  1. I just sold my GPSr and got a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S android smartphone. Before I buy the official Geocaching app, can someone tell me how it works? Does this integrate with google maps? I'm going on an extended road trip soon, and will be using the phone as a GPS while driving. It would be cool if I could see caches right on the google map, which I could click to access the cache info in the Geocaching app. Is this how it works? Or does anyone have recommendations for an easy way to do this? Thank you.
  2. Thanks for the info and software suggestions folks! Spring will be here before long, and I'll let everyone know how the phone works!
  3. So I'm fairly new to geocaching, and have been using a Garmin eTrex HCx so far. I just picked up a used HTC XV6800 on Verizon (with NO data plan), and was wondering if I can get away with selling the eTrex. With software such as BeelineGPS, do you guys find that the phone and a premium membership here is the only thing you need? Does anyone here use this model phone for Geocaching? How has it been for you? I'm eagerly awaiting spring so I can test this thing out! Thanks!
  4. My cell contract is almost up, and I can get a nice discount on a new phone with a GPS. My question is, does anyone here actually use a phone for geocaching? (a real GPS, not a 'guess' based on cell tower signals like the iPhone does (I think) I currently have a eTrex Vista HCx, which works great most of the time. However, it would be nice to be able to carry just one device. Here are phones I was looking at that supposedly have true GPSr. HTC Mogul, aka * Alltel HTC PPC6800 * Bell HTC 6800 * Qwest Mogul by HTC * Sprint Mogul by HTC * Telus HTC P4000 * US Cellular HTC PPC6800 * Verizon Wireless XV6800 and HTC Touch/Elf. I'm only looking at Windows Mobile phones, as that is what I must use for work. Thank you.
  5. I am using a Gmail account. I was NOT selecting the current day though. I assumed that "Run query once" would run it right now regardless of what day it is. After selecting the day, I did indeed get my results within seconds. Too bad I missed several good geocaching road trips. Oh well. Now I know for the future! Management - If you're reading this, perhaps the Search screen could be made a little more clear? Or perhaps just a note stating that at least one day must be selected no matter what. Thanks everyone!
  6. I like to take spur-of-the-moment road trips. I recently got into geocaching and subscribed as a premium member here. I am trying to get pocket queries e-mailed to me, but I end up waiting hours, or days, or they never come. Perhaps I am missing the obvious? I use the default settings on the search page. The only option I pick is "Run this query once and delete it". Isn't this what I should be using if I'm going on a road trip. (as opposed to setting up a search at regular intervals at a given location)? Thanks!
  7. I have a eTrex that I have been using for geocaching. I also just purchased a garmin nuvi 200 for my car. I thought that this combination of devices would be very handy for a geocaching road trip. I will be driving 500 miles, stopping to visit several different friends and to geocache with them. What's the easiest way to load caches onto these devices along a route? Should I load one city at a time as I go? Optimally, I'd like to have everything loaded up on my devices and my phone (for paperless) before I hit the road. Any suggestions? (I am a premium subscriber). I'm so excited that spring is here! This will be such a fun trip! Plus, I will be introducing 6 or 7 people to geocaching. Thank you.
  8. Jackpot! After making several phone calls, I found a friend that has an older MetroGuide North America disc his son used before going off to college. He gave it to me for $30, so I purchased a microSD card and I'm tinkering with the software now. I'm probably missing the obvious since I'm used to car GPS units with everything built in....isn't there a way on this handheld to show all 'restaurants' or all 'shopping' on the map, or do I have to go through the "Find" screen all the time? This seems to function a lot different than the car units I've used, which let me turn certain types of waypoints on and off in a flash. Thanks!
  9. Thanks for the suggestions folks! I will look at the options you mentioned. I really just need the roads, and not topographic data (not that I would mind it though!) I should point out that I would like roads so that I can use this GPSr for geocaching when I'm biking and don't have my car GPS to show me the roads. Since I'm fairly new to geocaching, anyone have pointers for how to use this particular unit to the fullest when I'm out on the trail? (Any default configuration settings I should change?) I already have my 'paperless' geocache info on my Windows Mobile smartphone. (Exported .gpx -> .html using GSAK) Thanks again!
  10. I was all excited to go on my first geocaching excursion with my new eTrex Vista HCx. I loaded up a bunch of caches with Pocket Query, and then realized that this GPSr doesn't seem to have many roads on it at all. It only has the main roads! I guess I incorrectly assumed that the device would have most roads, but that I would have to pay for points of interest, etc... What's the best way for me to get non-major roads onto my device? Unless I missed the obvious, I need to buy Citi Navigator with a memory card for $140. Is this correct?! If so, I am very disappointed in this unit already as my Mio car GPS has every road on it, and that entire unit was only $99 for the hardware and the maps! Please tell me there is a free way to get more roads on my Vista! Thanks in advance.
  11. Same problem here with a TomTom One. I literally JUST walked in the door after my first geocaching trip ever. We stayed within a few miles of our house. The driving directions the device gave us were humorously terrible.....we knew we were off to a bad start. After parking the car and getting off the road, we realized that this unit simply does not refresh fast enough for off-road usage. We were waiting minutes for it to update our position and direction, even with 7 satellites, full strength, and no cover above our heads! We found 2 geocaches based on detailed hints, but after we couldn't find the third one, which had no hints, we decided to call it quits. Maybe I'm missing an option, but I couldn't find a way to display how far it is to a waypoint. The device would only tell me how far it was to go back to the road and park closer to the waypoint I think. I got this for $150 refurbished at buy.com and I'm ready to send it right back for a refund. I knew going into this that handheld GPSrs are generally better for off-road, but I thought this would suffice, with the additional bonus of road navigation and maps. Do handheld GPSr refresh much faster than car ones? Maybe I'll just pick up a yellow Garmin eTrex on eBay for $70 and forget the car navigation altogether. What a frustrating day...I was up all night figuring out how to get all the waypoints onto the TomTom, and all the GPX files onto my Motorola Q so I could read the hints, and now after actually trying it, I'm pretty discouraged about Geocaching.
  12. http://www.woot.com Garmin Nuvi 200 GPS for $199.99 I would like a car GPS and a handheld, but I'm wondering if this might suffice for both. They're almost the same exact size - see dimensions vs. an eTrex below: WxHxD: 3.8 × 2.8 x 0.8 Nuvi 200 WxHxD: 4.4 x 2.0 x 1.2 Garmin eTrex Anyone out there use a car GPS for geocaching? I should also point out that this has a rechargeable battery, so no AA batteries would be required. Thanks!
  13. I am interested in geocaching and bought a bluetooth GPS receiver for $30 and assumed I could use it with the MS Streets and Trips 2007 that I purchased. Unfortunately, "Pocket Streets", the phone and PDA version that comes with Streets and Trips, does not seem to work work with this particular phone. Perhaps Verizon disabled it. It looks like my only options are very expensive. ($200 for CoPilot Live software) I should point out that I do not have a data plan, so everything must work offline. Does anyone have a recommendation for GPS software for the Q that doesn't cost as much as a standalone GPS unit? Thank you.
