  1. You could look up the cachers profiles and then look at the caches they found for that date. Then click on each of those to look at the cache page to get an idea of where it was located, size of cache, and if it is still active or archived. Once you find out which cache it is, you can then send a message to the cache owner that you have it and what they would like to do. Good luck... Edit for punctuation.
  2. I also am one of those people that adopted caches that I have found and haven't found. In fact I asked the people here on the forums if it would be prudent to log the ones I haven't found yet as finds. I asked this because I wanted to go out and check the caches that I had adopted to ensure they were ok. The general consensus of the replies were that they thought it would be ok to log finds on the 2 I hadn't found as long as I stated in my log as to why I am logging them as finds. So that is what I did.
  3. In the menu section there is a settings feature. Inside that is the maps section. Click on the maps and scroll through them. If they are checked than they are active. If the box is empty, than they are not.
  4. I have a 60csx and have noticed that when my batteries start to get low my compass will jump around and even point the wrong way. When that happens either change out your batteries and recalibrate the compass or just watch the section with the distance remaining until you are close to GZ. I always carry extra batteries with me because of this.
  5. As stated, anything from a dollar store, 99 cent store, or whatever. Some people leave marbles, old pennies, erasers, anything and everything. Just remember to make a trade of equal value or better. So have a few nice items or you'll be emptying out the whole bag for something nice. If you find a TB, you will have to log it as found from it's specific TB page. Just use the number to open up the page in the Trackables section. To drop off a TB, all you need to do is select the TB from a list of trackables just below your log for the cahce. Make sure you do this before you submit your log for the cache or you will have to log a "Note" for the cache and state something like, "Forgot to drop TB." You will still have to select the TB in the list before you hit submit. I have 2 daughters ages 12 and 10. They love going with me. My wife likes that I take them because she can stay home and do her own thing. I have one recommendation for you. If you do end up enjoying this game and so does your son and possibly the whole family, ask them if they want their own geocaching name before you find a lot of caches. It is easier to back log 10-20 caches than 100-200 for each family member. My daughters asked for their own id's when we were approaching 100 caches and said I was going to get a geocoin to celebrate our 100. They said they wanted their own coin with their own name. So off I went to help them log their 100 finds. Good luck and enjoy....
  6. Thanks for all the comments. I'll try and see if I can find them. I know where 3 are supposed to be, but you all know how caches sometimes have a way of moving or being hidden differently than they were initially placed. If I find the other two, I will log them as a find with an explanation in my log. I appreciate all of the feedback. I guess this thread can be closed.
  7. I was just looking at my google map in gc.com to look at the new caches I adopted and noticed that the 3 I had found previously were smiley faces and the 2 I haven't were the stars. Kinda funny.
  8. This adoption thing happened pretty quickly. I adopted the caches today. Of the 2 I have not found, one is a puzzle that I figured out on Thursday prior to even knowing I was going to adopt them. I had contacted the owner out of curiosity after solving it and looking at his profile and noticed that he moved to Texas 4 months ago. I wanted find out whether or not he had someone here in CA to help him maintain them while he was gone. I informed him that his caches were close to my house and could help him out if needed, the farthest is just over 3 miles away. He replied and said his move to Texas was permanent and asked if I could adopt them. I then gave him the directions on how to do it and then hadn't heard back until this morning when I saw the links in my email to adopt them. I then followed the directions and adopted all of them and then it flashed on me that I hadn't found 2 of them and that's when the thought crossed my mind, "Since I now own them and haven't found them should I claim them as a find?" If I did claim them as a find I would make sure that in my log I explained how and why I am finding my newly adopted caches. I was just curious if others had done it, how it would be perceived, and just thoughts about it. Thanks.
  9. The only thing I have hurt so far is just pride. I was out with my daughters one day looking for a cache. I always tell them to be careful of what you step on like slippery rocks, wet logs, etc. Well this day we were having a very difficult time finding a particular cache. It was near a downed log. Next to the log was a tree with a small birdhouse. Well, I decide that since we cannot find it on the ground it must be in the bird house. So I carefully step onto the log, slowly stand up, and then fell onto but and onto the ground. Well my kids are just busting up over their dear old dad falling off he log and landing on the ground. Then my youngest, who was 9 at the time, tells me, "that's why we don't stand on logs dad." All I could do is say, "That's right honey." As I slowly picked myself up off the ground. We eventually found the cache about 20' away from the log.
  10. Hello all. I have a question about adopting caches. I just adopted 5 caches from a local cacher hat has moved to Texas because of work. I have found 3 of the 5 and had planned on doing the other 2. In fact that's how I found out that he had moved. I solved one of his puzzle caches and had noticed that I haven't seen his name lately and clicked on his profile and saw that he had moved to Texas on his profile page. I offered to help him out if he needed and he suggested that I adopt his caches. Now that I am the cache owner, I was going to check on all 5 to make sure everything is ok with them on Tuesday, after I get off shift from the firehouse. Here is my question. Should I claim a find on the 2 that I need to find since I haven't found them before or just post maintenance performed notes on them? It really doesn't matter to me what I do. I just don't want to seem like I am posting finds on my own caches for number purposes. If you were to click on my profile you will see that this game is not about the numbers for me. I was just helping a fellow cacher out. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
  11. Found this in the forums: Nintendo DS Maybe it's what you wanted.
  12. I have a 60csx and 2 Legend CX's that my daughters use. WE don't have a lot of cover problems and their GPSr's are pretty accurate. It really boils down to whether or not you want the high sensitivity receiver. A lot of people recommend that and also would recommend it. Now, if you have a car GPS already than I would go for the HCX. Another thing, if you ever do decide to upgrade from the CX to the HCX you will have to pay for another code to install the maps onto it. That's one negative of the garmin product but it is a little one. The CX is a little outdated but a nice unit. Just figure out what you need and want. Good Luck.

    New Sponsor Ads

I was having this problem also but if you look at these links, Sponsored Links and the Release notes, you will see that they have been fixed. I also checked other google maps when it started to see if it was something more and didn't find it on any other google map except for the ones at GC.com. Yes, I noticed it also at the same time the updates had been done. I made comments in the forums and the problem was solved almost immediately after posting those comments. As I said in those other posts, "Thank you for the quick response".
  14. I also take my golden retriever with me when I cache. We live in Sacramento and hike all along the river and the foothills. The 2 biggest concerns I have for her are stickers and ticks. She has long golden hair and just gets tons of stickers in her paws, legs, and belly. This is also a problem for the ticks, unless they are large enough to see right away. Make sure to check your dog whenever you leave a bushy area and before you get in your car and when you get home and the next day. I use the flea and tick ointment on her but have still found a tick or two on her a couple of days later. Because of this, it is a good idea to have a tick puller in your bag not only for the dog but yourself.
  15. The sponsored links image is gone now. Thank you....

  17. It's gone now. Thank you...
  18. Thanks for looking into it. I looked up something using google maps and it doesn't show up on the maps from their website.
  19. Did this update add a "sponsored links" shadow box to the maps screen? It shows up when you are on the maps and then click a cache to get it's quick info. It shows up in the right hand bottom corner and has nothing inside of it but you cannot close it once it is open. You also cannot click on any of the caches it covers up to view their info. The only way to remove the box is to go to a different screen and then return to the maps page. Yet, if you click on another cache it shows up all over again. edited to add: Firefox, latest version and I am logged into GC.com.
  20. I'm getting it also. Using newest version of firefox. it only happens when I am on the map page and click a cache to get the quick view info for it. The sponsored links box opens in the right hand corner of the map and I can't close it. Edited to add: I am logged in...
  21. Let's take a look at a couple of your issues. 1) Download waypoints. - you can either hit the mark button and then modify the coordinates to what you want as a destination or you can download them from gc.com with the garmin plug in and a usb cable. 2) purpose of waypoints - these are the locations of the geocache you want to visit. You can either have them entered in as the GC# or the Waypoint name if you enter them manually. If you download them from the site, because it appears that you are not a premium member, it will download by the gc# to your gps. 3) how to add a cache. - the geocache is basically a waypoint that has the treasure chest icon added to it. 4) How to mark as found. - when you find it there is an option at the bottom of the compass page that will say "found". Select that and then the GPS will ask you if you want to find the next closest waypoint or geocache.(this kinda answer your next question a little but I will add more) 5) How to find in nearby location - Select the find button, choose either geocache or waypoint. The waypoints or caches will be listed by distance from where you are at. Select the one you want to go to and follow the directions. Sometimes it is easier to be on the map page and scroll the arrow towards one of the geocaches or waypoints and select that one to find. These are vague answers. You really need to just play with it and practice. You will be able to pick it up pretty quickly. Good luck. There are more people that are more knowledgeable than I am and will probably give you some links to get the answers from. edited for spelling errors.
  22. I agree that I do not like the idea of having a site that gives the answers to puzzles and multi's but I don't condemn it either. I think a better use for that site would be to have links to common ciphers, puzzle sites, history sites, or anything that would assist in solving puzzles without actually naming the cache or solving it for you. Another thing would be links to things like fizzycalc to assist in figuring these things out. Every-time I solve a puzzle I save the the link or links that helped me in a folder in my bookmarks. This would be something I would not object too.
  23. I did that for my 2 daughters and had to manually enter in each cache find for each of them. On each log we stated that "they had just created an account and are now back logging finds with their dad, ao318." It wasn't fun. They each had over 100 finds which will be similar to your sons. Hopefully someone else knows a better way. Good luck.
  24. I have a hard time with my 60csx, my watch, my PDA, and anything that has a small screen when I have my polarized sunglasses on. I pretty much always flip them onto my hat as I am looking at my GPS.
