  1. PP, Both bike rides are over. In fact I'm sitting in the Atlanta airport right now trying to get home to CA after the Erie ride. My cache along a route PQ's worked perfect. You should be able to go to may profile and see logs and pictures from the Missouri ride. The Erie logs will get posted this weekend and next week. Riding 60 miles a day did not lend itself to logging at night. I try hard to take a pic at every find so you will get an idea of the countryside. Sorry I don't blog or have a website. I'm technologically challenged. Maybe I'll ask my kid how to share pics on Instagram.
  2. SGT, thank you for those kind words. I do try to be thoughtful to friends and strangers alike. Paying it forward and random acts of kindness are behaviors I believe in and try to practice consistently. And I, in fact have created several routes. But always on roads where I had had plenty of data and Intel so I knew the track was accurate. In the case of these two trails, I could not be sure I knew exactly where the trail was, so I needed to rely on others. I was so excited to be able to find them both. Especially because I am on a tight time schedule and have my PQ set only to within 1,000 feet of the trail. Just not enough time to be wandering far a field from the trail has I make this jouney. Thank you again for your thoughts. And for you, as well, GOOD HUNTING
  3. I can't begin to thank you both (MO and FM) for stepping up and helping me with the Cache Along A Route feature. The advise from both of you has changed dramatically my future enjoyment that I'm going to have while I bike ride the 300 plus miles of the New York ERIE Canal in October AND also as I bike the 250 mile KATY trail in Missouri the last week of this month. Your help has significantly increased my targets of opportunity during my biking adventure. Thank you again and as always GOOD HUNTING
  4. The caches along a route are not ordered by distance from the route. Instead, the algorithm has some other way (I don't have it completely figured out) to pick out caches that meet your criteria until it has selected as many as you have asked for. Then it stops. Please make sure you have selected the option to return 1000 caches, and then adjust the width of the route (miles on either side) and preview the query until you have less than 1000 caches total in it. At that point, you will see all the caches within the selected distance from the route. I don't know any other way to guarantee that you have caches all along a route you have selected. Yes, I know that it seems like a very labor-intensive way to do it, but it is actually how I do it myself!
  5. If you go to preexisting routes and search by KEY WORD "Erie Canal" you find a 300 mile route from Albany to Buffalo. When I ran a pocket query I end up with scores miles with no caches. Im having trouble attaching a pic, but give it a try
  6. Why can I find no discussion of this GS feature. I had a communication from GS that the feature has bugs but I can't find a FORUM where anyone is discussing it. Please point me to a discussion if its out there some where. Thanks for the help.
  7. Keep telling your friends to post to this request - NOT JUST VIEW IT. Volume may get a Lackey to make a comment as to why or why not GS is not flagging this item as SUGGESTED or SUBMITTED
  8. I could not agree more. I also would like to understand the rational for the sort on the initial results. I searched for caches that included the character string STAR. I got 7700 hits plus - Starting in New Zealand. Page 10 got me to Australia but given I'm in California - that was not much help. How about the initial list being distance from Home coords?
  9. Thanks for the help. I think I'm in the wrong forum.
  10. In the "olden days" - lackeys (in the most reverent and respectful way) were involved in the forums / feedback loops. Are they watching these posts and do they ever step in and make comments. I'm thinking / assuming the "search by name" functionality is low volume use as I can't see where its of any use to anyone. It seems to me this functionality, as it exists, is not practical. It would seem to me they would want to put a functionality out there that people used in earnest.
  11. While I see on the initial results page that there are options to sort by D/T, PLACED or LAST FOUND - how is GC sorting the initial results? On a search for "STAR" I got 7700+ results - with the list starting in New Zealand. (Page 10 shows New South Wales - Australia caches) I'm in California. How does this list help me? Maybe GC could sort the list by home coordinates. PS - I have entered "home coordinates" on my profile page.
  12. I view "SEARCH FOR CACHE BY NAME" almost a key work search but my gripe is that the results are not sorted by "home coordinates" which i feel make the list useless. I'm in CA and I get 1000's of results on a search for STAR - but the list starts with caches in New Zealand. Has the request been made previously that results for SEARCH BY NAME should be sorted differently?
  13. Not sure if what I'm describing is listed above but one then I noticed is that when in satellite view and drill in to max magnification - the cache indicator (treasure chest) disappears. Tested 2 different caches and the "chest" disappeared at different levels of magnification.
  14. Just want to add my 2 cents that the new maps look great and the drill-down capability on satellite view is tremendous. Jeremy - thanks so much for this and the same to all the lackeys that hammered the nails and turned the bolts.
  15. Don - more than willing to continue discussion. (If there is a bug i want to know how to avoid it). I'm running the OLD PQ now to see if it still shows the issue. Do you want to see the image? How can I do that?
  16. I created a new route and PQ and I do not believe I did anything different but it does not have the same issue. I have caches from mile 1 to mile 248. I have an image of the problem so I do believe there is a flaw somewhere in the SW but can not figure out how to attach it. I consider this closed and thanks to all that offered input.
  17. I'm a little concerned about the issue regarding specifying the DISTANCE from the route for caches to be included - in BOTH the ROUTE system and then again in the FILTERING system. I specified 1 distance in the route system and a different distance in the filtering system. Maybe the bug lies there.
  18. re my 9:09 comment "They are suppose to spread them over the entire trip." The point here is to insure the traveler gets caches for the whole trip (every county for example) - The route system should not show EVERY cache but a sampling - over the entire trip. I still think a bug as creep-ed in with recent upgrades. Anyone else - with long ROUTES experiencing anything like this?
  19. I did do some research and this is what GC is saying: Create/Edit a Route There are two ways to create/edit a route. Either select your starting and ending destinations on the map or use the text boxes below to enter a starting and ending point, such as "Seattle, WA" to "Portland, OR" or "400 Broad Street 98109" to "4001 SW Canyon Road 97221". You may use any combination of street address, state/province, country and postal code but each route will be limited to 500 miles / 800 kilometers. If you choose to input data in the text boxes, once you have entered your route, click the "Search" button to see the route on the map below. You will not need to click "Search" if you elect to input the starting and ending points on the map.
  20. My understanding of how the ROUTE system works is that: 1) I think routes need to be under 500 miles, mine is only 248 or so. 2) And this is critical - I asked for 850 caches within 4 miles of my route AND GC IS SUPPOSE TO SPREAD THOSE OVER THE ENTIRE 248. Not just start at mile 1 and stop when 850 is reached. They are suppose to spread them over the entire trip. Anyone with any additional input. My fear is that maybe a bug creep-ed in with recent upgrades.
  21. I created (916) Santa Nella, CA to Peddler Hill, CA (its public) and then created and ran the PQ. But I'm only getting caches over the 1st 100 miles of the route. anyone have any ideas? Thanks
  22. What settings are you choosing under the "Filter Options" section? A common mistake is to select both "I haven't found" and "I have found". No single cache can be both of these, so there will be no results. After you created the ROUTE - did you then select it and "CREATE A POCKET QUERY" (If so look at that PQ and see how you set your selection requirements).
  23. Thanks mpilchfamily. You solved it. Could not see the forest for the trees. (Check the boxes) Just another confirmation that its time for my kids to put me on the ice. As to my reason. I'm doing a 700 mile road trip to the Groundspeak Block Party 8/20. As its over 500 miles I'm flagging D/T and MO/YY placed caches all along my route to fill grid squares and placing them in my BOOKMARK list. I'll then load the loc to GSAK and add some notes I want and print it hard copy. My GPS of choice is a GPSMap60CSX - not great for paperless but the anntenna gets me very close to the container. I guess I could have loaded the BOOKMARK to the GPS and then send them to GSAK - Thanks again for the help.
