  1. Have a look at this: CacheWolf: https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfi...p?group_id=2211
  2. Have a look at CacheWolf: here Dokumentation is underway. The app is written in EWE (java like thing) and is freeware. Just import a GPX file and you are ready to go. CacheWolf syncs spoiler pics if you have a conection to the internet. @gcslim: if you have not really advanced very much with the software might I be able to coerce you to join the team? At the moment it consists of two programmers. Why have I not yet made it really public internationally? Well it still uses "km" and for it to become attractive in the states we would have to programm "miles", which shouldn't be a problem. The next version will have a moving map and digital compas giving you a "goto" functionality that will direct you to a cache (of course only if you have PPC with attached GPSr).
  3. CacheWolf pre - ev 4 has been officially released: Download from here. CacheWolf has the following features: * Download details on multiple caches directly from gc.com. Premium membership is not required. * Accepts loc files as a source for downloading cache details. * Displays waypoint, type, difficulty, terrain, owner, date hidden, koordinates, details, hints (decrypt function included) and logs (the last 5 entries). * Allows attaching custom status and personal notes to a cache. * Change type and size of cache. * Choose which columns to display. * Includes cache radar to identify direction, distance and clusteres of caches. * Includes pictures/ photos/ images that are part of the cache description or are included as spoilers. * Export into PCX5 (Mapsource) or HTML. * Allows refreshing of details on selected caches. * Wolf Language (a simple scripting language for performing calculations). * Calculates distance and bearing from own location. * Sort by distance, bearing, status, name, waypoint. Cache On!
  4. For Germany geocaching.de has recently put up a similar service, but it is intended to help out when creating descriptions for a cache. It offers french, german, english and netherland (is this the name of a language?).
  5. Does somebody know how to make custom icons to use with MapSource? I already know (in theory) how to change them on the etrex. Any info appreciated Marc

  7. For all the fans of Java and of the Sharp Zaurus... I just released CacheWolf pre - evolution 3 Check it out here: www.aragorn.de Have fun! Bilbowolf
  8. GPS = Garmin eTrex Legend PDA = Zaurus SL-5500 Logging and planning search = CacheWolf I am totally paperless
  9. Hi Cloudchaser, I just updated the documentation and also added a new version of CacheWolf. Basically I did not want to make to easy to "grab" Cache information. What you would basically have to do is download the .loc files and extract the waypoint names of the caches and plug this into the dialog you get when you click on "Load Caches". Downloading caches will deffinately go faster if you use a bigger machine than the Zaurus. It does not seem to exctremly quick with the regex library I used. Bilbowolf
  10. Hmmm... I have not been planning to do so, as you don't really need it. The software does not require premium membership to download cache data. But doesn't SW evolve incrementaly []?
  11. Hi fellow cachers, I just wanted to inform you on a new caching software that i s available for download. Check out: www.aragorn.de I programmed it mainly for my personal use as I had n ot found a software for my Zaurus. The app: CacheWolf is java based, so it should run on any system that has a Java Virtual Machine. Have fun. Bilbowolf
  12. The number of wayüpoints does not tell you what distance you can cover. The number does tell you though how much detail you can include in a route. The greater the distance (of the route) the more waypoints you will need for detail. With my etrex I could cover about 300km, BUT travelling a lot on highways. My tip? Buy a GPSr with the cap. to store more than less. For GeoCaching though # of wp / route is rather irrelevant.
  13. Well... no! At least not without any additional hardware. A GPS gadget can only recieve signals, not send them.
  14. quote:Originally posted by Marky: quote:Originally posted by Prime Suspect:Utopia merges on the fly. No additional programs to run. What is Utopia? I've never heard of that program. --Marky "All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr" See here: Utopia thx prime suspect. Didn't know that it was out there. So posting scripts does help
  15. Hi All, here is a perl script to convert multiple loc files into a single file that then can be imported into mapsource open(outfile, ">alle_locs.gpx") || die "Cannot open outfile";printf outfile "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>n<loc version="1.0" src="Groundspeak">n";foreach $FullName (<*.loc>) { open(infile, $FullName) || die "Cannot open infile"; while (<infile>){ s/</waypoint></loc>/</waypoint>/; $Test = $_; $Line = $_; if($Test =~ /<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>|<loc version="1.0" src="Groundspeak">/){ #do nothing print "Filtered $Linenn"; } else { printf outfile "$Line"; } } close (infile); print "Processed $FullNamen";}printf outfile "</loc>n";close(outfile);system('gpsbabel -i geo -f alle_locs.gpx -o pcx -F alle_locs.wpt');open(infile, "alle_locs.wpt");open(outfile, ">locs.wpt");while(<infile>){ s/ 0$/ 8255/; printf outfile "$_";}close(infile);close(outfile); You will have to install perl! Copy the code above into a text file, install gpsbabel in the same directory. Now download as many loc files from gc.com and execute the script. You will get a file called "locs.wpt", voila! Ready for import to mapsource. Have fun
  16. It has nothing to do with your unit. You are encountering the jumpy GPS coords thing. Our units are just not accurate to one foot; about 9 is the best it gets. So once you get very close to a cache it is time tu use common sense to hunt it down.
  17. I like the idea and I would set up these rules: Caches are red photo boxes Each cache has a number and a code. The player (or team) would have to note number and code to register a hit. Each cache also has a pointer to three other caches. There are 3 times as many caches hidden as there are teams (or players). Each registered hit is 1 point. During the run players may collect trash. At the end trash is weighed and acts as a multiplier for the number of registered hits. The games is restricted to one hour (or similar, but restricted) Each team starts at preselected (random) cache (so they doen't all start at the same place... Of course the run itself is enough reward. At the end all come together for a barbecue and drinks We would need a piece of software that shuffles the cache numbers, the pointers to the three next caches and generates the code cache pair. Actually the software is not really required but it would help.
