  1. Thanks, didn't even realize you can select multiples.
  2. I was tring to set up a pocket query to return as many locationless caches as possible. Problem is it requires you to enter a location (State, zip, etc) and only returns caches based on that location. I can only get about 20 hits based on 500 miles from my location (as far out as it lets you go). Any way around this?
  3. You can download the newest SportTrak Map update here: http://www.magellangps.com/en/support/products/upgrades/upgrade_sportrakmap.asp

    Logs

I just hid my fist cache a couple of weeks ago and had my first three logs this week. It's really cool to watch and see when people find it and what they have to say. I'd be kind of bummed if someone had gone to visit but not logged it. I'd say yes, log your visits.
  6. I placed a cache in a state park; in the cache description I stated that it was in a new state park facility. My cache was archived by the reviewer with an explanation that caches on a state park must have approval from the park manager. I talked to the manager and he had no problem with it, especially since I promised to visit it weekly (I ride my mountain bike around the trail 3 or 4 times/wk) and I also included some CITO containers with trash bags to encourage people to keep things clean. Some people on the forum seem to think you should not ask permission, just keep your mouth shut and do it. Do you also then feel you should be vague in your description of the cache, not admit it is on state park land when you submit it for approval?
  7. quote:Originally posted by hammack:Magellan SporTrak Pro has a reputation of having good reception in the woods. But there is some debate about whether or not the reception is real or "projected" based on recent reception. I have a Magellan SportTrak Map, and it works great. You can turn on an alarm that will let you know if you lose satellite lock just like the Garmin's, only difference is that it doesn't lose the lock as often I just came back from a cache in which many logs comment on having a hard time keeping the link. I turned on the alarm and watched my satellites, only time I lost the lock was after I found the cache and had attached the GPSr to my belt clip. Under the trees, against my body, below my arms, and the alarm finally went off. I believe they are still running rebates on the Magellans right now too.

  9. I have a SportTrak Map with Mapsend streets. Nothing you can do to change the accuracy of the maps, I find most roads are pretty close, a few are off. Most of the time that I am off of a road is due to curves in the road, waypoints are saved at intervals, so you will have straight lines between points and the road may bend away from that line.
  10. One other thought, are you testing the problem GPX files on your "trial" version of the program? I don't remember what the limitations are on the trial, but maybe these files work fine on the full version but have a problem on the trial people are testing. You've probably already thought of these things, but I'm a developer too and the debuger just starts coming out in me
  11. I will send you my files today. But have you tracked the hardware people are using? Since they all work for you it sounds like it may depend on the the make/model of pocketpc. I have a Dell Axim 400MHz, importing the GPX files totally locked it up, had to do a soft reset. I thought maybe it had to do with the size of the GPX files, so I edited a file down to only 10 caches, still had same result. Finally just uninstalled CacheDragon, and am using GPXview on my Axim.
  12. I own a Magellan and think it's the greatest. From the postings I've seen most Garmin owners think the Garmin also is the greatest. Seems that both companies make good products, but like anything you buy, some people will run into a problem here and there. Watching postings in a forum is the worst way to evaluate a product, people go to forums when they have a problem/complaint, they don't just go to post "My GPS worked great today", until a thread like this starts looking for complaints and the supporters will come from everywhere.
  13. Never expected this thread to turn into a legal discussion when I posted it, but I have to point out that the other website mentioned in the newspaper article also uses the word geocaching throughout their web pages. Unless they have been granted permission to use it, it does not appear that in the context of running a treasure hunting game, Grounded Inc is trying very hard to protect the trademark. I also don't see anything on the geocaching.com web site that would inform anyone that "geocaching" is a trademark, and actually I would think since they make a pretty big deal on the usage of the logo (http://www.geocaching.com/about/logousage.asp ) they would also do the same for the word geocaching. On the logo page you will find that the term geocaching is referred to very generically, it never even hints that the term is also protected in any way.
  14. The Palm Beach Post ran a story on geocaching today, and is setting up 4 caches to be posted on their web site this weekend. Read about it here: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/accent/content/accent/local/geocaching_index.html
  15. I'm 43/M and my kids 13/F and 16/M. Of course there is my daughter's pug (the geopug himself) that's usually with us 9 months/M.

Teach a man to fish, he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day" - Dave Barry_ I really don't mind being a newbie in a sport where an "old timer" is less than two years. Kind of puts the newbie sniping thread in perspective LOL
  17. The SportTrak has a built in base map of a few major roads and Highways, to get a complete road map you will need to purchase one of Magellans Map Send software CDs.
  18. Speaking as one of those newbies, looking at the messages from the past few days, things are looking a little combatitive on these boards. I would only suggest to the veterans, that yes many of these things have been discussed before, but with media attention and word of mouth geocaching is growing fast. Things change, and it's probably a good thing to revist many of these issues and think about what is best for the sport in the future. Just because something worked great in the past, doesn't mean that it will continue to do so in the future. Got to admit however, it's working great now because I'm hooked
  19. If you do a Mapblast lookup for an address, just look at the URL it returns. You will see some numbers that look like 38.89869%2c-77.03563, those are the coordinates.
  20. Just a short timer, but yes short timers can have opinions - Sounds like Verboten's idea would be the way to go to at least help the situation and maybe force people to think about the caches once a year. One question, what do you do if they don't respond to the email? Archive it? Bet that would clean things up - if you can't take enough resposibility to respond to an email, how can you take the responsibility of maintaining a cache. 21. Ok, here is a test after logging out and back in.
  22. Payed my $30.00 and set my Title in my profile to Premium Member, but I still show as Geocacher in the forums. Am I doing something wrong?
  23. Started Memorial Day weekend, and have 15 finds and just payed my 30 bucks to become a premium member. I seem to have this need to at least get a couple every weekend. Maybe I'm becoming cache dependent - knew I was out of control at this hard to find cache today (read log): http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=87fbb2d5-1d9e-4e86-a1b8-2e713cf187ff
  24. Just hid my first cache, I liked this idea so much that I added a supply of containers to the cache and then a note at the bottom of my cache discription that reads "Take a Cache In, Trash Out film canister (contains a bag) then refill it and pass it on". The cache is close to my home and I ride my mountain bike around the trail 2 or 3 times a week so I can keep it supplied. The cache is in a state park so I had to get permission from the park manager. I think my explanation of Cache In, Trash Out helped sell him on geocaching being a good thing for the park!
