  1. Although listed in the update there has not been a very good description of the new data fields in some of the new Garmin units such as the Montana. Found this posted on the Garmin site. http://garmin.blogs.com/softwareupdates/2011/12/configurable-data-fields.html
  2. I was very disappointed in Garmins Birdseye Satellite imagery. The detail was nothing like as good as Google Maps. Birdseye Select 1:25k maps I find very good and as mentioned if you download only what you need its not too bad.
  3. Hannah, Mac OS X has included a zip/unzip utility for many years now. Just double-click on the file and it should unzip automatically. Patty Your right, I forgot that. I installed the free unarchiver because I come across a lot of other compression standards like RAR files which need a decompressor.
  4. Thanks! Merry Christmas! Just gone through the same process with the wife. I bought her a Etrex 30 for Christmas.
  5. You need to unzip the map into a folder. On my Mac I use Unachiver http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver WHen you connect your Garmin to the USB port of your Mac it should turn the Garmin on and put it into USB mode. After a few seconds it will appear in Finder as an external drive. Navigate to the Garmin folder. At this point its a good idea to open another Finder window (File/New Finder Window) and navigate in that window to the unzipped map which should be a folder by now with a file called 111216-British-Isles+Contours-Routable-GMAPSUPP.IMG in it. Drag that to the GPX folder in the Garmin folder in the other finder window. When done eject the GPSr from Finder and your good to go. Hope that makes sense.
  6. I had something similar when my profiles got screwed and I wanted to return to default. After emailing the beta team they sent me the default profiles in a zip file which copies to your garmin/profiles folder. I can send a copy if you wash. PM me an email address if you wish a copy.
  7. I am assuming that 3.70 is slightly better than the last 3.68 beta going by the numbers.
  8. If you have difficulty with the zip files on the Mac. Use Unarchiver from here http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver
  9. I don't have the etrex but the usual Garmin convention is to go to the waypoint page in the waypoint manager. Select the waypoint then under menu there is usually an option to project waypoint from there.
  10. Cheers for that. It only came this morning so I haven't even linked it up to the computer yet for any updates. Do they have a beta team same as the Montana where you can report the odd feature (bug) or suggestion. EDIT... Found it. Just updated to 3.71 and found the beta email address.
  11. Does anyone know if the 62s has beta firmware with a similar program to the Montana. I suspect if it had it will have closed now as it's been available a lot longer than the 62 series. I have a new one here with a version 3.0 firmware. There are few things not on the 62s that I miss but are on the Montana for example a GPS elevation field. If they still have beta program similar to the Montana I wouldn't mind making a few suggestions.
  12. I agree. From experience you will get a better dialogue going with the beta support team than the generic support. They have a better chance of passing it on to the correct team if it is a hardware issue.
  13. One big advantage of Garmin is the availability of free third party maps.
  14. The etrex does do chirp but only the etrex 30 model. That's one that also does data transfer between compatible gpsr's. I think that's ANT+ protocol.
  15. It's the only thing I can tie to this non responsive power button described earlier in the thread here.
  16. Trouble is that when I do it that way the Montana sometimes hangs and won't turn back on without the batteries removed and replaced to reboot it.
  17. I have a bit of an issue ejecting the Montana on the Mac. It appears as two drives, the unit itself and the SD card. After ejecting them I have about 3 to 5 seconds before they pop back again. It won't stay ejected in other words. So unless I am quick off the mark pulling the USB plug out in that small 3 to 5 second window it can be a problem.
  18. I must admit size is an issue.......After using my iPad To be honest, for me, the size is excellent as it makes reading the display easier and also lets you customise with quite a few data fields on one page.
  19. I take it back. After loading a new mapset on my unit and removing it from my computer the power button refuses to work. Pulled battery, reinserted it and it starts normally. I am using a Mac and have this problem occasionally. I found ejecting the device (Garmin and SD card) and it behaves. I found I only got the non-responsive power button if I disconnect from the USB port without ejecting properly.
  20. I have been using icaching from the app store. Quite pleased with it so far.
  21. I would be interested to know how you think the Montana could be made more geocache friendly. I did a lot of research into this before buying mine and it seemed to be the best around.
  22. Yes wil probably do that. Decided best to keep separate accounts in case I do any solo ones. But may generate a family one too as son occasionally gets interested.
  23. Thanks to both of you for the advice. Will keep the accounts separate for now. I think I was just a bit concerned there was some unwritten code of ethics and I didn't want to upset.
