  1. I already tried selecting my different detailed maps and just assumed it wasn't working correctly. Since you were successful I thought I'd try deleting the BaseCamp preference file. That did the trick. Working fine now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
  2. Great find. Seems to be an early beta. I can't see secondary roads or landmarks. I like the way they are merging features between RoadTrip and Basecamp. Printing maps is partially enabled, which is a feature I really wanted to see in RoadTrip.
  3. Are you able to keep this beta running? I installed on a MacBook Pro and a desktop G5 and on both it opens an 'Error Log Detected' dialog shortly after launch. Whether or not I report the crash, BaseCamp crashes as soon as I dismiss the dialog window. I tried deleting all the Garmin error logs as well the BaseCamp preferences file, but nothing I have done so far will allow it to run.
  4. Thanks iamasmith. What about the procedure for doing a factory reset? Incidentally, I have a 2GB Sandisk card made in China as well, which is the card that is causing me problems. I will downgrade the firmware for now as I don't have a card larger than 2GB and don't see any other advantages to 3.90. Not sure how this speaks to future updates if we have to worry about the country of origin for our memory cards.
  5. I'm having the same never ending beep problem as iamasmith when powering down with a 2GB card installed. Doesn't happen with a 64MB card. Where can I find instructions for doing a factory reset and downgrading the unit software to version 3.70? I am using a Mac.
  6. Put the cradle on first, then plug in the cable. Works fine. Reverse to disassemble, cord first, then cradle.
  7. I just tested this for you. Ejecting the mounted volume causes the volume to dismount and the 60CSX to exit mass storage mode just like you'd expect. It doesn't try to remount. I'm on Leopard 10.5.2 and have the latest firmware on the GPSr (3.60/3.00). Seems like this was a problem with previous firmware and/or operating system. It's handy to be able to go to USB Mass Storage mode directly from the 60CSX but it's slow as molasses when your trying to transfer large files since the 60CSX does not support USB 2.0. If you want to transfer large amounts of data, like maps, I suggest using an external USB 2.0 or firewire card reader. You can get a real good one for under $20. What operating system are you on and are you sure you have the latest firmware on your 60CSX? Fred
  8. I'm running Bobcat on my 15 inch PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz with 10.5.2 and 2GB RAM. No crashes. Try deleting the Bobcat preferences. If that does not fix the problem you should send your crash log to the Bobcat feedback page with a description of what is happening. Fred
  9. Fixed in the latest beta. Garmin posted 2.0.0.2 yesterday.
  10. Is anyone using a USB car charger designed for iPod or iPhone to power their GPSr? I asked Garmin tech support if it was okay to do so and got a 'not recommended' response, which in retrospect was probably the only answer they could give me. I've seen posts that the Garmin car charger is awkward to use (difficult to plug/unplug) and having one charger that works with my iPhone and GPSr would be very convenient.
  11. You might reread my post as I also never mentioned a Powerbook of any type. I do not, and have never owned one. It would appear the comment about the Powerbook was directed to the original poster, who did mention a Powerbook. A brand new one, in fact. Ok lets not be dorks about the powerbook thing. I guess it is a brand new macbook pro... my bad. Again I know next to nothing about computers which is why I came here, hoping someone nice would help me. thank you all for the helpful information. I use a new Garmin etrex legend cx. I am still confused though. Can I download actual trail maps onto this unit or is it done by waypoints and will those show over a topo map if I get one of those on a card. Do I need other software to do this or what. I am worse off than I thought I guess. Any more help would be great. My wife figured out how to get geocaches downloaded using geojournal but that is as far as we have gotten. nate Nate, Earlier in this thread I posted some basic information about Macintosh mapping options for Garmin handhelds. I have a 60CSX that is similar to your unit, but it has some extra features. In any event, you have a basic map that is included in the unit. Garmin provides additional, more detailed maps that you can purchase and install on your memory card. The Topo maps provide elevation and contour data and most roads, but is more suitable for hiking and other outdoor activities. The City Navigator maps are street maps and data on points of interest such as gas stations, highway exits, lodging, places to eat, etc. With the City Navigator maps you can also get more detailed auto routing. In other words, you can select a destination and then let the GPSr calculate a route and guide you to your destination. This is not practical with the included base map in the unit because it is not detailed enough (too few roads). Unfortunately the thread got sidetracked and you may not have seen the info. If it happens again just email me and we can take this offline. There is some very helpful information for beginners on the Garmin website at: http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual....amp;product=All If this link doesn't work go to Garmin/Support/Manuals and select Other as the market and all documents. These publications helped me a great deal when I first started. You can purchase Topo or City Navigator on DVD or on MicroSD cards. It is much better to purchase the DVDs but you will need to wait until Garmin provides software (hopefully next week at MacWorld Expo) to transfer the maps using your Mac without having to use a PC, or you can do it now with existing software but you need access to a Windows operating system. The SD cards work fine but if you get the DVDs you can transfer only the maps you need and you don't have to worry about shuffling and keeping track of a lot of SD cards. You can purchase a 2GB card for under $40 (I've seen them for as low as $20 on Amazon.com). You can load all of City Navigator NT and one third of the US Topo map on a 2GB card and still have room left for logging tracks. This can be a little overwhelming at first, but you will catch on quickly. I encourage you to download the Garmin publications. They are very nicely done. And be sure to keep your eyes peeled next week. I think we will finally be seeing some new Mac software from Garmin. Fred
  12. Mapsource is a PC only application and will not run on your Mac unless you are running Windows on your Mac. In order to do that you have to run Boot Camp (included with Leopard) and a copy of the Windows operating system (which you need to purchase), or an emulator like Parallels Desktkop, which you would need to purchase. On the Mac you transfer the maps to your handheld mapping unit using MapInstall for Macintosh, which is available on the Garmin site at: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download.jsp. However, as was pointed out, you first need to convert your maps on a PC using mapconverter (another PC application). Once converted, you can then use Garmin Mapinstall for Mac to install the maps to your GPSr directly from your Mac. If you have an automotive unit then I believe you can install the newest City Navigator maps directly. The instructions are on the Garmin Blog (Chet's Corner) at: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download.jsp According to Chet Garmin is releasing Mac software at MacWorld Expo next week. If Garmin is providing a Mac equivalent to mapsource for the PC then all of the above will become unnecessary. The Garmin software is the only way to move maps onto your GPSr. There are other Mac programs for working with waypoints, tracks, and routes, which can transfer them to and from your GPSr. Many are free or very inexpensive and in my experience, work very well. Let us know which GPSr you have and what you want to do with it and we can help. Fred
  13. Has anyone had problems installing WebUpdater for Mac version 2.0.2? On the "Installation Type" step I get a dialogue box saying "You cannot continue. There is nothing to install." I've had version 2.0.1 installed and working for months. I'm running 10.4.11 on a 1GHz PowerPC G4. Even tried removing version 2.0.1 before the install and still won't work. Any ideas? Thanks. The earlier version installed a receipt that is incorrectly labeled 2.1 instead of 2.0.1. If you delete the receipt files in /Library/Receipts that begin with 'Install Garmin Webupdater' you should be good to go. Fred
  14. If you set the altimeter to fixed elevation you can view the log later as previously posted. However, if you want to see the GPS altitude during the flight, all you have to do is go to the satellite page, hit the MENU button and then select GPS Elevation. Fred
  15. If it keeps popping up you may have the slider in the open position. If I recall correctly, you slide the metal cover toward the top of the unit, which then pops up to allow access to the card. Then, when you are sure the card is seated correctly, push the metal tab down and slide it toward the bottom of the unit. Mine was kinda tight when I first tried it and I didn't slide it all the way for fear of breaking it. Perhaps yours is the same. I may have the directions reversed but at any rate, the procedure is correct. If the tab is up, press it down and slide it until it locks in place. You may want to try it first without the card. Fred
  16. Has anyone been successful installing maps directly from the full version City Navigator NT 2008 DVD to a 60CSX using Mapinstall 2.0.0.1 beta? I was told by Garmin tech support that installing directly from the DVD from a Macintosh is only supported on units that don't have memory cards such as the Nuvi. According to them it is still necessary to convert the maps first using a PC. I am contemplating buying it, but since I don't have access to a PC, this is a deal breaker for me.
