  1. Thanks for the information. I went to the site and chose the appropriate squares and downloaded the query format that would download directly to my GPSr. Then I downloaded the map into the "main" Garmin folder when it opened (there was another file with a similar name there so I thought that was the right place) Is that all I need to do? I ran a query for each city and have it loaded on my GPSr too. So, just trying to give myself the best chance to find a few :)

    Thanks again,

I'll be going to SA next year. I always used http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ They have always been reliable for my needs.

And if you want to use your phone just buy a SIM card from a SA company assuming you have an unlocked phone.

Usually you can get 500megs of data for about $20 US.

  2. Hello everyone - just checking in - I am going to Capetown and Johannesburg South Africa next week and I wanted to grab a couple of caches while I am there. Not sure how I can go about doing this without South Africa maps for my Garmin - I just won't be caching more than grabbing those couple as I am there for something specific with folks who do not cache, so I don't want to spend the money on the maps - is there a way to download to my iPhone and use that without having the internet (which would also cost me a fortune) - any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  3. Hello UK Cachers! I am going to be visiting next week and wanted to try and do some light caching while in country. I will be in London, near Regent's Park, mostly for a couple of days, and then in Leeds for 3 days and then in York for 1 day. Have a coin to move, so need to find at least one large enough to accommodate coin, but really just wanted to have an idea of some "good" caches in these areas, so that I could build queries around them - sorry for the late notice - I leave on Tuesday morning, so only have 24 hours to prepare :)

    Can't wait - Blevdeb

  4. Hello and welcome - I live in NW Indiana and, while there are quite a few cachers here, the majority either freelance or belong to GONIL - which is North Eastern Illinois - they will let you join and many events are very close.

However, I would be interested in an informal group here in NWI - I cache a lot solo and enjoy meeting others who enjoy the hobby so we can join up occasionally - it can be lots of fun.......I have a page on geocaching.com - blevdeb - so connect as friend and maybe we can meet and cache one weekend. :D

  5. Don't confuse the compass that points to magnetic North, with the compass that points to the cache. They are two different things. Most times you don't really need a magnetic compass (or the electronic variety in the GPSr).

I was so happy to see someone discussing this issue. I have a Colorado 300 and I've been working to "learn" to use it. One of the issues is how to set the settings so that it points from where I am to which way the cache is - I had it on True North for a while and that wasn't right, changed it to user orientation, but still don't seem to be correct. Can anyone offer a bit of simple advice to me :D I'm sure I am overlooking it and feel quite dumb, but just want to cache :D thanks.

  6. I have been trying this for a week and have not found a thing (except other geocachers). The first two times went with the family right at twilight. Last weekend looked for a micro with a level 1 difficulty. This was a no go. Today looked for four geocaches and could not find any. 1 micro and the rest were medium sized caches. Level 1 or 2 difficulty and 1 or 2 for terrain. I gave myself a 30 foot leeway as I know co-ordinates are not spot on. I'm using a MIO c520 to cache with. I looked at clues and the logs. I have also left a DNF message on one of them. What am I doing wrong? I have a friend who's a veteran geocacher and he's offered to take the family on one; he's always finding caches. I'm about ready to give up on this.

Hello - I'll let you know if I'm in your position next week. Went this last weekend with 2 more experienced cachers and one who had been out, but couldn't find any on her own. We found 12, but the experienced folks were the key - they pulled the information and got us started, then I tracked. Probably wouldn't have found a few of them on my own or with someone else who wasn't experienced. Some were urban and some were in a local nature preserve out about 1/2 mile or so from parking. It was a blast, but relax - it's a challenge, but it's supposed to be fun too :D Read the clues too - helped me on a couple of them.

  7. First off...Hello to everyone out there!

I'm brand spanking new to the sport as well. I actually found the GC app in the App store which is what got me interested in the first place. I went out today for the first time and to my surprise I actually had some success. I found both of the caches I set out to find. The iPhone directed me to the exact spot of the first cache which was pretty awesome. The second find posed a bit of a problem though. I had the same bouncing around that you did. However, like many of the other posters have said, I let the phone catch up to me and the compass once again pointed me to the the proper location. So far so good...

Good luck on your future hunts! :D:(

Hello - new to the sport also. Went out with some friends this weekend for my first time - we found 12 - I don't know that I would have found them all because of what some others mentioned in the threads - I had no experience to tell me what I might be looking for and how it could be hidden. We were using the iPhone with GC app in conjunction with a "yellow" hand held gps and it worked well - we could search for local ones and descriptions and clues on the iPhone and then use the gps to track the coordinates. I only have an iphone, so we'll see how I do on my own over the next couple of weeks. Battery life of iPhone is not very long when using the app all the time. Good luck and have fun

  8. Looking for an assist. I am new to geocaching - had a great first time out and wanted to post a pic to my gallery - however, I can't figure out how to do that. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

    Thanks -
