  1. Yes, totally understood. And I hope my reply didn't sound mean or anything. I didn't intend for it to sound that way if it did. The internet is so hard that way sometimes. When I first read it, I thought you didn't want your kids exposed to any kind of negativity, which happens all through life. Your kids sound pretty cool and handled it well. I understand about your child with autism needing a little more explaining. I'm not really in favor of hiding find counts, but I can relate to people who feel that way. I know it's curiosity, but it seems the first question people ask is, "How many finds do you have?" Unfortunately, that can lead to people forming opinions about someone solely based on a number...sometimes before they've even met them I recognise good intentions when i see them Thank you he is a handfull but fortunately sarcasm etc completely misses him as does subtly humour If another cachers asks how many have you found ? id love to reply "its private" knowing they cant go home and look it up for the next time i meet them, simple problem simple solution.
  2. I know how but its ache of a job and if you do to many it breaks, and then it goes KBI broke the quote thingy KBI broke the quote thingy KBI broke the quote thingy KBI broke the quote thingyKBI broke the quote thingyKBI broke the quote thingy as an ex cheers regular would know ;
  3. What makes you think you have to explain anything? That’s what I don’t understand. I like Skippermark's analogy. It leads me to ask you this: How would you respond if another cacher were to tease you about the relative value of your car versus his? I don't know about you, but I would never sell or even conceal my car just to avoid a childish comment from a nitnoid. Even if I had a car-cloaking invisibility switch I could turn on and off, which is what this proposal amounts to, I wouldn’t use it for that. I say screw anyone who is displeased with my find count. I don’t owe anybody ANY explanations as to why my number is whatever it is. Why would you want to dignify such idiocy by allowing it to cause you to change your own behavior? Why let someone shame you into hiding your caching record? It denies them battleground before the battle starts. If another cachers asks how many have you found ? id love to reply "its private" knowing they cant go home and look it up for the next time i meet them, simple problem simple solution. This not about cars or lawns its about wanting to make my profile on this website hidden from all but my friends like most other web sites allow which have a profile facility. To see my car or my lawn you have to know where i live and if you know that im going to get quite worried
  4. Just to clarify im not ranting above,(i hope) my original post was short and the interpretations given are kind of obvious after re reading! The "Kindness" of all the replies was not lost on me. Many thanks for thinking of me and my children (all of you) nb Note the last line of my signature It's the character of a cacher and not the find count that impresses me most about someone
  5. quote 'KBI' date='Dec 11 2009, 04:33 PM' post='4154746' For KBI's information i do care deeply what other people think about me, having been told by my children that they were teased at school because we dont have as many finds as another local caching family I therefore have an extra special reason for wanting to remove my stats from the website. Is that the way you teach your kids to deal with teasing? To run away from it? You are teaching your kids to give those teasers way more respect than they deserve, in my humble opinion. Did i say my kids were giving them respect ? they ignore them the fact that the other children thought they were superior to them is the issue its the other parent who has a problem but it still happened saying ignore them does not take the event away it still happened because no of finds has been seen as a score to get higher than others. And don’t forget, you are encouraging the teasers as well. Nope in this thread im highlighting that this actually happened. Please, please, please consider an alternate approach. Teach to your kids that their find count is not a score by carefully educating them as to them why it can't be used as a meaningful comparison. Explain to your kids that those teasers are only making themselves sound ignorant by treating it otherwise. Tell to your kids that a negative reaction to teasing only encourages more teasing, but that ignoring it will make it go away. Allready done for the older two who are fine and well ballanced, the fact they came home and said "guess what dad xxx tried to tease me today because our find count is less than thiers" what did you do girls ?? "laughed at him and said we had better things to do than find boring caches all day every day" and then proceeded to ignore him. but in the case of my partiatially autistic son its a bit harder to teach this. Tell them to consider those suggestions while looking at the situation from the teasers’ point of view. That seems to be an effective way to clarify the concept in a child’s mind – works well with my kids, anyway. Just a friendly suggestion from a fellow parent. ----------------------------------cant do multi quotes that well--------------------------- Many thanks ive filled in more detail, the fact it happened in the first place is what concerns me, encouraging the attitude of finds = score can be eliminated by hiding find counts, or growing a thicker / tolerant skin. lets see which is easier a - change your outlook on life and other people b- add the option to hide your profile on the website Why should i have to explain my find count and why im not bothered about it to anyone wether it bothers me or not ? removing find counts eliminates the need for the conversation in the first place thats whats being asked for. I have a public profile on ebay but i can make it private, i have a public profile on steam but again it can be private, were just asking for the same website funcionality here as well. Guess its become more normal to have the option on websites that store profile information to make it private thats whats being asked for here.
  6. Id like to keep my find counts private as would a few of my caching friends who dont use these forums. For KBI's information i do care deeply what other people think about me, having been told by my children that they were teased at school because we dont have as many finds as another local caching family I therefore have an extra special reason for wanting to remove my stats from the website.
  7. Wow this discussion is everywhere http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q...mp;aq=f&oq= http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=383695 As an aside to the google street view stuff mentioned by Steamtrain that wont tell you patrol patterns, which way cctv faces, what shop fronts etc overlook your spot etc.
  8. Indeed. But generally to get remanded, you have to be accused of something pretty substantial. In the OP of this thread, we've seen one stop-and-search, and one 20-minute trip to a police van - the difference being that in the second case, the photographer declined to give his name, always guaranteed to wind up law enforcement personnel everywhere. Doubtless the decision to stop and question these individuals was overzealous, but we're not exactly seeing people banged up in Wandsworth for half a year while waiting for their cases to be cleared. You can't be kept at a police station for more than 24 hours without being charged. add time at scene of alledged crime, time in transit your up to nearly two days.
  9. That's what I would call 'dipping', i.e. dropping off the TB and retrieving it immediately, I wasn't suggesting a separate log is required to do it. Ive edited my post to clarify, lots of people post TB dropped / dipped logs these days as extra notes on cache pages.
  10. People dont need to dip use a completely separate log for dropping tb's into caches, you can just drop them in with the cache found log and then retrive them, no need for a separate log ever. edited for enahnced clarity
  11. Burying a cache in the Park is actually an offence both under the Royal Parks Regulations and the Wildlife and Countryside Act. How on earth did they get the idea that they are buried ???? That is not a nice letter despite the Sorry at the end
  12. OK sounds like you had a contamination / softener issue. 1. Clean out the softener draw of all traces of fabric conditioner. 2. Using a waterproof washing liquid to wash some items like your fleeces. we use this http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/produ...php?productid=4 2. Use the same washing liquid to wash all your waterproofs. 3. Use a wash in waterproofer to waterproof the fleeces. we use http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/produ...mp;activityid=1 4. Use the wash in waterproofer to waterproof your waterproofs 5. Iron your waterproofs. The main issue with rewaterproofing is left over detergent and fabric conditoner from before, we usually run an empty cycle through the washing machine before hand just to make sure. Running our fleeces through helps remove the last traces of old detergent. Your main issue now will be removing the softener from your waterproofs. The above always works for us on a berghaus and montane coat, plus the cheaper kids stuff, waterproof trousers, hats etc etc.
  13. Was tom tom killed from running or just closed ? i often find applications dont stop on these when you close them and you have to kill then from the running programs list.
  14. Yes there was it was run by team maddie and i owned the yahoo group (still do) but as the postage issues from the usa started to go away and removed the need to bulk buy it got disbanded. Its now just as cheap to go direct or buy from UK and european caching shops. It basically got better when none US people started getting their own coins made and US coin sellers had to trade on a parity basis. The best way to obatain loads of coins is still to create your own exchange only coin which is only available by swapping. nb. if an admin could remove the pinned link to the geocoin club i would appreciate it as i cant log in anymore to delete the group etc.
  15. Or you could just buy them from ww.ukgeocachers.co.uk
  16. Heh that really odd i follow it from your profile then click on the created link and end up at another profile. http://www.geocaching.com/profile/default....a1-26bfc6a1f02d The drop down box for 200 is a new addition for the website using it i can see all the 95 caches on this bookmark list. Edit to add if i could vote i would also ask you to untick the box make viewable to all, leave it shared and add a link on your profile page. At present all visitors to the cache pages see your FTF list. I believe the wording on the bookmark list page is not clear enough so this is quite a common issue.
  17. But it now takes you two hours of sitting at a pc to locate them. The site needs to do more on the classification of caches and help people refine thier PQ's so they can go out rather than spend hours filtering and reading cache pages. An afinity rating or classifying caches into groups, long walk 1 smiley, drive by, fiendish puzzle, night cache, long walk multiple smileys, group series caches into one pq etc etc. Series like motorway mayhem help with this but the site certainly does not help you eliminate them, other than using Premium Memebrship and GSAK and the rather clunky add one at a time ignore list function. But seeing as offline databases are not supported this will probably remain a sticking point.
  18. Ive found that above D4T4 there is little difference. A 4/4 can just as easily be a 5/5. Understanding local variations helps as terrain and difficulty is relative to the area being cached in. Some caches become easier over time as the logs build up as well but the orignal rating should remain IMHO.
  19. Thats harder than some of those 5/5's fun to do as well lots and lots of really deep rock pools on the way or the sea if you misstime it !
  20. Physically the most challenging we have done is the death of power in scotland alongside waterfall and ruin. Out of the ten 5/5's we have done only a few deserve the rating Race the clock (bath) stands out as the best of the lot but its archived now closely followed by Trek to the Severn (sadly missed) Treasure Island mentioned above certainly felt more 5/5 than some other 5/5's we have done.
  21. Hmm staffordshire, 5/5, rock face. Is it this one ? Dont look down There is no need to abseil here's a Nine year old retrieving it.
  22. I wish they would actually improve how easy it is to use. For example id like to ignore all caches of certain types all the time not just iff i selected ignore on The current system relies on individually clicking each one which takes an age. We have quite a lot on our ignore list its usefull but not easy to maintain / look after we sometimes end up having part of a large series on ignore and have to manually find it etc.
  23. Perhaps if they were in the pq's after a certain time period had elapsed to allow the owner to delete bogus logs, eg 6 or 12 months ? maybe even a tick box for the owner to say this person did find the cache. Alternatively email the owner and ask for there gpx file for your records ??
  24. Last weeks of the school holidays major holiday period.
  25. Another re vote for this too many trails of micros 600 feet apart appearing arround here and were now talking of 400 + clicks on my mouse to ignore the larger power "type" trails. I use the "type" cause we all know power trails are not allowed right ?
