  1. I've been a coal geologist for the past 19 years. I've got BS and MS degrees in gelogy, and a PhD specializing in paleobotany and palynology. I've found a number of EC, but have yet to put one out (though I have several in progress).

  2. It's really not me -- I wouldn't be able to start a new thread or make posts if I couldn't log in, could I? :P

I gave her this link (to a new gmail address) so she can hopefully find some answers.

    Thanks, all.

  3. A fried of mine (it's not me, really) has a problem with getting back into her gc.com account. She lost her computer, which she had her password and no where else), and had canceled the email account (charter.net) that she was receiving gocaching emails at. Is she SOL or is there some method to get her password somehow. I suggested that if she can't get the password back that she could open a new account and reenter all her logs (about 100), but this sounds like a lot of work if there is an easier way.

Any suggestions would help a lot. Thanks.

  4. My Garmin 60csx seems to have lost its accuracy. At first I thought it was others making a slight mistake but after a couple dozen you start looking in a mirror. Any suggestions on how to fix it, if that's even possible. Makes Geocaching that much harder if your off by about 20 ft.

If you're only off by 20, then I'd say that is within acceptable error. If you start finding all of the caches you find are all systematically off by 50 to 100 feet in the same direction, then there may be a problem.

After I find that I'm within 20-30 feet of where the cache is supposed to be, I turn off the gpsr and just start looking everywhere within a 30 to 50 foot radius.

    YMMV. :(

  5. Is the act of logging the comments I see at the bottom of the cache page? That's what I did for the this DNF cache. Is that correct? Thanks.

Your DNF post looks just fine. Although the cache page lists this cache as a 1.5 in difficulty, about 13% who have looked for it have posted DNFs. I'd say that it is harder than it says. Keep trying -- you'll find it. I've been back to caches that I didn't find 5 or 6 times -- but then I enjoy looking.

  6. OK, I have a question that is sort of related. Let's say that I'm creating a multi in a park that has no other caches within say a mile or two. Can the stages of the multi be less than 0.1 mile from each other? I'm considering a multi where the stages may only be 100 feet apart or less. I understand that if not placed properly, one stage may be found when looking for another one, but this won't be an issue. I'm just wondering about the 0.1 mile rule (or guideline, if you like).

  7. I'm trying to put together a route in Google Earth to create an "Along a Route" pocket querry. I'm able to create simple ones like from City A to City B. But what I'd like to do is create one that goes from City A to City B to City C to City D where the route taken from City A to City D isn't the one Google Earth wants to create.

I assume this can somehow be done. Is this my first mistake?

  8. After you find a cache, change the Catagory from ALL (or whatever you've put it in) on the "Info" page to Found. Then when you're done for the day, go to the Found Catagory and choose "Delete Records" and that will delete all of the caches that you'd found.

  9. I found an easy park and grab at a gas station a few months back. I took the cache and the log back to the car to sign. Then a guy came out of the store and got into the truck that was right in front and facing the lampost where I needed to replace the cache. So I sat in my car waiting for him to drive off, but he just opend a drink and something to eat and sat there. I waited about five minutes, and then decided that I'd go find another cache close by. So I did, and came back about 20 minutes later. The guy was still there eating and looking right at the lampost. I sat there another five minutes trying to figure out what to do, and then he finally left.

It pays to be quick I guess.

  10. I have a Z22 -- got it off eBay. I load the gpx files into GSAK, export the CacheMate pdb file which will load to the Z22 when you sync it (connected to the computer). Works great. I've noticed some glare problems, but I guess I've gotten used to it -- it's never been the issue if I don't find a cache.

  11. My feeling is that if there is no tag on the tb or geocoin expressly stating its goal, then I feel ok about picking them up and moving them onto the next place I visit whether or not it's helping to fulfill its goal. I always hope that I can help, or at least not hinder too much.

  12. Thanks for all the replys to My post

Found 2 more caches today GPS reading was within 10'

It's nice when the cache is within a nice small radius of your gps reading, but it isn't always that way. You always have to take into account that the coordinates in the cache description may be off somewhat. For instance, if the given coordinates are off 20' to the north of the cache, and then you come looking with your gpsf and it's off 20' to the north of those coordinates, then the cache is 40' to the south of where you are looking. This is may be an exagerated example, but I've seen worse. Yesterday, I went looking for a a cache that was supposed to be next too a tree. Well, my gpsr said ground zero was 115' from the closest tree.

I think that after a while you get used to these kind of factors.

  13. Archived means that it's disabled for good. Disabled means that it's down until the owner can fix it. If it stays disabled long enough the cache will be archived.

Yes, if you find the container, but the log is gone, damaged or wet, you can add a new log for you and others to sign.
