  1. Haveing my 60csx for a few weeks now, I can say that I would not enter the woods without a real compass. I like the compass and its nice as it orients me when I'm not moving but trust it I dont (in the car anyway, where there's lots of metal to mess it up). I haven't tried it out walking and it may be fine for that, now that I think of it. You need to keep it level to the ground for it to work though I think.

I love my barametric pressure trend plot....You can even see when you open can close your car windows going down the highway..LOL

I'm glad I got those features but as I said, no substitute for a real, no calibratin, North pointing manual compass.

Had my 60CSX for several weeks now. Never had a compass problem, works great. Loving it, wouldn't trade for anything. :)

    The same thing.

I haven't fully tested the compass yet, but happy with the feature, and also very happy with the ambient pressure sensor.

    I wouln't leave my 60CSx for a 60CX.

    Matter of personal choice.

  2. Sounds like a battery problem more than a gps problem. I dont think NiMH can source enough current, even in a shorted condition for them to get so hot as to melt plastic. (If I'm wrong someone correct me please). If the batteries were damaged due to overcharging or something like that then maybe the internals wer compramised. Has she ever had any battery problems before?

I haven't heard of that. I use the 15-minute NiMH 2500 Energizer rechargeables in my Vista C and have used them successfully for months now. I love being able to get "fresh" batteries in only 15 minutes.

What kind of batteries were they?

kb9nvh - try blowing up the image - IMHO I doubt very much it's a structural column its just floating up at roof level

Well, there's lots in that pic that needs explaining but I can talk myself into beliveing that the two white things in the google photgraph are the structural legs of the tower...see my arrows. I could be wrong so I think we can at least agree that the picture doesn't do the tower justice (and I cant see the rides!!). :-)

  4. Course is important when flying or boating when you are trying to avoid areas/obsticals. The course line is what you intended to follow from the last waypoint..if you get off then the bearing is the most direct direction to get to the next waypoint but you will be off course and if that course was important for some reason then you may run aground or pass through restricted airspace.

I'm not a pilot but it seems to me that the best thing to do is to leave it on bearing. Since you've laid out a course that will take you from waypoint to waypoint, the bearing arrow always points to the next waypoint destination. So as you're flying around, you can always see the direct route to the next waypoint.

Course and all that stuff is OK for sailing where you have to tack due to wind, something you're not worried about in a helio.

PS: Show the bearing square so the actual degrees to the waypoint is displayed so you can tell it to the pilot.

  5. That zone of white space is actually the only Piece of a tower leg that is visible. Look that the ground views of the tower and you can see how it is built on three legs...that white thing is one of them..

Looks like the intersection of several aerial piccies - just happens to co-incide with the tower - shame but it's bound to happen. There's a zone of white space at an angle right across the tower - the only part of Las Vegas not actually built on <_<

I dont see any red coaster in a circle sorry, I just cant see it?

Here's the base which is what we see in the google shot:

    strat2.jpg

It's there. It's the round thing.

Well, you can see a small part of the top, but most of it is missing (the way they merged successive pictures (from different perspective) caused the surrounding building to overlay the tower. Look for (the missing) rides on the top of the tower.

I don't knwo what you;re talking about. It's all there. Look at this image:

And then comapre it to the aerial shot. It's all there. You can see the roller coaster on the aerial.

  7. Yup, I gave him positive feedback although I was fearing the worst...especailly when all the outpost folks were getting thiers (after I cancelled my order). Paid 10 bucks more than outpost and fastmemoryman took 7 days for it to ship from ohiio to indiana.

How do you know he shippied yours the next day?

HA, mine came today...sorry "fastmemoryman". You got it here as promised (but his communication was poor and his shipping is so high that if you return it he wont refund shipping and so he gets enough to make money anyway).

I got a 1GB microSD card from 'fastmemoryman' on ebay. $67 shipped.

Payment on the 23rd, shipped on the 24th, delivered on the 29th.

yes, communication was very poor, but it was delivered as promised.

  8. Anyone notice the stratosphere tower has a shadow but no tower???

    N36° 8'50.52" W115° 9'18.62"

weird... Am I"m missing something or did google erase the tower for security purposes?

Go to N36 08 42.01 W115 10 51.03 in Google Earth. Zoom in real close. I think those are kids riding scooters or skateboards. This is 3" resolution imagery from March 2006. Amazing, huh? Notice the difference in resolution of the imagery, left side vs. right. Link to Google Earth message board announcement.

I'm loading 970Mb right now using the card reader and it says it will take about 1/2 hour.

    With I had a 2 gig card now..LOL

I bought from "fastmemoryguy"...looks like a big mistake. His NEGs are mounting aothough he has many positives.

I've not seen my chip for 6 days and they say they ship as soon as payment is made. Also, no response to my two emails so far.

Now it loooks like there are those who have them in stock and are shipping them (the reason I went with fast memory man and cancled outpost).

That always happens to me when I switch lines at the grocery too..LOL..

  11. I lookd for your auction and cant find it..was wondering how good of feedback TSystemonline

has/had? For some reason I find no auctions for TSystemonline. Can you give me a link to your auction.

I'm still waiting on ebay "fastmemoryman" to ship mine..purchased last thursday and they say they ship same day as payment??? Only been 3 business days so no worries. Funny, this guy ships from ohio and I'm in Indiana but still get charged like 15 british pounds (like 25 bucks shipping). Sounds like he's scamming ebay for shipping. Anyway, the final price was in line so I bought.

    Hope it gets here soon.

is ebay shipping now? They have them in stock?

Just received mine from Ebay (TSystemonline). Loaded 950 mb of maps via card reader then to my Cx60. Works perfectly!

  13. Yep, be sure you threashold is set correctly...north up all the time above a certain resolution and below that I like track up...one of the great features over my old gpsV that this unit has...

I updated software on my 60 csx to version 2.60 last night. I went out to grab a couple of caches and could not get unit to change from north up to track up. I like using my unit so the top of screen is the direction I am going. I changed the setting in the map set up to track up but unit is still in North up mode. What am I missing? Can someone please help?

    Thanks

I have a 60cx with 2.60 and it works fine for me.

I press the menu button in the map view and then select Setup Map. Then in the first tab, I select Orientation to be "Track Up" and make sure the "Below" option is set to the correct map level I want to do that. If I'm above that level (eg. 12 mi), then the map will show N on top.

  14. Yes, so will the CD's copy for backup purposes or not?

I was planning on including a copy of my mapsource when I sold my GPSV which itis unlocked to...but now I'm not sure that such a good idea....

I'm not looking for free maps. Yes it would be nice if Garmin included the maps with the GPSr (Which they do IE. the base maps) ,but I know they wouldn't have the same quality and features as they do. All I'm saying is it would be nice to be able to transfer the maps that I have from the GPSr that I sell to the new Gpsr I buy.

I'm assuming that the licensing agreement will not allow me to make copy's of the disks that the software is on. To me this brings up another problem. If I sell my GPSr to someone there is no practical or legal way to include the maps that are unlocked for that unit. I can't give them my copy because I still need it and I can't make them a copy because I'm not supposed to. This makes that unlock completely useless.

  15. So the basemaps ARE different in the csx versions...I guess since I always have mapsource maps loaded its a non-issue though..you can only see one map type at a time anyway, right?

I have been looking at my next GPS and am looking at the 60CSX or the 76CSX

In the UK the 76CSX is £418.94 inc vat which includes a 128 SD card .. the 60CSX is £398.94 inc vat with a 64 MB SD .. but thats as far as I can see the difference

So ignoring the form factor and the 128M card V 64M card ... help me .... whats the difference ???

I did a lot of research into both models and the difference is in the base maps. Garmin sell the 76CSx as a marine one based on the fact it floats and the inbuilt marine database of POI's. I have the Atlantic charts and these have all that info when uploaded.

I went in the end for the 60CSx as I preferred the button config and it is more suitable as an outdoor all rounder IMHO. I actually downloaded both manuals and went through them page by page and there is no difference in the functioality.... So, unless the card size is an issue got for the one you think will feel ok for you.

  16. Iv'e had my old gps V do that sort of thing...not yet on the 60csx though. Usually it was due to me not having all the mapselect maps in for the area I was autorouting on. IN fact, just last weekent I put in the maps from indiana to oklahoma and accidentally missed the corner of a map that had effingham IL which also included about 15 miles of I-70. No matter what I did I could not get the 60csx to route me though effingham (even though the base map includes I-70.

I think the gps should be smarter than that...after I got home I added the missing map and now autorouting works as expected..

I tried the autorouting with my 60CSx this morning going to work. I work just off of the freeway. When I was about 6 miles from work the 60CSX told me to take the next exit which is no where close to my job. I had the options set for "follow road" and "shorter distance". Once I passed the exit it recalculated to the correct exit. I never lost contact with the satellites so I wonder why it prompted me to take the wrong exit. It wasn't a faster or shorter alternative.

Anyone else had problems with auto routing?

    Thanks

  17. ONe guy said he got his on ebay, another guy said he had bad luck with that seller...

Okay... two different people saying that they have 1GB microSD cards... but still not a link to buy them at.

Where are you folks getting them at? I'll cancel my order from Outpost.com in a heartbeat if someone can tell me where I can order one overnight and have it Monday from...

  18. I have one and its a two handed operation for me....In fact, unless you know the technique it wont come out at all.

Maybe the one handed guy knows something we dont or he's got incredibually strong hands..LOL

I hate to disagree, but I can get my 60c out of this mount with one hand, regardless of whether the power is plugged in or not. If you put your thumb on the little tab on top and push back while pushing in with your finger tips on the vertical part of the mount, it will flex and release the unit.

I just tried it with one hand. Nope... I need two hands. With one hand I need to push on the little tab and push on the vertical part of the mount with my fingers to flex it, as you say, and also push the unit down with my other hand. Sample variation? Maybe if I take a dremel tool to the top to loosen it up? I have a 60Cx.

  19. Well great...glad I used a credit card instead of direct on paypal..

Hope mine comes..it seems most are OK with his deals but a good percentage have problems. If its just coming from ohio I wonder about his sources..must be grey market or something since all the legit vendors are out of these.

I ordered one from fastmemoryman and never got it. They kept telling me it takes 5 to 15 days to get it and would not address the fact that it should not take that long to get from OH to IL. It seemed like no matter what I said to them, all they would do is tell me it takes 5 to 15 days no matter where it is shipped. After I threatened to leave them negative feedback, they gave me a refund. I then bought one from dz_corp@yahoo.com and got it in a couple of days. The one from fastmemoryman never showed up. I also thought 5-15 days was not fast like they advertised. I will never use them again.

  20. Seems like it wouldnt' be that hard for garmin to "put back in" if enough requested it.

I could add a via to a route on my garmin V but I cant seem to find that option on my new 60csx.

Anyone know where it went of if its even on this unit???

That feature didn't make it into the 60/76C(CS) units either for some reason or other. I think the V is the only handheld that did have it. Someone in their wisdom must have decided that users did not need it. :) There are a couple of other features the V had that I really miss in my 76C. I can't remember what they are but I recall being disappointed when I first got the 76C and found it was without.

    Olar

The lack of via is one of my only true disappointments on my 76CS too. I am used to using via's with my old GPS puck and Delorme Street Atlas and my laptop. It is more intuitive to say "use route 95" for me than to say, "go here but make certain you stop here" that is required with waypoints. The other tihing I discovered is that if I selected a way point on a divided highway, that unless I was very careful in selecting the correct lane, that my 76CS would start telling me to take u-turns and it would beep all the time trying to get me back to that waypoint... Lacking a via tool is not helpful at all.

  21. "select maps around routes" I'll look for that..it was really a problem on the way to oklahoma and back as there was no way I could find (while driving) to get it to rout on I70 because it was missing the effingham, IL map square. I think it should have been smart enough to use the basemap for the 15 missing miles of I70.

The VIA options works like this..you choose an endpoint and have it autoroute. When you see that the route is not the one you wanted you go to the "turn" page and then hit menu. You have the option of adding a via to your route here. After you add the via then the route is recalculated and the via is guarenteed to be in the path.

Can you explain in a little more detail what it was you were doing on the GPS V? I ask because I've created several routes with numerous via points on the similar VistaC unit, no computer involved. It's a mode that isn't really described in the documentation, and it may not be what you're looking for - which is why I'm asking. I haven't played around too much with this, as most of the time I can set up routes in Mapsource, which is always easier. BTW, there is a "Select all maps around route" menu option within Mapsource that may help if you're having a problem with that.

  22. Outpost just emailed me on my 1GB micro sd order and says they're on back order and dont know when they will have them. I cancelled and ordered one off ebay for 67bucks delivered

A local Seattle area retailer (Fry's in Renton) is advertising a SanDisk 1G Micro SD card for $39 ($59 - $20 rebate). Looks like the market will be pushing the price down for these now.

I just checked with Fry's and they had the miniSD not the microSD on sale.

    Before you buy check.

The miniSD 1GB is now $26.50 after rebate. I'm going to tell my son, he uses them in his phone.
