  1. Wow I wonder what that's all about?? Is it actually WIFI capable? Or maybe it just has the ability to wirelessly share location data with other Garmins in the field? Yup - it is a proprietary wireless system. They have to be within a couple feet of each other and have to be compatable. Shame they aren't wifi. ah well
  2. Two opposite end of the scale for you. Me? I have an Oregon 550 with Canada topo. Camera, compass, waterproof (think camera) big touch screen. Does a hell of a lot of stuff, more than I need really . Kinda pricey tho but very cool. Good Garmin support. My buddy - hardcore GCer. Got a mgellan Explorist GC - loves it to bits but quirks have been reported. Megellan seems to have stepped up to the plate a bit as far a support. Firmware has fixed most of the issues according to my buddy. No camera, no compass, small screen and text but cheap like borsht. Big bang for the bucks if you can live with the config. Both are good in bright sun. In fact the 550 is better in sun than shade which is backwards for most screens. Now I've really made the choices really tough for you Me bad. Ü
  3. Yep, it's running great. Annnd I'm a dunderhead for not noticing the model for the 3.81 beta. Glad it didn't do any damage. The 3.61 has some nice touches - now gimme more, GIMME MORE!! Ü
  4. Well this is confusing. I just got off the phone with Garmin support (good guy) and he walked me through the installing of update Oregon 550 Beta 3.61/4.48 issued June 29. Not 3.81 that was from June 4 shown on the Garmin homepage. I tried the 3.81 and nothing happened. (And you're right GC - webupdater doesn't catch beta's.) The tech guy said that 3.81 is not a working update and took me directly to the 550 support page The 3.61 update seems to work fine with some nice tweaks. Great write speed now - noticably faster. Cache filtering right onboard - works fine for me. Mind you, my queries are already filtered but it's a 'nice to have' thing. Now if they'd bring back the calendar record function a la Map 60 I'd be REALLY happy. And I'm pretty happy as it is. I'll be even happier when my rebate shows up.
  5. Oops sorry - it's a new 550. It still works fine but the beta update did nothing
  6. I ran the beta update and it asked for drive G then it said update complet so restart. No change info page says it's still 3.7. No cache filter, nothing different. What am I doing wrong? I'm running it in spanner mode. Is that significant?
  7. Not a religious man but.... bless Garmin support. That map lable thing was a real P*## o@@ after what I paid for the 550 but all is well (so far) with the new firmware. Good to go.
  8. Also I found if I use mapsource to transfer caches, the info doesn't show up. Howver if I use Basecamp or just drag the gpx files onto the gps, everything shows. I'm just learning this thing. Mines a 550 but I suspect they behave the same.
  9. yet - I've only had it 24 hours but I'm impatient. 1- How do I delete caches from the memory without using Basecamg? You can delete ordinary waypoints from the gps but not caches. 2-it shuts off when I disconnect the usb cable. I want it to stay on.
  10. Hi- I'm using the old GPSmap 60C. The GPSmap 60 is just black and white (I may be telling you what you already know). The 60 would be good value. Antenna works just fine. My brother has the 60csx and it holds a signal a little better in poor terrain but not enough to make up the money difference, to my mind. I bid on a 60 on ebay but lost. I'm sure I would have been happy with it but I'm still pleased with the 60c and got a good deal on it too. As far as your Legend goes - I have the same trouble with mine. Seems to be a connection problem. I just give the screen a squeeze (front to back) and it pesters the screen back to normal.
  11. Etrex yellow - my wife likes it 'cuz it's simple. Legend - kind of beat up now but still works. Good bang for the buck. Garmin GPSMAP 60C - Got it for a steal on eBay. It's one generation off so you can get a good bargain on this great gps. Tough as nails too. I've dropped badly and expected to pay with a broken screen or somesuch but so far so good.
