  1. I don't actually think I'm getting far enough to say the problem is with Cachemate. I cannot get the QuickInstall on my original Zire72 software to work, and I cannot get the beta version Palm provides as a "fix" for Vista to install correctly. It won't open, gets hung up and freezes.
  2. Since Christmas, when I got my new GPSr, I've been trying to figure out this paperles caching. My GPSr works fine with my Vista OS, and my Palm Zire 72 worked fine with my Vista. Problem is trying to get Cachemate installed so I can go paperless. I've installed and uninstalled Palm software, Cachemate, many times only to hit another roadblock. Is there anyone who has this setup and has been able to get everything to work? If you're not using Cachemate, what are you using. By the way, I forgot to mention that I also use GSAK, and usually just upload and download to GPSr...this works fine. I just wanted to have more information with me, that I thought I could download to my Palm. Help please?
  3. It sounds like you have some good information, but I don't have a clue what you're talking about. Where do you insert these codes? I was just logging in here to find out why GSAK doesn't have the correct dates for the caches I download. It will leave the date found blank when it's been found, it will show the date placed as today's date but it was placed a year ago, etc. This topic you wrote about is something I'd like to do too.
  4. That's neat. I don't think the new one has a screen with all that information; at least I haven't found it. Thanks for the opportunity to input--usually I lurk or ask for help, it was nice to "think" I knew what I was talking about, for a little while.
  5. Let me clarify first: you have the Legend HCx? That's what I have and I've only had it since Christmas. I did find how to put my name on the welcome screen though. I pressed the menu button twice to get to the Main Menu. Toggle down to Setup and press Enter (the little toggle button) Then you're on the Setup Menu. Toggle to Headings, then toggle down once more to Welcome Message. THEN press Enter on Welcome Message. The icon doesn't show up on the first screen with all the other icons.
  6. Thank you! You were absolutely right! I assume, then, that since I have no maps loaded on the GPS yet, I should always choose off-road until I have roads to use? When I get maps uploaded to it I can use the follow road feature?
  7. Main Menu Setup Welcome Message (you have to scroll down past Heading)
  8. Took my Legend HCx out into the bush today; found two out of three. However, I pushed a button/setting and now my GPS constantly, I repeat-constantly, is recalculating. It's annoying the heck out of me. Of course, I can get it to stop by telling it to stop navigating; but then it's not doing its job. Everytime I select a waypoint and tell it to GO TO, it immediately calculates and continues calculating while we're moving. HELP????
  9. Main Menu Setup Map Third icon over (Map Setup - Points) On this screen, is User Waypoints. See if you've turned them "Off"
  10. Thank you. I guess I was sort of looking for "processes" used to find the cache. Do you use the compass page to get you there, or the highway page? Do you have the proximity alarms set for certain settings, etc. I appreciate you help.
  11. I got a Garmin Legend HCx for Christmas and have been searching this forum and the www for suggested "settings" people use for geocaching. Since I cannot find more than one suggestion, I am asking here. I am interested in knowing what pages you use (Highway, Compass, Routes, Tracks, etc) and what settings for each of those settings. This is my very own GPS (use to use husband's) and I am finally totally free to set it up like I want it--I just don't know how I want it. There are so many settings for this GPS that it makes my head swim. I'm guessing I don't need to use them all, but am real interested in how you use yours. I also have GSAK and thought it'd be real cool to have all caches on my GPS that are within 20 miles of my house. (I live 1/4 mile from a big lake and river.) Needless to say, I couldn't see anything with all the geocache symbols on top of each other. So I turned the user waypoints off. That took care of the clutter but I don't know that this is the thing to do. So, it's questions like this that I'd love to have some input on from more experienced users. By the way, did I say that I live in Iowa and it's been about 20 degrees, windy and snowy since Christmas. It's too cold to go by experience alone to figure this out, so thanks in advance for any help you can share.
  12. Please take a look at this article published in the Des Moines register yesterday. It sounds just like a geocache but it doesn't have any identification and I cannot find it on geocaching.com. Isn't this an awesome container? Fluke
