  1. Does anyone know where I can source a serial to USB cable to connect my old eTrex to my Mac iBook? I have found a few places abroad on the web but wondered if there was a Kiwi option Cheers bnug
  2. Due to imminent emigration to NZ, the following caches all require adoption: Traditional Cache A (Shipless) Mast In Docklands - GCG0WN N 51° 29.598 W 000° 00.840 British Grid: TQ 37966 79025 In United Kingdom Hidden: 4/27/2003 Traditional Cache Millenium Dome View - GCG23N N 51° 30.493 E 000° 00.153 British Grid: TQ 39070 80716 In United Kingdom Hidden: 5/4/2003 Virtual multi-cache Tom, Dick and Harry - GCG24W N 51° 29.935 E 000° 03.710 British Grid: TQ 43212 79795 In United Kingdom Hidden: 5/4/2003 Traditional Cache The Barrier Method - GCG22P N 51° 29.990 E 000° 02.101 British Grid: TQ 41348 79845 In United Kingdom Hidden: 5/4/2003

  4. In my experience, experience counts. I am pretty new to this pastime but have a fair whack of business and volunteer experience through managing large multi-team groups and being a parent governor. Like many have expressed already, I have endured the worst of 'trial by committee' and the excesses of the over-enthusiast 'barrack room' lawyers. It would seem that, now more than ever, GC in the UK needs the skills of the recently stepped-down Admins/Moderators, even if only to assist in bring the next generation on. From what I have read here and elsewhere, they seem to have played a significant role in extracting concessions from GC.com in terms of localising rulings on cache placement and make-up and, should that cease, I doubt whether it will take long for things to become more centralised. Having managed regional teams through acquisitions and mergers, I know that it is very tempting for those calling the majority of the shots to centralise as much of process, procedure and policy, rather than deal with any number of locally represented groups. If those who have recently stood down are still minded to remain so, maybe an interim solution would be for them to assist any nominated replacements by passing on their skills. Another idea might be to encourage them to return, supported by some localised assistant moderators who could i) assist with forum moderation and ii) help assess and approve submitted caches nearest their area. bignoseduglyguy www.bignoseduglyguy.com - obligatory caching page now added!

  7. One of the things that drew me to GCing was the lively friendly UK GC community which, a month or so ago, seemed a million miles from the flame wars that beset the geek and foodie usenet groups I also frequent. Now the forums here and at GCUK seem to be heading that way fast. I have no strong opinions either way on the main bones of contention being bandied about at this time - I have seen this all before in hiking, mountain-biking and off-road forums, especially the land access issues and will reserve any judgement/offer of help until I'm a little more 'in the know'. However, I do know that whilst I have yet to meet another cacher, I have benefitted from the help of a fair number already. Chris n Maria exchanged supportive and instructive mails and sorted out some wrinkles with my GPS that were spoiling my fun. Their site, along with Mark's, Teasel's and a host of others have been a great fast track way to learning the sport/hobby. Last but not least, it has never taken Tim and June much more than 24 hrs to approve my caches. Having finally found a indoor and outdoor pastime that I can be involved in on my own, with a couple of my kids or the whole family to any number of levels, it is my hope that this is a blip on the radar and that there are smoother times ahead. bignoseduglyguy www.bignoseduglyguy.com - obligatory caching page now added!

Teasel's stats site appears to have recorded the first ever cache hidden with a time machine - the hidden column of the UK Stats page reveals all.... bignoseduglyguy www.bignoseduglyguy.com - obligatory caching page now added!
  9. I have never met another cacher but I have met: a dodgy bloke an amourous cow four youths coursing with lurchers a barking mutt two surly painters a picnicking family another bloke trying my car door handles Luckily, I'm a people person! bignoseduglyguy www.bignoseduglyguy.com - obligatory caching page now added!
  10. OK, OK - so I'm here but here's my reason. Whilst I was out logging three caches in the City Of London yesterday (Thanks, Wombles), I was constantly called by my company's operations centre to co-ordinate a disaster recovery plan. Having organised the fix that restored service, I went home. Today, I'm back in the centre and we have the same problem again and, during this lull in the restoration process, I am sneaking a peek at the forums. The way I see it - I'm clawing back the Bank Holiday hours I spent working rather than caching yesterday. Fair enough? [] bignoseduglyguy www.bignoseduglyguy.com - obligatory caching page now added!
  11. quote:Originally posted by GeneralUrsus:Ticks can cause tics... http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/jake/mosaic/lyme.html The wife of a friend of mine has had Lyme Disease for years. She'd go bonkers sometimes just because she saw a certain pattern or color. Believe me, as someone who has Lymes Disease and it's after effects, you don't want to take it lightly. I used to travel to the US every year on business and spent weekends hiking various trails in shorts, never thinking to cover up (no need in the UK). I got a tick bite walking a section of the AT and thought nothing of it, scratching it now and then over the duration of the trip. It was only on the flight back to the UK that the full symptoms of what turned out to be Lymes Disease came on - almost certainly the worst 9 hours in my life. I only got a good diagnosis beacuse my doctor also hiked and had read of the disease. I spent the following weeks delirious with fever, muscle and joint pain and still suffer dizziness and chronic tiredness on occasion to this day. Prevention is 1000% better than cure, believe me. bignoseduglyguy www.bignoseduglyguy.com - obligatory caching page now added!
  12. quote:The date has finally been settled as Saturday 19th July....we will need volunteers for the day to help explain to Geomuggles about caching and maybe help them find a cache or two, which have been planted specially for the day.1) Attend 2) Help out 3) Camp overnight T&J et al Fairly recent convert (11 logged/1 placed) but keen to be involved, so... 1) Date is in the diary - all things permitting, me and at least one of the sprogs will attend. 2) More than happy to help out - and I'm sure the Cub sprog will be coming so she will, I'm sure. 3) Up for camping - practice for aforementioned Cub sprog. 14. How on earth!? With four sprogs, f/t job and a stupidly long commute, there is not enough hours in the day to ever get close to this - I have only just managed ten in the last two weeks! I thought Munro baggers were single-minded but this shows a dedication that makes them seem like slackers bignoseduglyguy growing old in mandatory growing up is optional www.bignoseduglyguy.com
  15. Congrats from a newbie who has only just bust the 10 mark! I suspect it'll be a long while before I get close to the ton let alone the double ton. bignoseduglyguy growing old in mandatory growing up is optional www.bignoseduglyguy.com
  16. Could anyone please point me to a good source (other than Garmin?) for a cable to connect my eTrex to a PC (USB or serial)? Likewise, the software I need to get waypoints onto my GPS? Have looked around a little but would appreciate some guidance from those more experienced. bignoseduglyguy growing old in mandatory growing up is optional www.bignoseduglyguy.com
  17. Enjoyed hunting for my first ten caches so naturally I would like to give something back by creating some. I have a number of traditional ones in mind but would like advice on an idea I have for some virtual ones. I don't want to give too much away for obvious reasons but here's the key stuff. I wish to to create three themed virtual caches. Each waypoint is in a public but subterranean location, accessible by foot - no, it's not the Underground. Obviously, there will be no GPS signal at each location but I plan to set a question for each that will i) ensure that the hunter knows when they have reached the desired point and ii) the answer to which will prove they have been there. I have read the rules, guidelines and FAQ at geocaching.com and believe these caches to be well within the letter and spirit of them. Comments / suggestions please? bignoseduglyguy growing old in mandatory growing up is optional www.bignoseduglyguy.com
