  1. You might consider one of garmins "aircraft" models. I haven't looked in a while but the ones about 2 years ago had all the functionality of the 76 including autorouting and it added aircraft navigation functions. If you dont fly then maybe not so important but I found mine interesting when flying commercial because you always knew why you weren't flying towards your destination cause you were heading towards some "navaid" out there. Also, you always knew when you were entering restricted airspace.

Kinda irritating when driving..LOL heading up the road and then it flashes that a restricted airspace is ahead. As a X pilot (possibly will take it back up later in life) I liked having that stuff.

I am looking for a new gpsr to replace a Vista C that was stolen out of my car. I had the vista for almost 2 years, but as I used it for more and more activities, I realized I wanted something more capable. The new gpsr will be used in the car, on the water, and in the woods.

Accuracy is the most important feature I am looking for, followed by durability as a close second. The unit must be waterproof and have a long battery life. The MicroSD cards in the Garmin x series are a plus, but in the absense of removable storage, the new unit must have adequate onboard memory.

I am not particularly concerned with what the unit will cost. I am looking for the best unit to fit my needs, regardless of price. Is there a handheld out there that offers more utility and accuracy than the Garmin 60/76csx?

Right now, I am strongly considering the Garmin 76csx, but if something better exists I would like to know! Additionally, if there is a non-handheld unit that is reasonably portable and offers superior performance, I would be willing to consider that as well, provided it has good battery life.

  2. OK, just do what 75% of us did and get the 60csx (then wait for garmin to

fix the few bugs that still exsist like altimeter screwing up).

Get the 60CSX and then add mapsource city select (or is it navigator) and

order a 1 gig transflash card (or live with the 60meg oem until the 2 gigs

    come out).

Also, get a ram mount for your car

    60csx $400

    mapsource $110

    transflash 1g $40

    Ram mount $60.

dadgum, do I have that much into my GPS???

    :-)

Okay - still studying here on which unit to get. For our son we are going with a color screen and we want expandable memory so we are looking at these models: Magellan 500, and Garmins eTrex CX, GPSMAP 60 CSX, or GPSMAP 76 CSX units.

    My questions are:

For the Mag 500 - you can take a blank SD card and download a map onto the SD card and then insert the card into the GPS and use as needed? Correct? Also, where do you get the maps to download onto the card and do they cost extra?

For the Garmin GPS units that I have listed - you can only buy a Pre-Loaded SD card to insert into the units?

This has turned into quite a chore for me. ^_^

    Thnx!!

  3. Wow, prices are dropping fast on these..I paid like 435 for my 60csx chumbo had them for like 415. Now down below 400. Wonder how low they will go before they stablize?

the sale lasts until tomorrow. you can order it online too.

I'm sure you can get it a bit less elsewhere but not with EMS's reputation. you can return anything ANYTIME!

    http://www.ems.com/catalog/subcategory_sim...D=1146326629420

there are a lot of places that their regular price is 399 or around there. gpsdiscount.com has them for 399 everyday. And they are super fast.

  4. A "mini" SD card wont fit but a "micro" SD does fit (transflash) and they dont make 2 gig cards yet as far as I know. The unit comes with a 64MB card so I really think you meant 1GB and not 1MB.

Anyway, get a 1Gig transflash (microSD) card for about 30bucks after rebate or wait for the 2 gig version...It is suppoesed to work but know one knows for sure. The 1 gigs do work.

I am looking for guidance regarding the purchase of a Micro SD Digital Card for my Garmin GPSMap60CSx. I've read some success stories about 1MB cards but I can't find any Garmin documentation on recommendations. Does anyone have experiences with a 1GB card that might help with my purchase? Card brand and model information would be helpful too. Thanks.

  5. If its anything like my new 60csx it has the next turn ready for you in just a second or two. I think the 2710 is as fast or faster.

How long does the Street pilot take to re-calculate a new route after you make a wrong turn?

Can you enter caching waypoints? How?

  6. Well, I know that if I get on a plane and fly to CA from Indiana it has a hard time locking up when I get there unless I do the "move the pointer to where I am" to get it started trick. Also, if you leave your gps without batteries for a while it will be super stupid and mine even came up and prompted me (gps V) if I had left it stored without batteries and if so I think it has to go through some SUPER "figureing out where it is" routine. So, did you do any of those things?

I was recently in Spain and took my GPS along. But, not once did I receive a signal. Any input on why this happened would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  7. What I want is the entire city select mapset in my card..2GB. What I have now is the 1GB card and half the us installed. I do travel for work so I need boston to huntsville to el paso and more.

What I need is really much less since USB allows much faster map loading. With the bigger cards your buying convenience.

Honestly, what you need is the abiltiy to have everymap installed from your orgin to destination so that autorouting can work correctly. Only you know how much memory you absolutly need.

I have a 512 in mine. I would have liked to have got a 1 gig card but I ran into a deal on this 512 at Staples that I couldn't pass up. With rebates coupons and a sale I got the card for $5 and change! Right now I have about 450 mb of maps on it.

  8. Hey, so what is the best tool for looking at my tracklog and view elevation and times???

    I ahve a garmin 60csx

The compass is helpful if you want to determine the direction to a cache without haing to move. The altieter/barometeer is an extra feature that is nice to have, but wholly unnecessry for caching. It can graph yoyu elevatin over time and distance, and tell you if the weather is going to get bad (falling-raising pressure). But keep in mind that these are both gadgets. However, I believe the Legend Cx is $239 while the vista is $350. However, if you buy from Backpacker.com, you can get US TOPO map discs for $10 more, a $115 value. Also, like otyhers have said, you get an elevation tracklog, which plots you elevation and point on a map. Even, it can show good hunting and fishing times for the day. If I were you, I'd pay the $5 extra and get the vista cx over the legend cx.

  9. Their must be a regulator in there to convert external volages to what the gps wants to see. You normally want to avoid putting battery voltage through a regulator since the regulator will steal about 0.2 to 0.7 volts right off the top.

So I guess my only question is this. Why is it that my 60csx will run perfectly fine on the 4.5v coming from the usb port on my computer or the 12v coming from cigarette lighter in my car for that matter? It seems to me that the 3.4v from fresh non-frozen lithiums would be o.k. I'm sure there is some simple answer to this but I was just wondering.

Lithium anode batteries are the NEW technology and researchers are trying hard to find ways around thier limitation since they have such a high energy density.

I just don't understand the discussion about not being able to use lithium batteries in the 60CSx. Sure, the lithium batteries may perform a little longer in cold weather; however, I have used NiMh batteries in cold weather with good results. I'm not trying to flame anyone, but some people just need to get over it...lithium batteries are old technology...plain and simple.

  10. Of the two (compass and altimeter) I like the pressure trend readout. I never had that before and its neat to watch a storm come in (pressure drop) and then rise again as it goes out. Pressure drop can give you an indiation of stormy weather so I like it. The compass is nice to have, but I find myself always questioning its accuracy. I would want a "real" compass in any case.

I used to have a 60C, and thought the compass and altimeter were things I'd never need. After getting the chance to use a Magellan with a compass in it, I decided the next time to go with a 60CSx. The altimeter doesn't do me any good, but the ability to have the GPS continue pointing me to the cache without my having to keep wandering around so it knows where I'm going was worth the extra cost for me. But, of course, your mileage may very. If you don't want to spend that much and don't mind a little inconvenience, a real compass only costs $10 or so, and you should have one with you anyway "just in case." :D

  11. Do you honestly expect a 10 yr old piece of technology to work as well as todays? Back when these were built I remember a friend bought one and let me borrow it. The thing never did lock in the twenty minutes I had it on my dashboard. They recieved NON simultanious reception of the birds. These things were the early answer to gps but nothing like just a few years later then the receivers that could track 12 birds simultaniously were introduced.

You can get a bargan on some of the "newer" 12ch units today. That old 45 was first generation. Much like the old 286 PC's...not a serious tool and especially when you see whats out there today.

IMO drop that old unit and pick up one of the older 12ch models (lowrance gps100 or something like it..there are many out there).

    Good Luck

I'm starting to think that, while these have many nice features, the general accuracy is doomed. Can someone explain WHY? Was it built with deficiencies. I thought the "scramble" was with the satellites, and was cured, and the signal available should be equal to all.

  12. Funny, It happened to me just this afternoon...was thinking of posting on here.. You beat me to it.

Ok, I'm new to this so bear with me, beer with me too! I just got my 60 Csx, I calibrate the Altimiter and within seconds it starts to run away. I mean it goes from actual (122ft) to 180 then down to 50 or 60 then up to 160....I just uploaded 2.60 haven't put 2.62 on yet.

  13. Humm, I get a "compression error" when I run the install???

    anyone else?

    http://www.grimlabs.com/bablerror.jpg

I have been waiting for this.

I have only been playing with it for about 10 minutes, so far it works great with my Legend Cx.

Just in time for my big Easter road trip this coming weekend.

If you own a Garmin X series GPSr, you now have the opportunity to Beta test support for your device.

There are also some other Garmin devices that were not previously supported by GSAK.

For more information please see http://www.gsak.net/board/index.php?showto...indpost&p=10386

  14. I love the ram mounts...Mine is a suction cup for the windshield.

expensive though but very moveable. and no worries about coming loose.

The option that I use a lot is the bean bag mount. I laughed when I saw those at the store, but it came in the package deal, so I tried it. Now my 60 CSx is in the bean bag mount more than it is out. Makes it great when hooked to the computer, or if just trying to learn all the features it just sits on the arm of my recliner.

    hmmm ... good idea !

  15. I think they are more concerned about being robbed or haveing their cars vandalised more than getting dirty. I know when I picked up my sister in law from the greyhouud bus station in st louis at 3am I was surprised to see 20 yr olds rideing their bicycles around the sidewalks in the neighborhood and also having folks begging from me at that hour.

Didn't seem to be a very safe area to be in. It would be nice to have those types of areas that are known for crime to be routed around. Nothing to do with poor...everything to do with safety of my family.

Maybe you should get the new software for rich people, which only contains approved well-maintained, clean, and high-class roads. Then you don't have to worry about getting your shiny shoes dirty.

    Jamie

  16. I would like to see them release another beta with more features....heck, 2.62 works fine for me so far...not issues that I have seen.

I want them to add back some of my old gpsV features though (add via to route, hotkey for navigation to "HOME", I also would like more realestate on the map screen...maybe they could add another map screen that saves different display options than the first that would be easy to flip back and fourth to.

Geez Didjerrydo, try the Decafe. Garmin can't win with some people. If they release an update, even a Beta, people complain that it is Beta. If they wait to include additional fixes within the update people complain that it is taking too long. I am happy to get the fixes as they resolve them. If I can’t get the whole loaf, I will certainly take a couple of slices.

I completely agree with SandyGarrity. In the IT world 1 month is certainly not a long time… how long do we have to wait for Microsoft to come out with some their “fixes”?

  17. I agree, I just upgraded from a gpsV and I miss my "add via to route" feature and my "hit find twice to go to the HOME waypoint" feature. I never used detour on my V and I'm not sure how it would work..I know you told it to stay off your normal route for "X" number of miles and then it would resume. I think my csx recalcluates fast enough that it is a good enough substitute for the detour option.

I want my VIA option though!!! Garmin..doyouhearme!!!

They USED to have a "Detour" feature whereby you could tell the GPSr to find an alternate route. That was on the GPS V, but it is not on any of the newer models. I doubt very seriously that they would go so far as to prompt you when they won't even let you tell it you want an alternate.

Yes, I remember & used to use that feature.

I did question [here] about that feature NOT being available in my 60c?? <_<

Selecting yes would have it plan an alternate route using back streets. This would be very handy. Heck, it could even read the clock when planning a route and avoid taking major roads during rush hour.

That is an excellent intuitive feature that would NO DOUBT be useful! :P

  18. city select has smaller map segments so you can pick and choose your areas more easily.

Navigator has much larger areas and I think some have said that there are areas that wont fit into a 64meg card?

All of city select maps use about 1.5Gig (I have a one gig card and have eastern US to Elpaso give or take

do a search on city navigator and It hink you can find some info on the two on these forums

OK, I am leaning towards a 60csx, and going to a local REI for return/warranty policies...

    Few questions on the 60csx.

Did I understand someone to say that while hooked up to my computer via USB cable, that the gps is using computer power (as opposed to battery power)..?? I was hoping that some day Garmin would be able to charge batteries in the GPS while being plugged into a 12 volt adapter, but don't that's available yet.

Seems like people are split between City Select and City Navigator for software, correct..?? I think I have seen a few more people like the feel of City Select..?? I imagine there is a website that lists the size (in MB) for City Select Map sizes..??!!

Does the unit come with MapSource or any software..?? Most of my map usage will be on City Streets, but I will go on mountain trails prolly 5 -10% of the time.

I have a 512 MB card that I think will fit. I live in central California. Does 512 mb hold a large metropolitan City, or an entire state..??

    Thanks

  19. I'm confused...why do I need the POI loader (that pops up automatically when I plug in my csx) when I have the mapsource software? Dont both allow the uploading of POI's...now that I think of it, maybe mapsource doesn't do this...??

I need a good FAQ on the way memory is used in the gps....the use of POI's and waypoints and loading maps and proximity alarms.

Has anyone figured out how to apply a proximity to a POI? I mean before they are loaded. i.e. in the file loaded by POILoader.

Well, I haven't tested this in the field by driving by one, but I will tomorrow on my way to work. When you have your "X" connected to the PC and power it on, the POI Loader opens (as you know). Once you point to the folder where your POIs are, you will see the "What units should be used for ditance and speed?". I have mine set to Feet and MPH. Then, below that box you have a choice for Manual, or Express. Choose Manual. You will then check the box that says "This file contains proximity alert points". I did not pick the Speed option, but entered 500 feet in the "Alert at this distance". I'm thinking this will now give a tone prompt when I get within the 500 feet I set. It is not quite the same as seeing a proximity circle but it will set all the designated POI waypoints to a proximity distance. Again, I say this but have not tested it in the field. A drawback to have your POIs this way is your comment field can not have any of your hints, etc. It puts in two items. One line reads: Alarm Range: 499ft (in my case when I specified 500 feet), and Alarm Speed: Unknown (in my case because I didn't assign a speed).

  20. really, I thought this was the opposite??? I need to get rid of my blue flags too....I havne't tried yet. Is it in the manual or is it just on the way point page?

Can it be set up so the default waypoint marker is something diffeerent than the blue flag?

On the arrow thing, you most likely have is set to "Course pointer" instead of "Bearing Pointer". Course pointer point to the "Course" and not the destination. Make sure it is set to "Bearing".
