  1. My daughter was the one who got me interested in geocaching when she was at Penn State. My husband and son are cachers by association only as they do not have their own accounts. My favorite caching experience was finding two caches in Ireland with my daughter last June.
  2. Wow, just found this thread as I don't visit the coin forum much. This is a terrific coin and I'm sorry I missed the pre-sale ordering. If there will be a reminting, please let me know. My daughter, who got me into geocaching, received her PhD from Trinity College Dublin last June. This coin would mean so much to both her and me if I could order two of them. Thanks!!
  3. I had a cache where, if you looked at the old TopoZone map, it appeared that you needed a boat to collect it as it was "in the middle of the reservoir". But, in reality, the dam for the reservoir was compromised decades ago, and the cache was hidden in a tree that grew on the side of the creek that once fed the lake. So, from the map, it looked like a difficulty 5, but the cache was rated 1.5. Some folks were still hesitant to go for it as it looked like one needed "special equipment".
  4. And make sure you have the island owner's permission to place the cache there.
  5. I've been caching for five years with a yellow eTrex (Basic model, not H). I'm up to 300+ caches with it, but I use a magnetic compass as well.
  6. I was gripping the arms of my chair while I watched this (when I didn't have my eyes closed). Thanks for the virtual hike! I'm glad I can choose NOT to do that hike!
  7. Congratulations to Sparticus06 on his 500th find!! Way to go!!!
  8. My first inclination was to suggest Gym & Angi's Giant Cache, but then I saw that you have found it. My next suggestion is GC5559C Won't You Be My Neighbor, south of Armagh. Not far away from there is a cache which was placed after the archiving the cache I found for my 100th back in February 2005. The current cache is GC1D6J1 The Hidden Jewel of Packsaddle Hollow. The cache I found was 100 yards further up the creek. The current cache is a 1/3 cache. If done in the winter, like now, the snow makes it a beautiful place but not always easy to walk through. You might want to e-mail the cache owner first, though, to make sure it will be available. Good luck and let me know which one you choose for your 500th!
  9. And no snakes! They hibernate in the winter, at leastthey do here in western PA. Wearing layers is a must in winter. A couple years ago, we had a group together so I could find my 100th cache in February. It was in the low 20's F. when we left the house and got warmer as the day went on. Sweatshirts under our winter coats came off, though hats and gloves were still needed. One of the problems of caching in the winter is avoiding getting snow in the cache container, though it may be easier to find by following the footprints in the snow. But that doesn't always work if the previous finder had difficulty finding the cache.
  10. You can post the message "Requesting that moderator close the topic." on your topic. It will be closed by a moderator. After that, no one can post any more responses to your topic and it will eventually drop off the page. Is that what you want?
  11. That's nice to know, Keystone. But I'm not on my computer at that time; my slow times have occurred between 8 AM and 4 PM EST. In fact, I was timed out twice this morning between 8 AM and noon.
  12. I have had difficulty lately with the site, too. Many times I get timed out before my post has been recorded. Then I have to type the same thing all over again.
  13. So THAT's what you look like! Who's the good looking guy behind you?!?
  14. I know and appreciate my reviewer as well. And I have cached with him and his offspring. We dined al fresco at a landmark cache.
  15. Wharton where? I know of one in PA and one in WV.
  16. Actually, and I speak here as somewhat of an amateur authority of the matter, because I spent six years in graduate school on a campus (IUP) located not far from Latrobe, PA, the home of Rolling Rock beer, the 33 on the label does NOT refer to the 33rd degree of Freemasonry. Nor, surprisingly, does it refer to the old "33" which many editors and reporters used to indicate the end of their story in the early and mid 20th century. Nor does it refer to 1933, the year in which Prohibition was repealed. In fact, no one knows for sure how or why the "33" came bo be on the bottle -- and it has been there since 1939, but the theory that I -- and most of the locals around Latrobe, PA back in the early 1990s, seemed to like the most is the one which is recounted in the article on the Rolling Rock "33" at Snopes.com. Briefly, this theory postulates that the 33 ended up on the label entirely by accident, due to a stray "33" that someone at the brewery had accidentally scribbled on a graphic design sheet which was sent to the printer. Of course, as the article concludes, no one REALLY knows for sure how the 33 got there! My son currently attends IUP; my second daughter graduated from there in 2007. One version that I heard that the 33 refers to the 33-word legend on the back of the bottle. But others say what you said, they really don't know. And our current favorite brew comes from Straub. We have yet to visit inside the Straub brewery, but we did find the cache that used to be outside. Wish I could get to the event. That place must be fascinating!
  17. HOORAY FOR SPARTACUSO6!!! You passed by my find number quite quickly!! Congratulations!!!
  18. I will be following this thread. My Palm m130 died a year ago and I miss it for paperless caching. My husband is willing to purchase a Palm TX for me that includes wifi (which I would use) and Bluetooth (which I won't need...yet). I think I can get by with a Tungsten E2 just as easily. That's a $200 product as opposed to the TX which is $300.
  19. But it is a possibility. I am just reviewing the Cachemate information. The cost is now $10 for the Palm related Cachemate program.
  20. You do not need to spend $400 for a new gizmo to do paperless caching. A simple Palm PDA can cost $100 (new) or less (if used) and Cachemate will cost $8 $10. A DeLorme gazeteer for your state may cost $20. That adds up to $128 $130. The $272 $270you save by not buying the latest and most complex gadget will go into the gas tank to get you to many, many more caches! Good luck!
