  1. I came across that issue with one of my friends Oregon 200. We re-formatted the SD card while in the unit and the problem went away. The batteries I am using are the garden variety Energizer rechargeables that I bought at Walmart. I'm thinking of giving BirdEye a try. But, it makes me mad that I would have to buy two subscriptions in order to use it with my wife's GPS and mine. Garmin doesn't seem to give us a break with their map products.
  2. I'm interested. By the way, you know you can do screen captures on the Oregon, right? Go to setup, enable screen capture. Tap the power button to capture the screen. Screens stored as JPEG in \Garmin\scrn of your Garmin drive. When you power off, it reverts back to screen capture disabled. I was going to mention the POIs, but Triple Crown beat me to it. I finally got a chance to really use it today and the screen is definitely brighter. I usually have my GPS hanging from the bikini top strap in my Jeep. Today, the sun was blaring on the screen and it was much brighter than on my old Oregon 300, or my wife's Oregon 200! I can't see why anyone would buy anything other than this unit right now. Calibrating the 3D compass requires a few more steps. But, it does work very well after that. I'm not much into using the electronic compass because I never seem to have a need for a compass. Besides I always carry an old Army compass with me. As for everything else, the 450 works just like all other Oregon's, and Dakota's. I love the touchscreen and the paperless geocaching. If there are any specific screen captures that you want to see, let me know.
  3. Get it outdoors and start working with it, and if your memory of using your 300 is fairly sharp, you'll see a couple of differences pretty quickly. Okay. I guess the screen is a bit brighter. Actually, it almost seems like the resolution was bumped up. There is some advertising on my GPS now too. I noticed that when my City Navigator NT2010 is enabled (I used the same map on my Oregon 300), I see icons for Carls Jr., Staples, Wells Fargo, Starbucks, Walgreens, and others when I'm zoomed in about 300 ft, or so. I'm not sure if that will be useful. But, it is there. I remember never seeing (the screen) a difference between my Oregon 300 and my wife's Oregon 200. But, now that I sat my 450 next to her 200, I do see a difference. Whatever Garmin did to the screen on the Oregon 450 was definitely for the better! To be honest though, I never had any complaints about our Oregon 200, or Oregon 300 screens. If it was ever hard to see the screen, I would just automatically tilt the unit until the screen was legible (clear). If anyone is interested, I'll post any new improvements that I notice here.
  4. I finally replaced my stolen Oregon 300 with an Oregon 450. I already had my marine, topo, custom maps, and pocket queries with 5k geocaches ready to go on a SD card. So, it was not a pain getting started again. I'm hoping to go out and do some geocaching today. So far, I don't see a difference between a 300 and a450, except for the 5k limit for geocaches.
  5. The Garmin Oregon 450 can be purchased for about $300 (after rebate) at many authorized Garmin stores.
  6. I've used an Oregon 200, Dakota 10, and an Oregon 300 until it was stolen recently. The Dakota 10 was a little brighter in direct sunlight. But, the Oregon's have much higher resolution screens. They make the topo maps really stand out. I ordered a 450 to replace my stolen unit and I am very confident that it will surpass my expectations. I am looking forward to the brighter screen, although I never complained about it before, and the 5,000 geocache capability with full paperless geocaching ability. The only thing it will be missing for me is the capability to make phone calls. I didn't order the 450t because I already have topo maps from Garmin and GPSFiledepot. Oh, I've used my Oregon's, and Dakota's, while hiking, mountain biking, jeeping, and city navigating. I've never used a Nuvi GPS because I need something rugged that won't break the first time I drop it, or get it wet.
  7. The best place to get information about a Garmin Oregon can be found here: Garmin Oregon Wiki
  8. Because my Garmin Oregon 300 was stolen two weeks ago. But, I am waiting for an Oregon 450 which is back-ordered. So, all hope is not lost.
  9. You must want to start a geek war by asking this question. Everyone here seems to be very partial to whatever they are using. Personally, I would spend a little more and get a Garmin Oregon. You won't regret it. Since the Garmin Oregon 450 is on the market now, I wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing the Garmin Oregon 300 discounted pretty soon. If you get an etrex, get an HCx version. I used a Garmin Legend HCx and it worked great until it was stolen.
  10. Congratulations! I fondly remember my first geocache find. Ahh, the memories. It's nice to have nurses in our bunch. My wife is a nurse and she goes by the screen name of NurseDelFuego. Happy Caching!!!
  11. I've been having this issue since Friday. It has happened to old queries that I changed to 1000 and new ones that I've created. I click on them on the "Pocket Queries Ready For Download" tab and they disappear. The error I get is, "Sorry, the requested Pocket Query download is no longer available." This is starting to get very frustrating and annoying because a query gets used up and I end up with nothing! Okay, I feel better now that my queries are running okay. I did have an asterisk at the beginning of my queries. I am not sure if that was the problem because I renamed them and they seem to be running okay now. It blows that I lost 15 or so queries over the last few days. Oh well, at least I am going to be running less queries now because of the new 1000 geocache limit. Thanks GC.com!

  13. I am having the following error with the pocket queries: Sorry, the requested Pocket Query download is no longer available. I have run about seven pocket queries and only three of them have worked. The queries have been ones that I have been running for months. The only thing that I did was change them from 500 to 1000 geocaches. I created a new one and had the same issue. Does anybody know when this will be corrected.
  14. What's a VOMP? Well, the wife just approved the purchase of the new 450. The bad thing is that I have to start a diet in order to buy it. Luckily, I like the flavor of most SlimFast shakes.
  15. Oh my gosh. Another Garmin has gone missing from my household. Almost three years ago I started off with a Garmin Legend (black and white). I had it only a few months when my wife sold it at a garage sale by accident for about $5.00. Then, I got a Garmin Legend Hcx which was stolen only a few months later from my Jeep at the local college. So, I replaced that one with a Garmin Oregon 200. Then, I bought my wife a Garmin Dakota 10 and she lost it while going on a walk. She did cry when she lost it. So, I decided to buy a Garmin Oregon 300 and gave her my Garmin Oregon 200. That was about three months ago. Last week, I parked my Jeep with my Oregon 300 in the driveway for 25 minutes and someone jacked it. Jeez! I don't even want to add up how much all of the units cost. But, I don't care, I've worked steadily the last month so I am officially in the market for another GPS. I think I'll try a Garmin Oregon 450 this time. Garmin Legend $29, Garmin Legend Hcx $159, Garmin Dakota 10 $200, Garmin Oregon 300 $285, and a Garmin Oregon 450 will set me back $350...I better order it before my wife gets home! Who said that geocaching is a cheap sport????????
  16. My wife, and a couple of our good friends, now love to geocache! :-)
  17. This thread only allows happy geocaching thoughts. My first happy geocaching thought is: I am happy that all of my pocket queries have run this morning and are loaded up on my GPSr.
  18. If I may so bold as to disagree... most of us still have fun geocaching, they just make the forums visits less pleasurable than it could be. I stand corrected and agree. I still have fun geocaching.
  19. Some of the posters to this thread need to get a life. You guys come across as forum bullies and seem to suck the fun out of geocaching.
  20. How do I convince my wife that we NEED one of these.
  21. No, it is not true. It only exists for the purpose of comic relief. And it isn't particularly good at that either. I setup a virtual cache there.
  22. I better take note of this just in case I have similar issue in the future. Thanks for the info.
  23. Just kidding. It's only boring when there isn't enough time to go out and find some. I've been a little too busy lately and my stats are starting to suffer. I am going to have to pick up the pace this summer, if I am ever going to reach 1000 finds this year.
  24. x5 on the 450. I own a 200, which I gave to my wife, and a 300 which I use. The 450 will have a slightly better screen, a better compass, and best of all, the ability to hold 5,000 geocaches.
