  1. From my first hand experience I can tell you that it is illegal for an individual who does not possess a license for rapter feathers/parts to possess an feathers or parts from any type of rapter. I had an owl claw that was given to me by a Native American friend that I had hanging on my car rearview mirror. I was informed by the base game warden where I work to remove it from the car. I was also told that any law enforcement officer who saw this hanging in my car could pull me over and search my vehicle because of the illegal rapter claw. Now, I'm not saying that I got rid of my owl claw because I didn't however, it does not leave the house either. I would be careful about placing items like this in a cache. By the way, this applies to bear claws also.
  2. Before ordering your GPS check out www.freshtracksmaps.com. I bought my MAP76S from them and they had the lowest price with excellent e-mail communication and service.

  4. I often wonder if signal strength varies from unit to unit with the same manufacturer. My 76S has been awesome. I can pull WAAS signals while sitting in my recliner in the living room with a vaulted ceiling. I have been under heavy cover (almost crawling) and never lost a signal. I have placed the 76S on the seat of my suburban and it has retained signal contact, so I wonder if performance fluctuates. Any thoughts? One question I have for you Meridian Platinum users; do you have a "hold level" message pop up when using the magnetic compass?
  5. I was in a store yesterday and saw what appears to be an Audiovox version of the Garmin Rhino. Now, I was in a rush and did not the model# however, on the box it said "GMRS/FRS GPS combo" or words to that effect. They were selling for $199.00. Has anyone else seen these? I thought Garmin was the first with this type of "toy".
  6. Decon containers are great. I have about 70 of the things and before geocaching came into my life I used them for all kinds of things. I have used one in a multi-stage cache for about 5 months with no problem. I also have had one on a tree branch for about 8 months giving it the "weather test" and so far no water has entered it. For the record neither of these two have the little gasket.
  7. JC9000, I can't answer your question about the 76S for city navigation however, I can tell you that I have yet to lose a signal under heavy canopy. Yesterday I was hiking to an old aircraft crash site under heavy canopy and did not lose a signal until I placed the 76S into my backpack to retrieve my camera. The 76S is great.

  9. BusBoy; My MeMap did the same thing with the MAP76 and last night with the 76S HOWEVER, it displays properly. No problem with mine adding the personalized screen.

  11. Just went on the GARMIN Website and there is a new update for the 76S firmware. Just downloaded it but have not installed it yet. Check it out.
  12. Jumpmaster, first thanks for pointing out my error in terminology. Something didn't look right when I typed it, but I couldn't place it. Here's my question; If you don't usually use a topo map along with your gps while caching (other than maybe a single page printed from ExpertGPS, etc.) what will the benefit of using UTM or MGRS be?
  13. KD7EAV, This has been discussed in the past and there are some other threads on the subject. You might want to try the search feature to locate them. Just about 10 days ago my office was involved in the removal of a military helicopter that had crashed nearby. We were trying to get a location when someone walked into the office with the coordinates in MGRS. I quickly entered them into my trusty Garmin 76S and we had the location in seconds. As a former Marine I am used to these different datums (somewhat). However, I am always interested in learning different (and hopefully) easier ways of pin pointing my location. Perhaps you will get another discussion going here.
  14. I bought my 76S from freshtracksmaps.com for #377.95 a price I could not beat. Since receiving my 76S about 2 months ago I have yet to lose a signal in the bush. Last weekend I was in brush so thick I had to crawl and never lost a signal. I have not used my external antenna since getting this GPSr because I have'nt needed it. I am continually amazed by the 76S. One "must have" accessory is the case available through the GPS Store for around $14.00. Its great having the see-through plastic window plus the protection.
  15. I too must highly recommend USAPHOTOMAPS. although topo maps are not yet available this is one sweet little program for the geocacher. I use it constantly when planning to hunt or place a cache and believe it or not, it's free!

  17. I usually don't remove stuff from my caches however, about 6 months ago I removed a bottle of rum left by a "church group" from up North. I did'nt think mom or dad would be too happy if their kids found that. Of course, I had to check its purity.

  19. The little "D" that appears on your signal bar indicates that you are receiving WAAS. If you are getting the "D" you should also be receiving Satellite #35 which is the East Coast WAAS Sat. Shut off WAAS in your setup and you will notice that the "D" will not appear and #35 will be gone as well. Hope this helps.
  20. In case you did'nt know about this function I thought I would mention it. If you have UTM, Decimal Degrees, or Degrees-Minutes-Seconds set in your MAP76 or 76S, press the center rocker button while on the satellite viewing screen and you will toggle between one of above selected measurements and Degrees-Minutes-Minutes. Check it out.

  22. DisQuoi, Thanks for placing my comment on the same level as the other notable opinions that have been made in the past. Perhaps the next time "an ignorant and stupid" remark is made, you will be so kind as to add mine to your list. I am impressed that you were able to respond to my remark in less than an hour with such an inventory of comments. Do you keep them handy for times like this or are you planning a book on the subject?

  24. After reading about "Geogamer" here I had to go and take a look. That's all I did. If they are able to stay alive, so be it however, I could not and would not leave Geocaching.com. Although I don't reply to all the threads listed I am on this website probably 10 times a day, reading and learning from others. Jeremy & CO. have done more for this site and geocaching in general than the "gamers" ever could. Hats off to you guys again for all that you do FOR THE FUN & LOVE OF THE SPORT, GAME, PASSTIME, HOBBY.... Can the "geogamers" say that. Probably not.
  25. Today I uploaded some benchmark locations to my 76S via ExpertGPS. When I looked at them on the GPSr I noticed that they were all flags. I also noticed that I don't have flag icons for waypoints on my 76S. So here is the question: How many other "sneaky icons" are lurking about that will show up on the MAP76/76S if given a chance? I would like to be able to add the flag icon. Any way I can keep it for other waypoints or do I need to start pleading to GARMIN? Thanks.
