  1. oh - i think the garmin's are a little better on batteries... plus they have that great little man walking around, don't they? don't get too stressed out - go and see what you like. sounds like entry level mapping (not the cheapest, but next one up) for either magellan or garmin will be perfect. enjoy - it really is fun and totally addictive! i'm just waiting for it to cool off a little here before heading out... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  2. ok... i have a magellan. it is bigger - so more bulky... but the screen is bigger too, and i like that. it is a meridian, so not bottom of range but close - picked it up for 119,00, but that was online. waas means it's using an additional set of geostatic satellites (along with the 24 GPS sats) and that will get you closer to what you're looking for (from 30, to 10 feet). my model does have this. i don't have any extras, don't imagine i'll need more memory - how much do i really need to store on it at one time? it could be as simple as - how much do you want to spend? and is mapping important? go to a store and have a look at some. ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  3. i have barely begun, and almost got an entry level, but after seeing one with basic entry level mapping, different make, almost same price, i bought one of those instead. ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  4. did you get any help on this? i'm at 97 23.3 and although I'm new at this, i'd be prepared to head out and give it a go - waco is pretty close... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  5. if 25 46.386 is anywhere near you, and you want to help out on a virtual cache, read about "where's in a name" http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=12627 (sorry i need to learn how to html that) and lemme know if you're interested... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  6. good advice here - thanks all... must say that for now i'm considering using the pc at work too... at least for a while. taking my husband on his first, me second hunt this evening (it's too hot in tx to be out all day...) ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  7. hilarious answer - ex-south african here now living in texas... get some advice from outdoorsy people you encounter during the business side of things - bet you can get at least one of them interested enough to go along with you! enjoy! ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  8. i ordered one of those rite in the rain log books, but it's taking a little longer to get here than the GPS did... so i'm looking the benchmarks until it does. my first cache was found with a photographer in tow, so i gave tons of shots of that... like the idea of a personal bug too... oh - and have a new dig camera to photograph. don't like excel at all, but i suppose that would be a good idea. ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  9. i wish i could afford a gps for her - she thinks this sounds cool... plus being in england (which is such a tiny country) there are literally TONS really close to where she lives... maybe next week after payday... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  10. there was a subliminal message in that npr piece, and it made me do it.
  11. had gps 2 days, 1 cache found so far, heading off to benchmark hunt along the sea wall tonight after work... probably spent $250 so far, and with a journalist's salary... i'm going to have to keep it around there! (luckily, i cleverly started collecting potential geo trinkets years ago, so have no shortage to dispense!) ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  12. right - i was talking to a guy who does a lot of mapping and he mentioned omnistar - i think he said the handheld to receive that was something like $12,000. 10 feet will do - and as there aren't any trees here in tx, 10 feet is about what i can get... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  13. geotharn... well. i haven't read the instructions yet, but it got me to a cache and a benchmark after work today. very user friendly - but i think i'll sit down and RTFM now. ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  14. i'm afraid i probably would have handed mine over too... glad you got it back again. and while i agree it's dumb, mohammed atta did in fact buy a gps unit while in new york to map the tower location. ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  15. no such thing as Afghani, i'm afraid... you'll have to leave a note in Pashto or Dari and possibly Baluchi, Pashai, or Nuristani too.
  16. thanks - i'll go and look on the bay... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  17. dang... i knew i should have come back here before doing the cyber shop... ah well... got a camelbak rocket (at a little less than the suggested price) probably should have gotten the lobo (better price), but i own a vw beetle and an imac, so that should adequately explain my shopping style. form, form, form. now all i need is a nice looking machete, and i'll be off... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  18. something funny, that says where i come from... which isn't here... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  19. had a look around and found some camelbaks at really low prices... not as cheap as some daypacks, but pretty close... yeah - it might be overkill, a little, perhaps, but as you say. even a walk along the seafront in high summer here will about kill you without a lot of water... thanks all... ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  20. because i'm a mac user, it's going to be SOME TIME before i hand over the not inconsiderable amount of cash required to get yellow to talk to blue - so... thanks for info on how to go manual! ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  21. excellent - thanks for all the comments... will work on keeping it light - although the urge to buy every gadget out there is pretty overwhelming... and i'll keep the platypus in mind. vest huh? i'm intrigued... i'll check that out too ___________________________________ there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  22. summer is about here, and it's quite something in texas, and the gps should arrive on tuesday. so in the interest of being prepared... which hydration pack is big enought to carry the few things you take along with you for the average peri-urban cache hunt? i won't be heading our into the wilds for some time, but will probably be doing some seashore trudging... i also don't want to look like some overgeared maniac. thanks a there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
  23. based on that npr piece, i tracked down the guy who put the first cache in the town that i live and work in... i'm a reporter for the local paper, and am working on a story about him / it... i also bought a gps today... i'm hooked before i've even begun... there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge. 24. yup - i'd noticed that too... as a newbie with no gps yet (it's on its way) but loads of time to read, it looks like i might find my first (if i find it) about 3 years after mike teague found his... there is no knowledge, only things, which is really old knowledge.
