  1. I was hunting in Lasen county, CA and in one day ran into a huge cat(Mt. Lion) and two cyotes who were following us, we also have cats that live around us in Murrieta, CA (southern cal.)in the hills. Here they are becoming a problem, chasing people, mauling people, and yes sometimes eating. Cats are something to fear becaus of their stealth, speed, inteligence, and strength. Especially when you are alone, you make a perfect walking meal that can't run very fast. The only thing is that most have an instinctual fear of mankind. Also they are cautious when they decide wether to attack. So making yoruself large and making intimidating noises will help you in an encounter. Also I would cary some pepper spray and a good kniff or pistol (dependign on the place you are caching) Encounters with cats are often rare but just remember those things when you are out caching and whatever you do do not run or scream, when you do that they will instinctually attack you (the same goes with bears and cyotes) If you keep your cool in an encounter and play it smart you will usually make it out of such encounters unscathed. and theres my two bits worth
  2. You also might want to consider having the ammo can for protection from the river only. Drilling holes in it a few places and giving it a good primer coat and have a smaller and more watter proof container for a log book or whatever and have the log book in a plastic bag as well to fight the condensation that will form. and then all the things that don' t fit in the water tight container should be immersible objects. that away the ammo can can keep the river from beating up the plastic container and the container beeing disloged. and some one also mentioned the dificulty of submersing a water tight can. well the advantage of haveing the ammo can with holed is you cna place rocks in there or a non-corosive metal in the amo can so that the water proof container wont float away. Just a thought
  3. Would anyone care to tell me how one would deactivate a destroyed cache, reactivate one that has been remade, look at archived caches, and wether mountain dew or coke is better. thanks
  4. Well i just leanred about this "animal encounter" thing and theres some prety cool pics here!!! Anyways i wasent caching but hunting deer in centeral west coast (where i cannot tell you its too good a spot) but i was taking a 4 or so mile hike to my blind at about 3 or so in the morning and yes we do hike at nite (cant help it it's too hot in cali. ) and i saw two glowing redish-almost blaze-orange eyes they were the size of a large locust would have. but here is the wierd part...no one had any flashlights on (eyes can adjust to alot more than you can think) so does anyone know what this bug im guessing could have been???
  5. hey, i bought MapSend Topo and the version is 4.20 i believe and i noticed it is a bit dated so does anyone know if there is at least a version upgrade if it exsits?
  6. oh guess I dident notie that when i put the card in. thanks
  7. Well I got a 128mb SD and Map Send Topo for christmas (yay!). And to see if it worked i uploaded a small margin of the area around my house. So how do you delete it from the GPS (I have a meridi. plat.)? I probably could figure it out with some time but this way it will save the efort.
  8. when you download the upgrade it comes with a read-me those are the directions you need to reed. by the way I also have a meridian platinum and I was pleased with the upgrade.
  9. Hey everyone here is a comparison web-site that finds all the best prices its pretty cool. I used it to get my Meridian Platinum for $250 no hiden charges or anything and it was mailed in 2 days! anyways its already on the meridialn platinum page but you can mess around with the site if you want another unit. http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod...29b81589684dea6
  10. well herse my 2cents worth i say go with the best and get a meridian platinum so you don't have to upgrade to a unit in the future. I have one and the electronical compas (which the one your looking at does not offer)is very very nice when you are looking for caches. and also i know of a web site that sells them for $250 or lessunlike the average $350 or $300 that you would find in other places and its not one of those mail-in rebates either. here is the web site that compares all the best prices (they say its $246 right now) http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod...29b81589684dea6
  11. ok early this year i bought a Magellan Meridian Platinum and i love it it got me unlost with the help of a friend on a walkie talkie with a gps but on the box it show a picture of the built in weather station ive been to that page and it doesent show the little sun partially clouded sun and the clouds on the baro-preasure reading circle it doesent show the little snow flake and chili peper on the thermometer and the baro-preasure history graph is not that nice smooth line. so whats the deal! ive played around with options alot and i have the latest firmwear so is this just something they put on there to attract impulse buyers at the frys electronic store or is there something i can do that iv'e misseed?
  12. hi everyone i have a Meridian Platinum and they come with a built in 16mb basemap of N and S America(thers only like three roads in south america acording to this) and since Murrieta a city of like 60,000 is only shown to be 2,500 and some roads that are said to exsist do not anymore and roads that are new arent on there this map of mine is obviously drawn in the 50's or something lol. so does anyone know of a software upgrade for this map or am i gona have to ly down the doh and get a better map?
  13. well i have never had that problem except for mayme a few metters off the road with my meridian platinum (does the more expensive magellan units have better accuracy than the less expensive?)
  14. well my Meri. Platinum has always been acurate when i have a decent satalite reading except for the tenth of mph.
  15. thanks alot i dident even notice that little option
  16. I just downloaded it and love it it saves alot of time but when you download waypoints they are each there own file. is there a way to put multiple waypoints in the same file so i dont have to have 500 different EasyGPS files lying around spaming my computer
  17. which wally world and do they have an internet sorce hunt
  18. we all should sign a partition and tell Magellan to straighten out
  19. ok thanx dusty. uh also i heard that if you buy a sandisk with a capacity over 64mb then you need a special disk reader to fill it all the way up instead of the cable that comes with the gps unit is this statement true?
  20. Well ime pretty new at using GPS and i needed one for hunting so i decided to go with the best i could afford. Yay for maridian platinum! And I want to get some topo maps for it for the purpose of geocaching as well as hunting> so do you need to use the Map Send software or can i use the Topo USA software from DeLorme? and is there a website where i could download such maps?
