache might be on.
