  1. Can someone help. I need to know how to adopt a cache. there is an old one that i love that (its 11 years old!) and the owner was gonna let it go until i offered to adopt it. he does not know how to give it to me so i need some guidance.
  2. a little while ago, there was a post about making a caching staff and excelent indtructions were given by Mr. eldiablo. I even saved it on my comp but i missed the part on how to make a crooked stick into a straight staff. eldiablo? any other carpenters? thanks
  3. i have been a cacher since 03 just now pushing my 50th cache find. and there is always an initial aww when you see big numbers like when you see a lifted truck drive by but then you realize that those tires are useless and dont mean a thing about the driver, i know some cachers with high numbers that are as stupid as a cow and others that are brilliant. to know if a cacher realy has nails in his knuckles you gota see What caches he has found, FTF's also are a good indicator becaus it is very hard to get one if you are in an area with other true hard core cachers. But even with all that this is a sport for fun and pleasure, not hollywoods red carpet, i dont care if i am taken for a compleet fool and novice, i dont even take myself that seriously, if someone is status hungry then they have heart problems. and you never know what a novice cacher might be professionally, you could be a desert rat with 2ooo finds and be unknowingly laighing at the CEO of some furtune 100 company then who is the dummy? in short, lets all keep in mind that this is a sport of fun and a comonground for many and respect others as we would expect to reieve it.
  4. I have spent many years studdying and meditating on seeing things and avoiding beeing seen. The primary thing that you notice when identifying an object is movement, no matter what you look like. that obviously isent a problem with a cache. second would be the outline, if someone knows they are looking for a box shaped object they will hone in on it in a heart beat so as previously said, breaking up the outline is crucial. next is color shade and color. for instance a bright green object in a darker shaded bush will stick out like a sore thumb. and all that beeing said, use paint to create teaxture, to break up the outline. and there is no single pattern to use becaus places to hide a cache will vary. so find the spot where you want it and look at it from different distances and angles, high, low, near, far. maybee even take a few pictures. decide whether the shades should be lighter or darker depending on the tarain immediately around it, make sure that wherever it is it is not put at an angle where it is not sky-lined (put with an opposing background so the shape is easily seen such as a figure on top of a hill with nothing but a blue sky behind). estimate the %age of certain colors and paint your cache acordingly (ex. you dont have a forest green base coat if you are hiding it in dry grass, or dark colors if it is in a very well lit area with mostly light colors) so yes, that is my 2-bits:movement, shape, contrast, color
  5. Paper is ok for me, but when your trying to go on a cache binge and up your stats with a bunch of parkinglot caches then you need a palm, but isent caching something that should be enjoyed and take a little time? that is for everyone to decide for themselves, but i like to look around and find a cache that i want to find first and plan a trip and print out the maps and everything, that makes it a treasure hunt not a scavanger hunt for me. and i guess that is why i only have 27 finds in 3 years of caching
  6. I like the ideah of using thick, wide PVC to make a dual-chambered container, one chamber beeing for weight and the other with a screw on cap or some kind of seal that will last long and withstand preassure. also a wide base can be added for stability, if it were heavy enough, and placed in a location that is unnafected by current, I think it would work just fine, I thought also of fashioning a housing for it like a 5-gal bucket in a pile of rocks with a camoed lid and then the cache would be inside. and somewhere inside the housing there could be a reflective buoy that could be left out while the diver serfaces and logs his find, then on a second dive he could put the cache back easily and tuck the buoy back in to reset the cache for the next brave SCUBA-Cacher (is it just me or is that name catchy, someone aught to coin that and make a club)
  7. I've seen the effects of water on a pencil, the wood definately swells and eventually fals apart, i was thinking of a waterproof container that you would have to surface and then get into.
  8. I am interested in scuba caches btw. and although the wetness factor, not to mention preasure, can be detrimental to a cache, a well designed and constructed container will eliminate these problems. And if it is in the ocean, I doubt you would have muggler problems on a private boat ( since I'm planning on putting it in a place that will require that). I know this all might be a bit crazy but I want to make a cache that will cater to the extreem cachers. For those who cant hack it, they can go to their local grocery stores and chose from one of the five caches that are probably crammed all over the parking lot. (over crowding is a big problem where I live)
  9. One type of cache that is not yet wide spread and yet is still such a great opportunity for a good hunt is underwater caches. If anyone has any cool ideahs or knows of one, post it here! (I'm brainstorming for a future cache)
  10. I enjoy crankin' some hard-core opera when I am dooing some hairy off-road manuvers...It just seems fitting
  11. I live in Murrieta, CA and I don't know exactaly how many are in the area but there is at least 30 WITHIN 1 mile of my house and when I look on the map of my area to locate a cache I see all cache and no map!! I personaly wish they werent so "dime-a-dozenis" And by the way do you guys sit at cound all those active caches or is there a way to look at the database that will tell you?
  12. I've been using the old paper meathod myself, after reading this I think I am definately going paperless...so thanks in advance for saving me, I'm sure this form will be gone before I see the light
  13. the lack of expandable memory does not sound good indeed! and do they have handheld HEM radios or are they like a CB radio?
  14. using easy gps how do i place waypoints on the sd card via card reader where the gps will read them? i tried saving them on there as .gpx it was a no go...
  15. Well I started out with a Magellan Meri. Plat. but it dident measure up to what is is abvetised to do, and there maps are older than dinosaurs. But Garmin seems to be a better company all around. And if you look on these forums, you will find way more complaints about Magellans than Garmins (if any ), and they have constant new and inovative ideahs. All i own is a Magellan but I think I am still a Garmin man
  16. I've been looking at those Garmin Rhino units and they have recently come out with some pretty cool ones with the electric compases and barometers and altimiters and increased ranges of GMRS comunication and the ability to locate a friend with the same units is pretty cool too. But is it a good unit to go for in consernes to geocaching?
  17. do they have a watterproof model???
  18. I call myself Hunt becaus it was the thrill of the hunt (for caches) that got me into this sport in the first place. And it might have to do with the fact that I am a hunter too
  19. your right, ill have to stick something valuable in there as insentive. and I can be proud of the fact that i have created a cache that only the most avid (insane) cacher will find
  20. Its funny you guys are speaking of remote island and under water caches becaus i am planning on mixing the two its gona be "sweet!" as my generation would say. Becaus I am a diver and I have alot of conectoins in the Fiji Islands. Im planning on hidding one 10 to 25 meters underwater in some crevice that no one would ever think of near an island (probably Beqa) that you would have to rent (or own) a boat and diving gear to get too, and you still probably wont find it since I'll only give quardinance of a place to anchor...Doesent that sound exciting/hard. ITs gona be a year or two before I execute that plan though, so nobody steal my great ideah!!! and by the way if anyone finds the cache page for that one deep one, I'd like to see it...
  21. ok so this pocket query sounds pretty cool, who wouldent want all those caches in detail right on your GPS. But how do I get them on my meri. plat. with just a disk reader...will i have to buy GSAK or that other one or will easy gps do it. or can i just transform them into a format that the gps will read and put it straight onto my card (if so explain that whole format thing). thanks guys, not very savy on gps technical stuff...
  22. Hey everybody, I have a Meri. Plat., an SD card and a card reader but no GPS interface cable (it grew leggs and ran away) so how do I upload geocache locations and other waypoints to my SD card so that the GPS will read it. My goal is to Download caches from this site and then upload a bunch of them to the SD card. Thanks In advance for all your help! Hunt
  23. Heres a thought for all you guys who have had their locked caches stollen by mugglers and idiot poser cachers. I'm thinking of bolting it to something like a tree or a rock or something. that way the only way in is through the lock. no take home and saw in half any more. just be sure to ask the owbner of the tree/rock first
  24. Im not familiar with this lingo yet. Im guessing that TN is took nothing and LN is left nothing and SL i have no ideah. Someone wana verify this and let me know any other crazy lingo i need to know. I'm trying to get my nerd on here. No offence everyone, nerds are the coolest!
