  1. Putting the update on the SD card did it. That is the opposite of how I'd think this would work. Thanks for the suggestion. I'd have likely tried that eventually anyway. Downside: Now I can't party like it's 1999! ?
  2. I'm having trouble getting my PN60 to update to 3.7. I upgraded to 3.6 but placing the pn-60.hex file in the "update" folder on the device and restarting does nothing. Thoughts?
  3. I'm selling my Magellan Explorist 500LE. At least it used to be a "LE" until I put a rechargable LiIon battery in it and I've not opened it since. It has some built in geocaching functions and a color screen. It has a 1GB SD card in it that I'm leaving in. Its well used but still works well. It has some maps loaded and I'm too lazy to wipe it. it will come with the USB cable. The USB cable works but is also well used. The screen is in 98% condition as I used screen protectors. The rubber coating is torn a little on the joystick but it still works fine. $35 shipped.
  4. mine also says 5.2.17 Apr 24, 2007. This seems to be an OS that cannot be upgraded to the 2.57 (I'm in the same boat). I have a Li-ion battery too that I added to my 500 LE. The only difference in the 500 and 500LE was the packaging. The 500 came with the battery and the LE came with the AAA clip. Nothing in the software or on the unit says anything other than 500, as far as I know.
  5. I agree almost completely. I love the way the explorist does the file system and has the info for the geocaches built right in (though I'd really like to have container size on there), the speed and zoomability of the Garmin 60CSX, a good 3 axis compass, turn by turn directions with reasonably priced maps. The delorme maps are cool. It seems GPS units are going backwards, though. Maps cost more and more, units are becoming more propriatary (look at what Magellan is doing with computer connectivity), and the new units just suck at being a GPS.
  6. That one was cool. It was my first EarthCache and probably the most interesting I've done.
  7. I got a response from Trimble. The issue seems to be that it stopped working when I connected my Blackberry to a Blackberry Enterprise Server at work. I didn't put 2 and 2 together about this being the trigger. They helped me with my issue, though I'm not sure I should say how. The support was quite helpful, though. Great customer service!
  8. That would be really strange, since I have an unlimited data plan, it worked for about two days when I first installed it, and I can get to any website I want to go to with the Blackberry's browser. If I get an official response from Trimble I'll post it for all who may need this in the future.
  9. I asked on their support forums, and sent an email to support Thursday, but nothing yet, so I'll ask here... I have an AT&T Blackberry 8310 Curve. my 60 day free trial worked for about two days, and suddenly stopped. I now try to find caches and get an "unexpected error (GN1006)" If I try to change my PIN, I get "Unable to retreive data from the server. Please try again. HTTP response 503" I tried reinstalling the software, and now I cannot even get in. When trying to initialize, I get the HTTP error 503 again. Does anyone know whats going on here? Thanks,
  10. It's called "range and bearing"... off a known point... and just about every GPS will do that... we have found many caches like this... Probably the easiest (no button pushing, no compass) way to end up 177' towards 54 degrees is to walk until your GPS says you are 177' away and need to go 234 degrees to get there... lol. Hey, haven't seen your name lately. I see you on a lot of old caches and benchmarks around here. But anyway, thats off topic.
  11. I also cannot place a new cache. --EDIT-- I just realized that if I UNCHECK "the description below is in HTML" it works.
  12. The USB cable that comes with the Explorists will charge the unit IF and only if the unit is turned off. connecting the cable backwards will still charge it, but will not allow data connection. I don't think this is bad for the unit, but there is no reason to do so intentionally.
  13. That makes sense, since without the extras in the GPX file, the LOC file is much more like a standard waypoint than a geocache point (it would be missing all of the extra info that a geocache point holds).
  14. you can get an Explorist 500 LE for about the same price as the 210 these days. The 500 is far better, with added geocaching functionality, color screen, and SD card for storing extra maps, routes, waypoints, etc. I had a 210 and upgraded to the 500. I'm glad I did.
  15. I really wonder if this thing will be useful for geocaching. It's called a "Nuvi"phone, and from the one picture I've sen of any GPS features, it shows their 3d view of a driving directions. I don't think it is geared towards the outdoors GPS market, and more towards the "where is the nearest sushi restaurant" crowd.
  16. I actually got the firmware from some Australian site. Of course the install didn't do anything to my 2.17 unit. I don't think I'm brave enough to wipe my GPS and try from there.
  17. Is there anywhere to get the 2.57 upgrade now? I cannot seem to get it from the Magellan site. The originally posted link shows nothing, and if I register my product as the EU version, I get a "file not found" error from Magellan to download the software. (somewhere on http://magellan.cachefly.net/ ) I doubt it will matter as it seems I have 2.17 anyway. Is there a way anyone has found to upgrade from 2.17 yet?
  18. I get this problem from time to time with mine. I also used to get it with my 210. I think the problem is your computer. On my PC it works about half the time, and it helps if I dim the screen on the GPS. On my work PC (a dell) and my wife's laptop (also a dell come to think of it) I never have problems. I think it is a power issue, but I don't know if it would be the computer's power supply, or something specific to the USB. On my computer it works best when plugged into one of the rear USB ports directly on the motherboard, rather than one of the front USB ports. I hope my experience helps you.
  19. Edited because I can't read. Nothing to see here, move along.
  20. Wow, there were way more replies here than I ever wanted or expected. Go spend a couple hours with the family and your thread explodes! Short and simple, I found the cache easily (yes, I did read the page before, but no, I wouldn't have remembered THAT was the one that wasn't where the coords said it would be), the guy has issues, and I'm done with it (maybe I'll read and laugh at him in the future, who knows). Thanks for the opinions and the clarity. I did not know when multi or puzzle caches were invented, so that pretty much clears it up. I do feel bad for any new people who read this guy's ramblings as I do not feel it is a good reflection on this community... but, to each his own.
  21. Well that's what I did. It was pretty easy to approximate the direction (plus there weren't many directions I could go that far in a straight line). I was just looking for an opinion, and I think I'll just personally never look at that cache listing again, since I found it (and there is no point reasoning with the owner).
  22. Cache GC406E First of all, this is listed as a traditional cache, but there is a requirement to have a compass and walk 177 feet from the location in a given direction to find the cache. 2nd, the owner is rude to cache finders. He seems to think everyone is out to get him (and his caches), and takes friendly user notes in the worst possible way, attacking them in his own user notes. I know reviewers aren't cache police, and I hate to bother them unless it is warranted, but this one concerns me for multiple reasons. I had no trouble finding this one, but if I didn't have cachemate, I would not have known to walk 177 feet away to find the cache. That doesn't mean its a difficulty 4, just that its a mystery cache. Anyway, just looking for opinions. Thanks in advance.
  23. No Kidding! I visited there earlier this year for a wedding, and there are some challenging caches there! I only found a few, and I think I DNF'd most of "his" finds that I looked at due to my limited time there.
  24. I agree with everyone. Bring it back!
