  1. Oh ya... and hunting season is the other reason. There are a ton of hunt camps up there. I have visited a few as the trails to get to some of them are quite good. I'd be into going back next year. There are some great campsites in the area that are mostly 4x4 access in the summer... and i'd still like to get that 5/5 off my to do list.
  2. If your going in with a truck, this time of year is not good. Johnstons hole is about a minimum of 3 feet deep in the dry season. Other wise it sounds like your truck is capable. I haven't been up there in a couple of years. Actually, the shear number of caches in the area has realy turned me away from going back. There used to be just a few good caches, now there is a whole power trail to Bushwacker. IMO it has really "cheapened" the 5/5 status of the original cache.
  3. It peeves me off when it happens to my TB's. I avidly follow my TB's and have emailed people on a number of occasions to find out what happened to them. One was lost for a year before being found while house cleaning... I wish that if a TB is not in a cache as logged, the first person to notice would mention so in their log. I've had 5 people log a cache over months before someone mentions there are no trackables in it. When did it go missing? Did someone not log it or did some muggle run off with it leaving the cache intact? Makes it hard to track down your trackable... still, I have found most to respond favourably when emailed has resulted in getting it moving/finding out what happened to it.
  4. Now that's what I was talking about. Thanks Juicepig!! I have almost half of them done. It's the northern Ont. ones I'll have trouble with!!
  5. LOL! I don't think that would be possible!! I was planning on driving in to Lingham Lake and as far as I could and hoofing it the rest of the way. From my research, it would be a 2hr hike in and out. There are a bunch of other off road caches near there that I want to do. As for anyone coming up with an ATV, could I hitch a ride from Lingham Lake??!! Planning on Aug 21 or 28. Email me though my profile if we can meet up.
  6. Well now that I can't be the one with the lowest number of finds anymore, maybe I can still be in the the top 20 to get the 81Proof. I'm just looking for personal satisfaction not competition. I'm pushing this summer to do a lot of the caches that I need (still wouldn't mind to get together with others on a few) and I still need the 5/5. One of my goals in completing this challenge is to find mostly traditional caches without a boat (as I do not own a canoe and I just can't seem to figure out those mysteries). That said, there are two in Algonquin that I found and I might just tackle one or two puzzles that I might have a shot at figuring out. The 4x4 comes in handy though... One day I will complete this challenge. If I haven't said it before, thanks for giving me a reason to find difficult to get to caches in places far far away!! Oh I almost forgot... I would like to do it for my 500th find but we will see...
  7. Well, this is a new year and since my truck died in the begining of Sept last year I never did get to the Bushwhacker cache. Now I have a new(er) truck -same make as before BTW- and I'm looking to do it this year around the end of August (21-22) or (28-29) There is a few 81 Proof caches I need in the area (all off 4x4 trails) and want to do them in one weekend. I am still looking for some other trucks to go to interesting caches with on off roading trips/day trips/camping ventures. Any previous repliers still interested? Anyone willing to get together for some 81 Proof caches? I'll be at the Spring Fling in my red 4Runner (with TB) as well. If you see me leave a note or talk to me (if I can be found!!) Or you can just reply here too.
  8. I'll be interested to know how the Vancouver Backroads Challenge works out. I have suggested somthing similar for Ontario. Maybe it did get a few wheels turning after all!! I'd be willing to help get a challenge like it together as well. (One for each book perhaps?)
  9. Hi! Yes, I am a lurker... There, I admitted it!! Are you happy? I'll be at the lukers anonymous meeting tuesday as well... Not just here but everywhere. The reason... It is because I go to a forum with a question in mind or desire for info and with a bit of searching I can spend hours gaining lots of information and have all my questions answered. 9 times out of 10. all the info I need has already been writen about and I don't feel the need to contribute to somthing that has already been contributed to death. Once in a while, I will throw my two cents in (if I feel strongly enough about it) or answer a question that hasn't been answered yet. The problem is most of the times I do post anywhere, I am either ignored or questioned about my question and the question never gets answered. Strange, but when you post as a last resort instead of the first resort and searched the forums and not found anything, I guess that no one has ever run into the problem. Anyway that's all starting to change and now I find myself writing longer logs all the time and my typing is improving too. BTW. Caching for 3 years and over 400 finds in case anyone is keeping track
  10. As for the question at hand, I think this statement hits the nail on the head (so to speak) I've had this problem many times and ended up just looking for larger containers. As for the size issue... I think Groundspeak should add a "nano" size listing. Here’s why. Most of you "long time" geocachers have stated that the "micro" size never existed until a large number of smaller than normal caches made it necessary. I think this has happened to the micro. With the growing popularity of geocaching in general and more and more caches being placed, I would say that the nano should be given a separate distinction. It takes a different method to find a nano rather than a micro. Whoever said that nanos and micros can be hidden in the same spots hasn't found too many nanos. (Or so it seems ) There has been more than once that I went home to log a DNF and call it missing only to find out it was a nano, go back, and find it hiding in a spot no film canister would fit. Was it more challenging? Yes. Was it fair to call it a micro? Is it fair to call a micro small? Maybe there should be more distinction.... Just my 2 cents
  11. Well, I scouted the trail a bit last weekend and you definitely DO NOT want to go at this one alone. I talked to some people who know the trail and got a few tips as well. I am planning another run in there either Sept 19 or 26. It would be nice to have a group going all together. Those who don't have a capable truck can bring food and/or beverages. There is camping at both Lingham Lake and the trailhead. There are other 4x4 caches in the area too. Let's make a weekend of it!! Email me if you plan to join us and say which date is better and/or what your driving/bringing on the trip. (TB's welcome too)
  12. Any one else???? You don't have to have a 40" tires and a super suspension lift to go 4x4'ing you know!! I drive the same truck I do every day. (Just don't be afraid of some mud in the fender or a few surface scratches, although if you REALLY want to 4x4... )
  13. Actually, the new Cottage Country Backroads Mapbook has over 60 pages. It covers some of Eastern Ontario, the original cottage area, the near north and Algonquin regions. It covers more area and at a higher scale than the old one but is much more detailed. I would be into trying something like finding 1 or 2 caches from every page. Using the Backroads series sounds like a good idea but limits cachers to either Ontario or BC. That said, there doesn't seem to be many other options though... On the other side of the coin, if you build a challenge, I'm sure people will try.
  14. If anyone wants to get together for some caches, let me know. I have topo's and a 4x4 and those mystery caches usually have me stumped... but...I have a love of bushwacking and tackling those hard to get to places. I just might plan on wheeling in for the Lingham Lake/Bushwacker caches either July 25, 26, or the Aug. long weekend. As I've said on a few occasions, everyone who has got a smiley on this challenge has got over 2000 finds. How about a prize for the one to complete the challenge with the fewest (honest) overall finds. Say... a geocoin ...that would be transferred to anyone who could beat the reining fewest. What think you all?
  15. Looking for other's with 4x4 trucks to make a run for the the Lingham Lake, Bushwacker caches. The 4x4 club trail rides are not really for geocaching. (Very muggly indeed) Just finding a few off-roaders to cache with would be great. I did On a wing and a Prayer with just my truck (I wasn't alone...) but... I should obey the cardinal rule of off roading - Never go alone.
