  1. I have been out of geocaching for the last few years. The last time was quite a few years ago, 2007, and the unit I used then was a Magellan Meridian Platinum. At that time it required all kinds of programs, bells and whistles to download waypoints from my apple computer to the unit. I see that now the option is paperless with the right setup. I now have an Apple Macbook Pro and am thinking of getting back into the fun again. What Garmin GPS would be best for me and also what is the best integration between the geocaching.com website with cables, etc. to get waypoints loaded to a suitable GPS unit? Thanks. I am sure the technology has morphed substantially and I need all the help I can get to be back on the curve. Oilfieldtrash
  2. I'm pretty sure this has been covered before but here goes. I have a Magellan Meridian Platinum which is a good unit, had it for about 3 years. It only came with a limited amount of basemaps. My gpsr has detail only down to the farm to market road level. It would be helpful when geocaching here in East Texas to at least have detail to county road level. Are there any downloadable maps, for example streetatlas, which work with my gpsr? Is the only software compatible with MeriPlat the Mapsend product? Appreciate any help. Got a Windows based laptop so I won't have any problem with computer OS compatibility.
  3. Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to using GSAK on my windows based system and learning the ins and outs of the program.
  4. I recently got a good deal on a HP Laptop. Currently at home I use a MacMini OS X system for my desktop. I want to use the Windows based laptop for storing info for later use in geocaching, even tho it would not be connected wirelessly to the Internet while on geocaching expeditions. What would be the most efficient way to store plenty of info such as cache info, hints, waypoints as well as maps corresponding to each site. There must be a better way than simply saving gobs of info as documents, to call up later. Is there a program(s) to download lots of information in a concise, organized format? I am a relative newbie and currently just print out cache info and maps off my OS X system to take with me. Thanks for any help!
  5. I took the plunge about 6 months ago and go a Mac Mini computer running Mac OS X Tiger. When I bought it, my geocaching activities had lapsed. I have since started again, and used to use Easy PX to download waypoints to my Magellan Meridian Platinum. I have had to start punching in waypoints manually to my GPS unit. Is there any program or way to get waypoints from geocaching.com to my gps unit via an apple computer? Any help would be appreciated.
  6. I just last week received a MeriPlat from shopharmony.com and was well satisfied with their service and most especially their price. Kudos to the Meriplat, works like a charm and is easy to understand. Download easygps and you can't go wrong. Two days ago I also ordered from shopharmony the meridian gps holder, the case, and also the cigarette lighter adapter power source. Am waiting on it even as we speak. It looks like shopharmony is a good, reliable e-source of equipment. Ralph

But since you are a fellow Texan, I will share my experience. Are you having trouble downloading the program from the web? Or is it trouble downloading from the GPS to the program? Or is it trouble loading from program to GPS? Soooo... I cannot answer your question. I used EasyGPS for a few days, and I saw the potential it had. So I downloaded the trial version of ExpertGPS and tried it. Within DAYS I bought ExpertGPS. I have tried EVERY other program possible when they are listed in the forums here. Some get close, but I still end up back at ExpertGPS every time. It is worth the price. I also use VisualGPS. It is a fun program to play with on a laptop out in the desert. ExpertGPS and VisualGPS is a hard combo to beat. I don't know what "Hassles" you are experiencing downloading EasyGPS, so I don't know if it is worth it to you or not. Mike. They are not assault weapons anymore... they are HOMELAND DEFENSE WEAPONS! Was simply wondering if for the novice, just getting starting geocacher, whether downloading the easygps sytem and using it would tend to complicate the ease and fun of the weekend, not pro geocacher. I just want to have the most enjoyment with this newfound sport/avocation. Thanks
  8. I am new to geocaching, got a Meridian Platinum earlier this week and have already logged two caches. I have looked at the EasyGPS download system that is available for entering waypoints. Is it worth the hassle or am I better off just entering waypoint coordinates by hand that I get off the geocaching cache pages? Any input would be helpful. Thanks. Befuddled in Texas
  9. quote:Originally posted by Doc22026:I only just heard of geocaching 72 hours ago, and already I think I feel an addiction coming on. The concept seems clear, but when looking for equipment, I am flooded with information about fishing, camping, etc. What I want to know is what type of GPS I need to start this adventure. I don't have a ton of money, and I am eager to start...TODAY. I would order a system, but don't know what I need, nor do I have the patience to wait for the mail to come. Anyone feel my pain and have some useful advice? I will appreciate it all. Thanks, and happy hunting. Got me a Magellan Meridian just a couple of days ago. Works really well and also had a $50 rebate. Got to the first cache without any problem. Enjoy the map feature and pretty well leads you to within 20 feet of the location without any problem. In my opinion, can't go wrong with the Meridian Platinum. Bought mine at shopharmony.com
