  1. Like others on here, I have used Geocaching with my Scout Troop for a number of years. We have a few dotted around Northumberland that they have put out, its got to a stage where each camp they like to place a cache. I also got 3 coins for the whole group last year and sent them on a 12 month long race. This ends at the end of September and it looks like the Cubs have won by the odd thousands of miles. I got a map of the world and put pins in so they could see how well their coins were doing, and that kept their interest going. Anyway good luck in whatever you do with them and Happy Birthday as well.
  2. just to let you all know Tescos are doing a 4 items for £1 for stationary stuff all of it canny enough for little pressies. so no need to spend loads.
  3. No we are not saying that every cache should cater for children, what we are saying is dont swop for junk. + lets face it most of the swops are going to be aimed at children anyway. Unless you want to collect used wine botle corks or beer bottle tops and I am sure there are folk out there who do want to collect them, I just dont want to find them in caches thats all. I tend to stock mine with stuf for kids and the swops I carry are for kids as well. Although I do throw the odd wherewolf in for older cachers as well.
  4. I havent been caching a lot lately, due to a number of factors but I thought hey! sun is shing lets go do some maint on a cache or two and grab some others. Get to the caches and all the swops have been replaced by absolute trash, things like a wine bottle cork, stupid plastic soldier, pencil sharpener that has no blade, broken ping pong ball etc. etc. etc. Now i know you dont have to swap and thats cool I dont always have good stuff with me so I dont leave or remove anything, but why on earth do others take stuff and leave rubbish ( I am being very polite here, pleas e note). Anyone who reads this Please Please Please think of the little ones who have walked and hunted to find some buried treasure and on opening the cache find tat. STOP IT PLEASE!!! Its not just my caches that i find this in its nearly every single cache I open these days, is this a consequence of greater publicity or just general stupidness/lazyness??? Grrrrrrr!!!!!!
  5. wOW! Thanks a lot for all your efforts, many many more than I thought so if the first cache goes well I may have enough for a series Anyway keep them coming and I promise any used will get a mention.
  6. OK this is where you can let your creative talents run wild, not so much Britains got talent more "Cachers have even more talent than that lot that try to show off on telly" I am doing a puzzle cache and part of the cache needs me to describe what type of cacher you are. Now I dont want you to describe yourself, I want you to come up with funny names for a type of cacher and a brief explanation. Something like Cacher Twitterer A person who gets all excited when they spot a new cache anywhere in the British Isles and rushes off to get it. Any used on the cache page will be credited to the author/inventor So over to all of you no matter how long or otherwise you have been caching. I won't be using the term Newbie
  7. Thank you Mrs B I knew someone out there would put me on the right track.
  8. Hi I need a MOD (totaly off rockers at the moment) to contact me, I have an idea for a cache that I want to run past them before I go ahead with it, so could one of you very kind and overworked folk PM me? Thanks
  9. I have had a couple go missing and then re-appear weeks later. One in a race got out to California then was reported missing by a number of cachers, then the person who had logs it and explains he/she has been away from a pc for a while. So it happens, dont let the people who steal them put you off drill a hole in yours and attach a passport for it, this seems to put off most who want to steal after al they cant show them off if they have a hole in can they?
  10. Dont knock all layby caches, one on the A69 took me 2 attempts to find because thought had gone into it and i am thick. Those that say its not like the old days are maybe nearing the end of their days in this hobby. Lets face it we all change as we go through life, I once played football now I look like one. Caching is about doing it your way, some place puzzles, some place micros, some place a cache then realise its rubbish and kill it thats what I like about this I can do as much or as little as I want and do it whichever way I want to do it. One day a fine hike to a remote spot then maybe a drive by, all are good as far as I am concerned. Each cache has its own merits and demerits. As for signing a log well as long as you sign it to show you have realy been there thats all that matters. I try to add a little about the day on the online log then folk can see what I thought about the cache and make up thier minds to do it or pass along to another.
  11. I set 3 off for my Scout group one for each section last Sept. the Cub coin is on its way to California. I have a couple of coins waiting to be released, anyone else want to join in on this can get in touch and we can set things up.
  12. Buy yourself a roamer something like where-wolf from Ebay will come in handy when doing grid references, only other thing I would say to learn is how to use a compass and map, don' rely on just your GPS. Good Luck
  13. A wee Ramble on the Moors was placed on 12/08/2007 and is still unfound. Just a straight forward (sort of) cache hidden away on the Northumberland moors. Moss trooper had a bash and logged a did not attempt instead of a DNF because this one is for folks who know what they are doing on the hills and Moss does. So anyone trying this one needs to think about it carefully and go in a group or at least 2 people. Mobile coverage is patchy and help would be via ASR. Walker Dan has his eye on it is just waiting for better weather. see notes for updates on the cache.
  14. If it can be placed elsewhere then I would be willing, if someone can explain what exactly the cache needs to contain. Sorry but its present location is too far off my track to maintain it properly.
  15. I dont have any problems at all, sometimes its says cant find etc. but if i hit the button again it finds the spot straight away (no pun intended).
  16. ThanksMunketh I couldnt find the post anywhere and thought it would be on here hiding then it turns out the gremlins got in ahead of me anyway. Well done
  17. An At your convience series may lead to all sorts of strange places, it does not need to be in a city centre or on a motorway.
  18. I had a London Big Ben coin removed from a cache in the Lakes, its mission was to get out to Montanna but it looks as if some nice soul has decided to keep it for themselves. Most folk who do this pastime are honest even if they are slow (I am one of the slow ones I know) But like every walk in life some want to spoil it. Rant over
  19. Well Done Munkeh for organising the Newcastle one, thats 6 for the U.K. now
  20. Looking at the amount of subjects in the different countries forums I noticed that in the USA forums all added together that they have 18020 subjects and we (UK) have 13688. Now if you take in that in July 2007 the USA had a population of approx 301139947 and the UK a population of 60776238, I guess that makes us (UK) the biggest users of Groundspeaks forums. So thats another Gold for team GB. So this has me wondering which country has the biggest percentage of cachers in it? Anyone like to work that one out?
  21. Tom Toms are ok for drive bys or caches on a road. Other folk have used them for that type of cache including me, where they let you down is putting in co-ordinates that are not on a road. they just point in a blank space and leave it at that. However you coud use the Tom Tom and a print out of the map from the cache page then using the clue you should be ok. For a while at least. I use an old Yellow Brick (not even a HC version) and it does me fine. I do hunger for flashier units but am happy to plod on and enjoy it my way.
  22. Just had a look on the Gadget show website and its under Wild Challenge, they review a few other devices as well so you can get a good comparison (hopefully) Though it looks like you have to watch the video of the show for the review, cant see a written review. Hope that helps
  23. If I remember right the Gadget show (channel 5 i think or 4 maybe) had a review on the Satmap, might be worth going to thier website see if the review is still there.
