  1. I just watched Blood Diamond tonight ( a couple years after the first post) and keyed the coords into Google Earth. The coords translate to this location: N 37 30.362 W 93 52.968. I entered the coords of 0905424 N 327293050 E directly into Google Earth. Have fun!
  2. Having problems with the glue releasing or letting go from the rubber surround on an Etrex Model GPS? I am a Garmin Dealer and I have ordered the following parts to repair my backup GPSrs. The problem as you know is that the glue releases from the rubber surround on the Legend C series GPSrs and then the surround seems to float around the unit. My Garmin Rep. said it was okay to publish these part numbers. If you are having trouble, order the parts from Garmin and fix your GPSr yourself. The parts are really inexpensive. Here are the Garmin part numbers for the rubber surround and the glue strips: 249-00069-01 and 414-00041-06 Order both parts, install them and your Legend C series will be as good as new. Techwiz
  3. I have 2 Legends, a 60CSx and a StreetPilot 2820. If you are going to get a new GPSr, there is no question that the 60CSx is the best unit on the market. The Colorado and the Oregon are great if you want to have the paperless caching feature built into the GPSr itself. If you have a Palm (I use a Palm IIIxe) or other pocket pc or if you prefer to use the printouts then go with the 60CSx. My friends have the Oregon and love it, but I get better accuracy with the 60CSx because of the external quad-helix antenna. If you want the GPSr for accuracy then don't even think about it - get the 60CSx. For me, the accuracy while caching is more important than having the printouts on the same unit.
  4. Something messed up there and submitted the post 3 times. Sorry about that.
  5. The Geo-IP was working great for a couple of days, but for the last week and a half it has me located in Washington State - The same as what some other people are seeing. It's off by over 3000 miles. I am in Ontario, Canada. Anything I can do on my end. I am on a home network and not at a business. Techwiz...

  7. First of all, I want to thank all of the people and programmers at Geocaching.com for all of the hard work they do everyday to help us to enjoy this game more. I know that in a few days all of the bugs will be worked out and that the site will be very close to perfect just the way that everything worked out a few months ago when the mapping section was upgraded. I do have a couple of things that I would like to have changed as well. 1) When I scroll the mouse over the link/menu choices on the left of the page (Getting Started etc) all of the choices flash on and of as they are rolled over. If I move the mouse quickly, the selection will flash off and stay off (bug) until I roll quickly over all of the selections again. I personally don't like the flashing menu/link selections. I prefer that the link just changes colour. Just remove the flashing and leave the color change with the grey and it would look great for me. 2) I preferred the "Logged in as" USERNAME and Log Out link in the yellow color much better than the grey that it is now. Kind of nit-picky but the yellow color stuck out much better. 3) There seems to be a lot of white space on the site's pages. Where it seems to be most concerning to me is on the "My Account Details"page. All of the entries for the last 30 days used to fit on the screen at 1024x768 and only required 1 or 2 lines to display. Now the entries are allowed a much narrower space and take 2,3 or 4 lines to display. With the previous layout the narrower columns on the left and right of the screen and the thinner white border around a page's edges, I was able to easily see more info with less scrolling down the page. It looks like the site has been optimized for the new widescreen monitors or those running 1280x1024. Although I can run 1280x1024 I prefer the larger text size and higher refresh rates allowed at 1024x768. For LCD monitors the refresh rate is not an issue but with a CRT monitor the higher refresh rate and larger text size is easier on the eyes. I am sure that a lot of us are using 17" CRT monitors as opposed to the newer, larger widescreen LCD monitors. Thanks for your consideration of these requests.
  8. I have been looking all over and I cannot locate the forum for the flag and geocaching icons. I am sorry to bother you as I know you are very busy, but if you know the forum name or have a link to it could you please let me know? Thanks a million.
  9. Wow! Beautiful job you people are doing. I am amazed at the fact that you look at everyone's requests and strive to give us all what we want! Amazing coding job!!! I like the fact that you have allowed us to select the size of map we want. I also like the PQ button on the map page. I have only played with it for a few minutes since I just got home from work, but I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your hard work and coding excellence! Thanks a lot. I know that you are working on getting everything working perfectly and giving everyone what they want and need. Thanks for being diligent and for being a perfectionist. Fabulous job!
  10. Thank you for the great work that you have completed in a very short time!!! I think that the idea to have the filters as a pop up would be a GREAT feature! There would be more room for the map. I don't know if this is possible but being able to store personal filter settings would be great as well so that the filters would not have to be clicked each time the map is loaded. Seeing a bigger map, like the previous version, would be great too. A bigger map is the main thing I would like to see. Thank you very much for devoting so much time and coding skill to make this site one of the best there is, with the features that the people that play this game are really wanting. GREAT JOB!!!

    Send to GPS

There is a bug currently with loading the cache to the GPSr and having it show as a blue flag (or something else) instead of a closed cache container - minor problem - just go into the waypoint info and change the icon. You could change the flag to a cache box, or tell the GPSr to use the blue flag icon for unfound caches and leave the open cache box for the found ones. (This would be a pain though if you had downloaded a ton of caches). The description of the cache is also missing. There are a few bugs to work out but I am sure it will be more useful than the previous map when it is done.
  12. I like the new map, but I also likee being able to print the old map and show the locations of the caches with numbers on the tags and the description on the side. Take a few minutes to use the new map and get used to it. Don't trash a new thing just because you haven't played with it enough. You can see more than 20 caches at the same time, you can filter out what you don't need, you can click on a cach and see if it has any trackable in it without opening the cache page, you can see a larger area. All of these things are good. The only thing i miss is printing the page with the caches numbered and the listing posted on the side. There is also a problem with loading the cache to the GPSr and having it show as a blue flag instead of a closed cache container - minor problem - I just go into the waypoint and change the icon. (This would be a pain thoug if you had downloaded a ton of caches). The description of the cache is also missing. Good job on the map though - just a few bugs to work out.
  13. Garmin does not redevelop a new GPS every quarter and the technology pretty much remains the same. You said yourself that the MediaTek improvement is about the same price so that the two units remain at the same retail (since the CX has the value add of the SD card). What is your complaint really? I have noticed that you have only found 3 caches since May. I have noticed that you are very negative on every board that I have seen your posts on. Which GPS do you have and what are you using it for? Do you have a genuine concern or are you just bellyaching for the sake of bellyaching?
  14. I stand corrected. One of the reviews I read some time ago had it wrong and stated that the antenna in the 76 was a patch. It is in fact an internal quad helix antenna.
  15. From the first post I think that you are asking bout having the map show while walking instead of the bearing/course arrow. Just hit the menu button (bottom left button) a couple of times from the arrow page - you will be back at the menu - then press the page button (top right side) and there is the map. As you get closer to the cache then press the page button again and you will get the course/bearing screen (arrow) and there you go. As far at the maps go, for geocaching you do not really need them. There will be no streets in the bush and auto routing on a road will be useless to you. The maps are a necessity if you are going to use the GPSr for navigation in your car. As far as the SD card side you dont really need a 2GB card unless you are going to save and archive a rediculous number of tracks. With City Navigator North America NT you can fit all of North America, Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii - down to street level with addresses on less than 1 GB (960Mb). For most people the 64MB card that comes with the CX will be plenty unless you travel a lot unless you can get the 2 GB card cheaper than a 1 GB card. As far as the TOPO maps go, check on Garmin's website and look at the maps in their viewer. See if they cover the areas where you will be. Most trails are not on the TOPO maps (I'm in Canada) - so you will just get contours for elevation - which your GPS will give you if you have a 4 satellite lock (not as accurate as a map though). However, I really don't care about the elevation. If there is a hill and I have to go up it - I go up it. The height of the hill doesn't matter. I have a StreetPilot 2820 and 2 Legend CXs. I have full maps (City Navigator North America NT Ver 8) loaded into the StreetPilot and one of the Legends. For caching, it makes no difference which legend I use.
  16. Man, you are the most negative person that I have read on these forums. The Legend HCX has only been available for a very short time. In Canada only a couple of weeks. Generally financial reporting is done once per quarter and would be based on Garmin's fiscal year. If you don't like Garmin then get a Magellan or any other brand you might like. Stop chewing about Garmin and get what you want and be happy. Then have fun loading caching waypoints into your unit as Garmin, so far, is the only company to look after the geocaching community and develop a free web app to allow you to load your wayponts from the geocaching.com site. If you really have a problem then call Garmin - their customer service is great! But really, quit whining about the price of GPS units. You have the ability to choose and buy whatever you want.
  17. Another reason is that the antennas in the two units are different. The 76CSX uses a patch antenna which is great for marine use - the intended use of the 76. The 60CSX uses a quad helix antenna the works better in tree canopy. The 76 floats and the 60 does not. The buttons on the top of the 76 are great when mounted on a low dashboard on a boat and you are standing (like when you are fishing). The 60 is designed for mainly handheld use. Hope that might give you some insight into what to choose.
  18. Really, when I read what most of you are saying I have to laugh. When a product is produced there are costs involved and the manufacturer needs to see ROI (return on investment) in order to remain profitable. Some of you are saying that having the CX at the same price as the HCX is crazy and that they should drop the price of the CX. Really, what you are saying is that you would feel comfortable if Garmin was to raise the price of the HCX in order to compensate for the high capability receiver provided by the MediaTek chipset. It seems odd to me that you would be okay with the price of another unit being higher priced. Perhaps you should write to Garmin and ask them to increase the price of the HCX so that you can feel good about spending the amount of money on the CX. Honestly, The only reason that you are complaining about the price is that you only want to buy the CX - and you want it cheap. If you wanted the HCX you would be praising Garmin for delivering new advanced technology to you at the same price as the earlier unit. You are upset because you feel that you should now be able to get a CX "dirt cheap" because the new model has been released at the same price as the previous model. If enough of you call Garmin and ask them to increase the price, I am sure that they will. Then you will all be happy. By the way, The MediaTek chipset that Garmin is using in the HCX product has a cost of about $10.00 when bought in quantity - roughly the same as the price that they would have paid for the SD cards in the CX model.
  19. The difference is that Garmin includes the Micro SD card with the CX. There is no card with the HCX. You have your choice depending on your usage. If you are using this unit for navigation then you are in a relatively clear area and would use the SD card, however the high sensitivity chipset would not be needed. If the unit is being used for geocaching then there is greater need for the high sensitivity chipset for use under heavy tree canopy. Most of the people that I know that do geocaching dont have full maps loaded into their GPSr. So, currently Garmin, right now anyway, allows you to choose the unit that is best for you.
