  1. That's an known feature/bug of the older Magellan models. It's called the boomerang or slingshot effect.

From Robert Lipe's Magellan GPS FAQ:

Why does the unit take me past a waypoint then bring me back?

This is sometimes called "overshoot", or the "slingshot effect". The units perform some kind of motion averaging. If you briskly approach a waypoint (as geocachers often do) the units will generally take you up to a couple dozen feet past the point. As you stop, the unit will slowly (over a course of a minute or so) bring you back to the point in question.

Various people report it being different in different versions, lunar phasing, and so on, but it's been observed in all firmware versions as of this writing.

  2. When the EPE field reads WAAS or averaging how can I determine the error??

On my SporTrak I can configure the data fields that are displayed on the screen. EPE is a possible selection. I don't know if this works on a 330, too.

  3. What's the difference between primary and secondary map datum?

On the position screen of your SporTrak you can display the coordinates in two different formats (primary & secondary) at the same time.

    I would select the following:

    Primary coordinate system: Lat/Lon (DEG/MIN.MMM)

    Primary map datum: WGS84

    Secondary coordinate system: UTM

    Secondary map datum: WGS84

  4. When you travel that far it's a good idea to initialize your GPSr with the new coordinates so it knows which satellites to look for. This will help to get a lock much faster.

In case of your Magellan simply select Setup > Initialization. You get a menu where you can choose the country (Europe > Sweden) or enter rough coordinates manually.

  5. If you are using a Magellan unit, the default settings for the secondary coordinates are UTM/NAD27 if I recall correctly. You have to switch the secondary map datum to WGS84 if you want to use the UTM coordinates for geocaching.

  6. The owner's note from May 9 2005 says something like:

Searched for a new place for this cache far away from the previous cache. Our relatives in France have stopped caching and also won't do any maintenance. We let the old log entries stay, of course.

  7. Personally, I don't use the "print friendly" format.  Certainly it does have its advantages, but I print all the logs to a PDF file and then print the first two pages of that to paper, front and back side of one sheet.  With the print friendly version I can only get 5 logs no matter how much room that leaves on the page.

With a little bit of URL fiddling you can have the best of both worlds. Just change the URL of the printer friendliy page for example from

    ... &log=y&numlogs=5&decrypt=

    to

    ... &log=y&numlogs=20&decrypt=

This is how it looks like:

    .../cache_details.aspx?pf=y&ID=23426&log=y&numlogs=20&decrypt=

  8. The challenge is to create the method to make a change like that.

It might be that everyone agrees that it is best but unless a way to implement a change is suggested in addition, then it might not be received.

I guess all it needs is adding a condition to the WHERE clause of the SQL query. :)

    SELECT count(*) from log WHERE log.cacheid = $CID AND log.type = 1

    Just my 2 cents
