  1. After receiving no input in the forums, and NO response to requests for help from gc.com people, I took the time to go thru my email with a fine tooth comb. I found the problem with the watch lists. They arrive with the from field being "nonreply@geocaching.com" I found a filter for another site with the same word, nonreply, in the from field. Even though the rest of the address was different, the presence of that word made the difference. THe email filters blocked ANY email with that same word. Once I removed that blocked address, the watchlists began again. Therefore, should anyone else experience the same problem, get out your fine tooth comb.
  2. I looked thru the threads and could not find this one there. My watch lists do not come thru. I checked my spam and filter controls {actually deleted them all}. I added a filter that anything with "geocaching" or "geocache" in the from and subject fields be sent to my inbox. I get email and pocket queries thru geocaching.com yet any postings on my watch list do not. Any ideas? GC.com can you help?
  3. I could not find this topic in the strings. My watch list does not seem to work. I have not been getting notifications of loggings by other cachers. I double checked my email service and my spam controls are not including GC.com. Any ideas out there?
  4. Like others who have posted here before, I too, read the postings religiously when I first started this hobby. {Or should I say compulsion.} I found the postings informative and helpful. However, I was put off by the individuals who post remarks slamming others, being offensive in their replies to fellow geocachers. I found the postings to be not only boring, but counterproductive and unnecessary to the furtherance of everyone's enjoyment of geocaching. This is the first time I have been back to the forums in months and I only came here as I have a question about service. My word of advice to others, if you don't have an inquiry, or you have a response that is less than helpful, don't waste the bandwidth with your garbage. It does not belong here. Admin- your job is to see that the threads don't lose sight of the original objective. Thank you.
  5. Any Northern California geocacher heading to Australia? Found a travel bug that wants to go there.
  6. I have possession of a TB that has a goal to travel to Australia. It is in California now. My friend just cancelled her trip to Australia, so I am looking for someone else who is traveling there to carry the TB. Please email me if you are planning a trip soon, or know someone who is. Thanks.
  7. I, too, am looking for an Australian in the Sydney area for purposes of movig a travel bug. I just found one here in California, USA that has the goal to go to Australia. I have a friend going there in May and we would like to know of some caches in the Sydney area where she can drop off the bug. She will be on a tour, and have limited opportunity which will require her to use public transportation to get to the cache. Can anyone there help? Thanks in advance, InspGadget from California.
  8. I don't think the UFWS can speak for the National Forest Service. They are all separate agencies. The UFWS and NPS are part of the Dept of the Interior. The National Forest Service is part of the Dept of Agriculture, two distinctively different agencies with much different missions.
  9. How about sending one of those my direction? InspGadget {from California} quote:Originally posted by geospotter:I'd be happy to send you some geocaching logo temporary tattoos so you could try it out first.
  10. My computer guru friend and I will work on this one. Steve quote:Originally posted by Gulf Coast Riders:Well, perhaps I spoke too soon. The next time I tried to auto connect, the error message: "Trying to connect to serial port COM 3" came up. The Autodetect under communications Options is set for COM Port 1, but no matter what I try, the auto detect reverts to COM 3. Any suggestions? Paul
  11. I have found that my laptop with its USB connection to the Garmin is much faster than the same Garmin hooked to my Desktop computer via the serial port. quote:Originally posted by MaxEntropy:
  12. I took your suggestion and it worked. Thanks. Radio Shack had the cable. quote:Originally posted by CWL: quote:Originally posted by MidnighToker:Make sure that you have a serial port on the laptop. If it doesn't have one, you can add one, but that can get messy. quote:Originally posted by InspGadget:Any ideas what I should do. I have a laptop with usb port, plug in my computer but the software does not see a com port, therefore it cannot find the garmin. Have yet to figure out a solution. 13. Solution found for laptop with no com port: One of you posted a solution of obtaining a USB-Serial port cable to attach the Garmin to the laptop via the usb connection. I found one at radio shack, Windows XP loaded the hardware successfully and now my laptop, using Mapsource, can detect the Garmin. Thanks for the suggestion. quote:Originally posted by InspGadget:I have a Dell Laptop, that will not detect my Garmin Vista using Mapsource. I found the same with my desktop, but have found a way by making changes to the com port. However, my laptop shows NO com port, just the LTP. Anyone have an idea what I should do? This has one of my computer guru friends stumped too!

I have a laptop with usb port, plug in my computer but the software does not see a com port, therefore it cannot find the garmin. Have yet to figure out a solution. InspGadget. Let me clarify this question. I have the Mapsource software. I want to be able to use that software with my laptop, so when on the road, I can download maps to my Garmin Vista. However, the laptop cannot detect the presence of the Garmin when I hook it up via the serial port. I had this same problem with my desktop and I found the solution to this problem with my desktop computer was to change a setting for the com port. On the laptop, no com port is there, only the lpt port for the printer. I am looking for ideas how to get the laptop to detect the Garmin.

  17. quote:Originally posted by geosync:Unfortunately I have not had the same luck. I don't even get the resource tab unless I click on the LPT1 setting. I tried changing the auto settings there but still had no luck connecting to my Magellan. Unfortunately, I have to use a USB to serial converter since my laptop has no serial port. Could this be my problem ? Very frustrating since I cannot take advantage of any of the direct download from my Gps. I am still working on that one. My laptop does not show a com port, and I have the same issue. Do not dispar, my computer gurus will come up with something. I want my laptop to work with my garmin so I can take them on the road. More to follow as I come up with a solution. InspGadget
  18. Did you ever find a source for Inspector Gadget toys? I have had the same thought. InspGadget from California
  19. When I first went to use Mapsource with my Garmin, my computer was unable to detect the COM Port for the GPS. Here are instructions for adjusting your computer. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties". This window will pop up. Click on the "Hardware" tab. This window will come up: Click "Device Manager" and when the window opens expand the "Ports (COM & LPT)" device area. You should see at least one communications (COM) port listed. Click once/highlight on Communications Port (COM1) device, right click and choose "Properties" Click on the "Resources" tab Uncheck the "automatic settings" box. (So that the "settings based on" box will not be grayed out) Click on the arrow to the right of "Current Configuration" to get the drop down menu. Scroll down and select "Basic Configuration 0000" Click "OK" If you haven't started the Garmin application, start it and have it "auto detect" the GPS. If it still does not, go thru the above steps and select the next configuration setting "Basic Configuration 0001" . Then try to auto detect again. However it worked for me the first time.
