  1. That was all we needed - thanks for the super swift reply!
  2. We just placed a geocoin in a new cache we hid and want to post a photo since the person that released the coin asked folks to... but we can't figure out how to do it on the web page. Help!
  3. I plan to order the City Navigator NT DVD to make my new Vista HCx more usable. I found that trying to find caches with no streets was pretty tough! One question I have though is whether I will be able to get turn by turn directions to an address (i.e. can I enter a street address into the unit the way you can with a vehicle GPS), or only to a preloaded POI or waypoint?
  4. Glad I read this post. I've had the same trouble with the compass on my Vista HCXseveral times and thought I was just doing something wrong, being new to GPS and geocaching. I tried recalibrating, turning the electronic compass on and off, etc. but it still behaved very strangely. I think it's going back while I'm still in my 30 day return window...
  5. I have had a Vista HCX for a few days now and have figured out many of its features. I bought a 2 gb card for it and have that loaded. Now I would love to have some street detail for caching. I'm on a Mac (although I have access to a PC if need be). So, does anyone have any advice on the best (and cheapest) way to get at least West Coast street info loaded onto it? I know there are individual Micro SD cards that have some maps, or there are CDs (which seem to only work on Windows). Any advice would be appreciated.

  7. Thanks everyone for all your great input. I finally returned the Crossover after it took 10 minutes to start up one morning and kept shutting itself down during the process. I have had my Vista HCX for a few days now and am slowly but surely getting familiar with it. I've figured out how to develop caches along a route, bookmark the ones I like, export that list as a .gpx, open that in MacCaching (I'm a Mac guy), and from there get them onto my Vista (and the details onto my iPod for paperless). Yee ha! I still haven't loaded any maps on there though - as I'm still a bit unsure how best to do that (and which maps to go for). This weekend is a long road trip and my first chance to test drive it. I'll let you know how it goes!
  8. Merci pour la réponse en francais! N'étant qu'un pauvre anglophone/américain, c'était un bonne surprise de la lire... et je viens de recevoir mon propre Vista HC! C'était peut-etre votre post qui m'a convaincu...
  9. Well it uploads to my 60csx. Though the caches use shortnames instead of GCxxxx names.. Hey, I clicked on your sig file and got to the MacCaching site - I hadn't stumbled on it before. I just downloaded it, got my caches onto my Vista HCX in no time, and even have the cache descriptions ready to put on my iPod for paperless caching. Finally - I think I've got a system down that all works on a mac! Now I just need to get out there and actually see if we can find the caches Thanks for your help!
  10. I've been having a great time with GJ, but have a few problems. One is that when I try to export to a text file, I get empty fields - but an email from Rich (thanks for the quick reply!) tells me that he's already fixed that and it will show up in the next release. The other issue is with getting caches uploaded to my Vista HCX. It just doesn't work. I have an email in to Rich, but has anyone else tried this?
  11. I'm very much a newbie (just found our first cache last week). We're driving from Seattle to Northern CA next week (Burney) and I want to find a good assortment of caches right off the highway to keep it interesting for our 8 year old son. Problem is that I can't seem to get the "Find Caches Along a Route" Feature to work right. I've followed the directions that are found here and there and managed to upload a map from Google Earth, but then when I run the pocket query and try to view it from the "preview on map" button, I get a cluster of caches in Seattle and nothing more. I've also tried to export the GeocachingNetworkKML.kml file from my accounts page into Google Earth and I get a message saying that I've "exceeded the allowed views for the day" - but checking the next day it still says that. Argh! Any good step by step tutorials out there on this process to help me out? Thanks for reading this...
  12. Thanks for posting the icon png. Who knew that was a trash can? Archive? Mmmm....
  13. You can remove your PQ's via the checkboxes to the left and the archive trashcan icon at the bottom. Thanks! I never would have figured that out!
  14. I've racked up a number of pocket queries while trying (unsuccessfully) to use the "find caches along a route" feature. How do I delete them from the pocket query page in My Account - there isn't any obvious way to do so that I can see...
  15. I love the "Map It" feature. It really helps to see the caches displayed on a map. It works fine when I search by zip code, but when I try and view all the caches in a state (Oregon), the "Map It" icon isn't displayed in the upper right hand corner of the results page. Am I missing something?
  16. Thanks for the ideas, StarBrand. Unfortunately I got the same message when I reloaded the kml file fresh from my Accounts page. I also can't get the pocket query to run from the route I created and uploaded to Geocaching.com. Every time I try to run one I get this message "Server Error in '/' Application. Queue empty." Any other clues? That PQ error has been happening with the routes thing - but check your email - you will probably get the PQ anyway. Happened for every one I ran the past few days but they all arrived looking ok. Thanks again. You're right - it emailed anyway. Much appreciate the help!

  18. I've been trying to figure out how to view caches in Google Earth. I got it to work once, but now everytime I try and check the box for the folder in the "places" window (in Google Earth) it says "you have exceeded the allowed views for the day, please try tomorrow." I've tried this over a few days, so I'm confused. Anyone else played around with this feature? The one time I got it work it was very cool!
  19. Okay, one more question - will the City Navigator map add ons work with a Mac? I'm strictly mac here and don't want to find out down the road that a PC is required...
  20. You've nearly convinced me - I don't see the HCx on Amazon yet though. Do you know offhand how it differs from the existing Vista CX (which is on sale at Amazon for 234$)? I'm using a credit on Amazon, so I need to get it there. BTW, thanks for your input on this, it is really helpful!
  21. Well, I could spend a total or 500 or so - but I don't want to make life anymore complicated than it needs to be. What do you use? I like the look of the eTrex Vista CX and have read good things about it, but if I can't enter addresses and get directions... such a tough decision! We've got a road trip coming up in a few weeks, so I'm anxious to get set up ASAP. Recommendations, oh Seasoned Geocacher?
  22. I've had the Magellan Crossover for a few weeks now. I wanted both the vehicle spoken turn by turn directions based on addresses and a unit that would allow us to geocache (waypoints). We used it last week on our first 4 caches - and found them all! Had a great time. Problem is, the unit seems kind of clunky and inconsistent. It lost reception often under moderate tree cover, and a few times now has taken as long as 5 or more minutes to find satellites when turned on. My question: would I be better off getting a Nuvi for the car and a separate unit for geocaching? It would cost me a few hundred more, but I wanted to hear if others had more experience with the Crossover and could vouch for it's long-term usability. Thanks!
